Leather- if you are vegetarian

shinynewapple · 06/11/2019 21:52

If you are vegetarian- do you still buy/wear leather? Eg bags / shoes / jacket?

I am assuming that cattle are not specifically killed for this; but then if you wouldn't kill the animal to eat it, then it's wrong to still wear its skin?

I'm not asking about vegans here, but people who eat dairy but not meat.

Why?

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/11/2019 22:06

No. Lifelong veggie and I’ve never worn or bought leather and wouldn’t.

WoollyFoolly · 06/11/2019 22:08

I'm not veggie but my DH is and has been for 30+ years and he doesn't buy or wear leather, no.

I try very hard to avoid leather.
All my bags, shoes and belts are leather free.

SleepwalkingThroughLife · 06/11/2019 22:13

Shoes/boots yes while living in a wet cold country, but while abroad with better weather, then no.

Bags coats purses etc no, not even with just a leather buckle etc.

haveuheard · 06/11/2019 22:14

I don't buy or anything leather.

I once accidentally upset an 11 year old as she didn't know leather was animal skin and she had a leather jacket.

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/11/2019 22:16

Dh finds it very hard.
Lots of options for women, but everything for men has leather on it, especially wallets and bags.

Pandaintheporridge · 06/11/2019 22:17

I am ambivalent. I have leather shoes/boots. The fact that they are practical seems to matter to me. I would not wear a leather jacket, I have fake ones. We even were happy that the leather couch we looked at wasn't real - only people in the sofa showroom to say that to the salesman I think!

WoollyFoolly · 06/11/2019 22:23

@FlamingoAndJohn, I really like these made from recycled fire hoses www.elvisandkresse.com/collections/men

Elieza · 06/11/2019 22:26

I always felt bad for liking my leather handbag, jacket, boots and sofa when I was a veggie.
I’m not veggie now but thinking about it. Most of my stuff is second hand nowadays so that somehow makes it alright to be leather....Confused

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/11/2019 22:26

They are beautiful @woollyfoolly but also a million pounds.

WoollyFoolly · 06/11/2019 22:30

😂 well yes, there is that slight drawback. I've been hankering after a bag from there for years myself.

shinynewapple · 06/11/2019 22:31

@theboxfamilytree why? I was wondering what other people's stance in this was?

Leather bags /shoes tend to be better made and your feet don't get wet. Yet they are not essential, there's an alternative. I haven't bought leather goods since I stopped eating meat but wondered what other people did.

Haven’t eaten farmed meat in many years but not strictly veggie (do eat some fish). I take the view that getting good wear out of well-made shoes is environmentally sound as well as respectful of the fact an animal died to create them. I buy second hand to avoid waste and to not support ‘disposable fashion’. I also wear wool and silk because natural fibres wear better and last longer.

fromthefloorboardsup · 06/11/2019 22:38

I don't buy leather

poppym12 · 06/11/2019 22:42

I don't buy leather.

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/11/2019 22:46

If I ever have money for fripperies again I’m going to buy a cork handbag. Mushroom leather was in the news a while ago too but at eye watering prices. For now I’m happy with my PU wallet, fabric handbag and pleather shoes and boots.

Even if leather is a by product of the meat industry so nothing dies specifically for it, it’s dead animal skin, and I don’t want to touch it.

Polestar50 · 06/11/2019 22:47

Been veggie for years. I used to avoid all leather (eg rejecting jackets and bags if the little pull tag on the zip was leather)

I do wear leather now for all the practical reasons you mention (harder wearing, weatherproof etc) but justify it to myself by only buying second hand (EBay is great for footwear!)

MeTheCoolOne · 07/11/2019 00:38

My veggie pal avoids all leather and had a hard time buying a fancy car as most had leather seats. They ended up buying a more mid-range car.

Hazardd · 07/11/2019 00:49

To the best of my knowledge leather is a by product of the meat industry....I think?

I'm a bit silly over leather, shoes and bags yes, sofa yes but I wouldn't wear a leather coat nor buy hide throws for the floor like Ikea used to have.

If people stopped eating cows but they still slaughter them for leather it likely be a no from me.

trixiebelden77 · 07/11/2019 04:43

No, I don’t wear any leather. Haven’t for 25 years.

People sometimes like to ask as a ‘GOTCHA YA HYPOCRIT’ and seem surprised and a bit put out when I say I don’t wear leather.

sam221 · 07/11/2019 05:16

Yes I do wear leather for practical long lasting reasons but I have never owned fur-I also actively avoid wearing anything with Angora, utterly vile how it's sourced.

Submariner · 07/11/2019 05:44

I found this interesting: www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2008/aug/27/ethicalfashion.leather

I am still using some leather things I had before going vegan and I would buy vintage or from a charity shop if I needed to replace.

OpheIiaBaIIs · 07/11/2019 07:10

It's a knotty one for me as I have issues with my feet which mean I need to wear specialist shoes, and they're all leather. So no choice there. I also love vintage clothes, especially bags, which are often leather - I realise that's just vanity and pretty hypocritical, but I only ever buy second hand leather bags and they're usually over 20 years old, too. I don't buy anything new that's leather (apart from the shoes, which I can't avoid sadly).

charactersonclothesaretrashy · 07/11/2019 07:12

Yes I like leather shoes for the dc for school.
They are getting a felt backed item for Christmas too.
No guilt.
