Gain weight tips

GeePipe · 06/11/2019 16:18

Has anyone got any tips to gain about a stone? My bmi is about 19.7 and have been told yet again im underweight. Ive always been underweight but now its paramount i gain it quickly.

TRIGGER WARNING-MC

I had a miscarriage on sunday. 11 weeks and it was bad. I was blue lighted to hospital hemmoridging badly and lost about 4 pints of blood. Im home now and still bleeding and clotting but scans showed no tissue was left so that was the only positive. My midwife before this said underweight makes me higher risk of miscarriage so i am determined to gain weight and try again as soon as i am healed.

Thanks if anyone read this far. Im looking to gain weight but be healthy vitamin wise too.

So sorry for your loss Flowers have you tried having a glass of full fat milk with every meal

GeePipe · 06/11/2019 16:30

I’m so sorry for your late loss.
I’d agree with the milk and also plenty of carbs too. If you find it hard to gain weight you could try supplement drinks like ensure or Complan from the pharmacy.

I’d have thought supplement drinks were the way to go too.

Sorry about your miscarriage. 💐.

Why don't you tell us an average days' meals and we can give some ideas?

GeePipe · 06/11/2019 16:42

Thank you all. ⚘ on average days i eat when im hungry so i tend to snack all day rather than have proper meals. I have an evening meal but its never usually big as i cant face them. Ive been eating a lot of yogurt the last few months.

Eating has become very difficult the last few days as well which doesnt help especially as im still bleeding and clotting and feel sick. Im just so traumatised and want to recover asap.

Sorry about your miscarriage, it's horrible. When I had mine I went off eating for a bit.

As for gaining weight, eating 'full fat' dairy products like cheese, milk and yogurts can help. Also eating 'good' fats like from nuts or avocados. I also found having more small meals meant I could eat more food as I can't eat big meals.

I've managed to gain a good half a stone this year by doing this. My BMI was 19.3 still classed as a healthy weight but I was quite ill with a horrible virus at the beginning of last year and I lost 5lb in a week. I think part of my problem was I had nothing to fight it with. My BMI is now around 21 and I feel much better.

I wish you the best of luck with your next pregnancy.

GeePipe · 06/11/2019 17:49

Small meals and more good fats sounds like the best way to go for this as i want to gain and maintain :)

Any good food suggestions so far ive got

Full fat dairy
Nuts
Avacados

I’ve gained 1.5 stone this year as I was underweight at the start of the year. What worked for me was making sure that I have set times to eat and eating at those times with no excuses. I aimed for three meals and two snacks per day, extra snacks if I was hungrier. I gradually increased the amounts that I was eating too. I also focused on strength training to build muscle which had the added bonus of making me hungrier as well.

Other food suggestions from me:
Peanut butter on everything
Oils or butter for cooking and oils for drizzling on things
Protein shakes
Smoothies are good for packing extra calories into for days/times when your appetite is smaller
Houmous
Make sure that you don’t shy away from carbs either.

I’m very sorry for your loss.

Hi OP, so sorry to hear of your loss. I had the same issue a few years ago. Little and often is good. Nuts definitely, egg mayonnaise with full fat mayo on oat biscuits, salmon pate on the same, milkshakes made with full fat milk, banana, protein powder, hot chocolate again with full fat milk. Baked Camembert with nice crackers or French bread.

GeePipe · 06/11/2019 20:14

They are some good ideas thank you. I will also look into milk shakes or meal replacemwnt shakes although not complan. I had complan once and ive never gotten over it lol

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 06/11/2019 20:19

McDonald’s thick shakes and Complan.

GeePipe · 06/11/2019 20:25

Today i have managed a pizza and a pear and some orange juice which seems a lot for me this week.

I cant get stuff until saturday when my parents come to visit and can buy me stuff but so far ive decided on 2 smoothies a day with peanut butter and oats. And im at a bit of a loss after that.

Add Ben and Jerry’s to smoothies and ground nuts can be stirred into most sweet and savoury foods

Lobsterquadrille2 · 07/11/2019 13:21

Could you have a supermarket delivery? Or write a list for your parents? Nuts, cheeses, oat biscuits, full fat milk, avocados, peanut butter, bananas for a start? And any fruit and vegetables you like as well, obviously.

GeePipe · 07/11/2019 13:35

Oh they are good too. Yes i will be writing a list for my parents to bring me stuff. Im trying to stay away from stuff like icecream as i want to be healthy. Once i stop bleeding and gain weight i want to try for another baby so want to give us the best chance.

Have greek yoghurt if you can as it's got a higher protein level. I'm not sure about the BMI / miscarriage thing though. I've always been medically underweight and had 2 consultant led / "high risk" pregnancies because of my BMI, plus later onset blood pressure. No-one mentioned a raised miscarriage risk to me, even as an old gimmer over-40 pregnant mother when my miscarriage rate was significantly higher because of my age.

If you prefer snacks to big meals, it can be hard to boost calories, I've had the same thing. Maybe add banana to tohse peanut smoothies and have a desster of some sort after every "proper" meal.

GeePipe · 07/11/2019 13:46

Thank you SayOohlala i actually eat a lot of greek yogurt so will eat more. My midwife told me literally a week before this happened my lower bmi made me higher risk of miscarriage. She prescribed me asprin although i never had a chance to take it.

@GeePipe so sorry for your loss Thanks

I needed to gain weight myself a couple of years ago and got some of those high calorie shakes that are given for weight gain.

Each one was 140 calories if I remember correctly, and in a small carton, just tasted like milkshake Smile I agree changes in your diet are better but just a couple of those a day could give you a little calorie boost, and they're ideal if you struggle to eat more.

SayOohLaLa · 07/11/2019 14:15

@GeePipe aspirin is usually linked to blood pressure rather than miscarriage, unless there's a family history of something. I was prescribed it as well.

GeePipe · 07/11/2019 14:29

Thank you i will definitely look them up and see if i can buy the calorie drinks online.

As for the asprin i dont know about blood pressure she said mine was normal but my weight made me "high risk of miscarriage" and i need asprin. Im not sure why. I feel like no one has explained anything to me. Even the hospitals been useless and ive had to google everything myself as i have zero answers.

When I was trying to gain weight the biggest things IMO that helped me were. Full fat milk and peanut butter like A PP suggested. I also ate lots of cheese and crackers.

Sorry for your loss OP Flowers

InsertFunnyUsername · 07/11/2019 14:35

Oh and a banana milkshake for lunch. My problem was I was rarely hungry until dinner time so had to find something I enjoyed and could drink at a slow pace.
