Most surprisingly delicious food you’ve ever eaten?

Today I went to an Italian cooking class with Angela Hartnett - it was amazing, everything was delicious but I was a bit sceptical about pumpkin-filled pasta with crushed amaretti biscuits...

It was honestly the best thing I’ve eaten in a long time. I don’t even like pumpkin. Now seriously considering buying a pasta machine so I can make it again 😂

Would love to hear about foods that surprised you by being awesome... I’m too full to eat dinner so I’ll eat vicariously through you!

@SinkGirl they really are! Now I have a major craving for them again 🤤🤤🤤

I tried (very good quality) steak tartare in a very good restaurant in Paris. I literally couldn’t eat it, which surprised me, and it was very awkward 😬

I tend to choose foods I know I’ll like but today has inspired me to be more adventurous (especially when something new is mixed with huge quantities of cheese - you can’t go wrong really).

This was the pasta which I shall now have lovely dreams about!

One thing that comes to mind is gnocci fried in butter with fresh sage leaves and parmesan and lots of pepper. Mmmm.

Lovely recipe for the pumpkin and amaretto biscuit ravioli on bbc food.

Excited101 · 06/11/2019 23:08

Bbq’ed horse, like a direct cross between a perfectly done pork and beef steak 🤤

Puppybum · 06/11/2019 23:08

My mum makes the most amazing cheesy mash, baked with a crispy crust.

longtompot · 06/11/2019 23:10

@Jingers5 its basically this recipe, but I grate parmesan over it on the plate.

Chilli crab in Singapore. Was there for work and a group of us went out with a local for this. I don't like food that looks just like itself alive and that I need to dismember (lobster and crab for example). I was licking the shell of the crab by the end and it is one of the reasons I want to go back to Singapore.

@SinkGirl that class sounds great - we make pasta at home with DS and its love someone to show me how to do it properly, plus I love Angela Hartnett's food.

Please can you share the details of the class? I'm thinking it would be a great Christmas present....

Salt and pepper eels at a chinese restaurant, not something I would have ordered but was out with dm and her husband and we always ordered something different. They became one of our regular dishes

Volvemos · 06/11/2019 23:25

A dessert on honeymoon, served al fresco on a piazza. Blue cheese, white chocolate ganache, black olives. Truly amazing.

Volvemos · 06/11/2019 23:25

I missed out the local honey!

Chugchugtraintrain · 06/11/2019 23:38

Pickled squid tentacles, served as a tapas in Portugal. They were really lovely.

managedmis · 06/11/2019 23:54

Sushi

managedmis · 06/11/2019 23:55

Yeah I can't eat steak tartare TBF

French DH didn't have a problem

7Days · 07/11/2019 00:06

Clonakilty black pudding might be more widely available and is gorgeous

Overseasmom100 · 07/11/2019 00:07

Paneer...love it

BanKittenHeels · 07/11/2019 00:08

Have to agree with the posters who said haggis. I just don’t understand how it has the poor reputation it has when it is so delicious.

Adding it to my online shop immediately.

Curried prawn soup With crunchy onions in a restaurant in Spain ( it had other stuff, it was a poncy restaurant) wasn’t sure when I ordered it, still was t sure when it arrived at the table but it was amazing (had I been at home Id have licked the bowl clean)
Bone marrow mashed potato - I could eat my own body weight

Graphista · 07/11/2019 01:09

Ashamed as a veggie of over 30 years to say 2 of mine very much meat:

Haggis - loves it when a meat eater and actually find the veggie ones very good too

Steak - but I was on holiday in France before turning veggie, it was in someone's home and so no option to say how I wanted it cooked, it barely saw the very hot pan but was delicious

Since turning veggie:

Pickled garlic - discovered this when living elsewhere in Europe and love it to a point I have to be careful not to polish off a whole jar in one sitting! (It's also a very effective laxative unfortunately)

Proper polish beetroot soup - again discovered while living elsewhere, just amazing

A deli I used to live near did the most amazing vegetarian terrrine that was like a smooth pate, 3 tiers one was spinach and cream cheese, one was carrot, butternut squash and sage and one was beetroot, carrot and cream cheese it was absolutely lush! I used to get a big portion on a Friday and a couple of their gorgeous crusty rolls and that would be my "dinner" of a Friday evening followed by a slice of their death by chocolate cake.

Pasta fagioli (pasta and bean soup)from my local Italian restaurant It is honestly the best thing I've ever eaten. I've tried numerous recipes in an attempt to recreate it at home but nothing even comes close.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 07/11/2019 02:00

Stir fried lettuce. OMG could eat it right now!

Seriously considering begging a butcher for chicken skin and making my own 😂
Just buy chicken with skin on?

SinkGirl · 07/11/2019 07:46

@HeroicAlien the class was at Lime Wood Hotel in the new forest, where she’s one of the head chefs.

They do classes all the time, but she only does one once a month or so, sometimes less - the other guy who runs the rest of the classes was there yesterday and he was fantastic so I’d go to any of them. In fact there’s a specific pasta making class coming up that he’s running. You can see the upcoming classes on the website. I think they only have classes listed until the end of December at the moment but sure they will add more.

The hotel itself is stunning and has an amazing spa. They often have deals on out of season. It’s the second time I’ve been and I’ve decided I would quite like to move in if I win the lottery!
