Anyone speak Chinese? WEIRD FINDING IN HEDGE!

Evening all!

My friend's dog just went rummaging around in a hedge in the middle of nowhere and pulled out a stack of twenties!! They look pretty authentic but obviously aren't because they've got Chinese stamps on them.

Does anybody know what they say? We're so curious as to why they were there, but also, why make fake money and then put an obvious mark on them to show that they are fake? Confused

What say you Vipers? Sorry about the dark photograph btw...my mate took it and she's technologically challenged Grin

Is it fake money used in funeral rites?

WeeDangerousSpike · 06/11/2019 19:30

No idea what it says. But I have a vague recollection of gifts of money in red envelopes being good luck and something about it not having to be real money. Or something. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along in a bit!

MrsBobBlackadder · 06/11/2019 19:31

I found this online.... these had Chinese writing on them too:

happinessischocolate · 06/11/2019 19:31

Why do you assume they are fake just because someone has stamped them? They'd still be legally tender,

noideaatallreally · 06/11/2019 19:31

MrsBobBlackadder · 06/11/2019 19:32

See my post... are you in Grimsby?!

WeeDangerousSpike · 06/11/2019 19:33

Ah! See this article, I think it's the same writing? www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/world-australia-39853355

MrsBobBlackadder · 06/11/2019 19:34

I mean Scunthorpe (sorry!!)

Slightaggrandising · 06/11/2019 19:34

Didn't this thread happen before?

BIWI · 06/11/2019 19:38

Training notes, apparently.

LiterallyCantBelieveIt · 06/11/2019 19:41

Thanks MrsBob! We are in West Wales. This seems to be a widespread thing...found loads of links online about different parts of the world that have had this: www.mtairynews.com/news/69264/police-warn-of-money-with-chinese-writing

Thanks WeeDangerous, will take a look now.

SlightAggrandising if it did. I didn't see it. Hmm

Slight I have a distinct feeling of deja vu too.

CatToddlerUprising · 06/11/2019 19:43

The top red block characters is something like achievement practice tickets

LiterallyCantBelieveIt · 06/11/2019 19:44

Biwi and WeeDangerous have it. 'Training money' apparently. What's the point in that?

Thanks all for all of your suggestions. So strange!

slight and wow are you accusing me of being a troll? Every time I post on here these days I get the same bloody thing. It's getting a bit dull!

OP posts:
wigglybluelines · 06/11/2019 19:48

What's the point in that?

I'd imagine it's to train Chinese cashiers (possibly in exchange places?) what foreign money looks like.

Seems like a practical idea.

I find it amusing how many southern English shops have accepted Scottish notes, when they had no clue what they even were till I explained! They could do with some Scottish versions of these.

LiterallyCantBelieveIt · 06/11/2019 19:51

I can imagine that Wiggly , seems sensible. Obviously getting into the hands of criminals for nefarious purposes

TheSpottedZebra · 06/11/2019 19:54

Like pp said, it's hell money, isn't it? You burn it for the dead.

TheSpottedZebra · 06/11/2019 19:55

My nephew's school also use it for play money.

BlitheringIdiot · 06/11/2019 19:56

Ghost festival, probably. Fake money gets burned to send it to loved ones on the other side. Also used for recent deaths?

BlitheringIdiot · 06/11/2019 19:58

It was about a month ago this time. Could it have been there that long? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Festival

LiterallyCantBelieveIt · 06/11/2019 23:05

Sorry noidea, somehow missed your suggestion earlier. Just about to have a read Smile

Shall look into that ghost festival too...🙀

Go to Google Translate and use the handwriting option.

TheSandman · 06/11/2019 23:14

From a quick scribble there The red lettering may say:

立長票样 = Long Ticket

Kinsters · 07/11/2019 02:10

Never heard the paper money burned for ancestors and deities called hell money - it's just paper money or joss paper.

I don't think that's what this is though - what is normally burned looks nothing like regular bank notes in my experience - see below google image link is what is usually used.
