Cards Against Humanity - what is it and is it suitable for a teenager?

Keep hearing about this must have game but not sure what it is. Heard my 14 year old chatting to his friends about it and was wondering whether to buy for him for Xmas. Anyone tell me more?

It's great. For a drunk adult. For a 14 year old I'd have to say no.

Postmissposte · 05/11/2019 16:04

It's obscene, profane, twisted and dark. Absolutely brilliant fun, but there's no way I would buy it for a teenager! 😊

Musicalstatues · 05/11/2019 16:04

No way! 18+ for sure. It’s definitely a drunk adult game.

OK so explain a bit more I dont get it - I read you take 10 white cards. The person with the black card reads out a question - you answer with one of the white cards???

I went through the cards first and removed the unsuitable ones. My 14 year old loves it!

Can be great fun if you're careful!

Imtootired · 05/11/2019 16:06

You could look up some examples of it online. You get cards and they say random things and you put them together in sentences. Some of the things are very racist and I would say boarderline hate speech about people with disabilities etc. I played once and suggested we don’t say the racist ones and kind of got told that was missing the point of the game. It’s basically an excuse for people to say things they shouldn’t. A lot of teenagers would probably love it but I definitely would encourage my son not to

Youngatheart00 · 05/11/2019 16:07

18 plus definitely

Overseasmom100 · 05/11/2019 16:08

Ah ok Im getting the jist of it now then....I think...

OP posts:
INeedNewShoes · 05/11/2019 16:10

Definitely not. I think you need to have a firmly developed sense of decency/ethics/appropriateness before you play this game. This game crosses the line massively; some of it is SO wrong, which is fine if you know that it's wrong and can separate it from real life.

I'd say its unsuitable for a lot of young adults on this basis as well as it risks normalising hateful behaviour towards others.

I’ve just looked it up and I can’t see why some of it is funny Confused

Well, the obvious prejudiced stuff anyway.

Imtootired · 05/11/2019 16:18

@INeednewshoes I understand what you’re saying but personally I think if you know it’s actually wrong then why do you want to say it to be funny? Not you personally just in general. I really can’t stand the game I think it’s really immature

Overseasmom100 · 05/11/2019 16:20

OK I think I need to look up some of the questions as Im not quite getting it

OP posts:
INeedNewShoes · 05/11/2019 16:21

I actually think I agree with you Imtootired . I played it only once and that must be about 5 years ago now and I felt uncomfortable about it then but I've always been considered to be quite straight-laced/boring so just put it down to that!

Its not a game I would choose to play.

cece · 05/11/2019 16:23

I played it with some 15 year olds once. I didn't know what it was at the time. I learnt a lot of new words. Plus I won easily!!

BringOnTheScience · 05/11/2019 16:25

It's hilarious in the right company, simply because it is so outrageous. It's utterly unPC and downright offensive at times. In the right company, where you all fully understand how bad it is, that's what makes it funny.

Know your audience.

Definitely NOT for under 17/18ish.

RaspberryBubblegum · 05/11/2019 16:26

Here is a youtube video of the online version of cards against humanity if you needed an idea of how it's played

Imtootired · 05/11/2019 16:26

Yes same here @Ineednewshoes I played it once quite a while ago and found the whole thing wrong. If I got asked to play again I’ll say straight out no I don’t find racism and ableism and genocide funny and if people think I’m too “pc” or whatever I don’t care

Overseasmom100 · 05/11/2019 16:26

eeeekkkk...ok just looked at a few samples!!! £25 for a load of cards I'd have to go through will give it a miss

Sooo having just had a look at the Youtube link posted by the PP.

Within minutes we get a question: The reward outweighs the risk blank_

Possible Answers: 1. Rape 2. Becoming a cop to shoot black peoplefor sport 3. Being pregnant while MexicanHmm

Sorry where is the fun again?

INeedNewShoes · 05/11/2019 16:50

OP, Exploding Kittens might be a good alternative...

sleepismysuperpower1 · 05/11/2019 16:51

from what i understand, the first world problems game is meant to be more age appropriate but is along the same lines as cards against humanity? the cards it shows on the website aren't particularly explicit (that i can see anyway)

Overseasmom100 · 05/11/2019 16:55

It's not a game I think I'd want my DS to "enjoy" ... why is it so popular Confused

OP posts:
LoverNotOfChicken · 05/11/2019 16:58

Fisting, anal beads, Madeline McCann, racist jokes so many topics it covers. Definitely not for teenagers.

LoverNotOfChicken · 05/11/2019 16:58

When drunk it can be hilarious. I couldn't play with family though or sober. Would be very uncomfortable.
