Our last book was Three Women by Lisa Taddeo (which I loved and can’t wait to discuss tomorrow night at book club). We each bring a suggestion for the next read, but this month I feel a bit stuck! Any recommendations? Thanks!

Carries's War. Officially a kid's book but I'm reading it to DC and I'm a bit in love with it!

Beartown by Fredrik backman
Three things about Elsie by Joanna Cannon
A man called Ove

Or go classic! Jane Eyre; Far from the madding crowd. Catch 22.

I've just finished reading Exposure by Helen Dunmore. A brilliant Cold War spy story set in 1960, I couldn't put it down and didn't know how it would end until the last page.

Recent reads in our bookclub have been:
Lullaby by Leila Slimani (MN recommendation)
Educated by Tara Westover (a real-life memoir - everyone loved it!)
The Lost Man by Jane Harper (an Australian mystery set in the outback)

WelshCake2019 · 05/11/2019 20:33

A discovery of witches by Deborah Harkness....seasonally appropriate, series 1 was on sky witness or whatever last year and series 2 due soonish I think :)

The tattooist of Auschwitz

This is going to hurt - non fiction

There’s something about Eve was also very good

My Name is Why by Lemn Sissay (autobiography); The Beekeeper of Aleppo (can’t remember author’s name but it’s vg); A Whole Life by Robert Seethaler; The Second Sleep by Robert Harris (post apocalyptic novel); Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons (funny, classic)

The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult.
Amazing

I second Beartown and Where the Crawdads sing. Beartown is such a great read, as is the sequel Us Against You. I'm reading Crawdads at the moment and loving it. It's beautifully written.

The seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is a good read too, and probably great for discussing. And for an all round brilliant read I always recommend Ready Player One, it's just great.

Topbird29 · 05/11/2019 20:56

We've read my sister the serial killer and the bees. Enjoyed both.

Topbird29 · 05/11/2019 20:57

@misskatamari - lover ready player one! The film didn't quite do it justice.c

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman is a book everyone in our book club absolutely loved. It made me laugh and cry, which I can't say about many other books I've read in the past few years.

peardrops1 · 05/11/2019 21:12

We just read The Followers by Rebecca Wait at our book club and it was brilliant - really gripping and gave us loads to discuss.

We've also done Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders which was a trickier read but really interesting and moving.

Also My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout - quite short but so well written!!!
