You were the voice of my childhood and you gave voices to the underdog always - particularly women.
You were an absolute legend. You discussed issues that went against the authorities, against the church, against the norm.
You were particularly strong on victims of domestic abuse.
Your legacy lives on, while you may long be forgotten. Thank you for helping women. Thank you for shining light on things that needed to be discussed.
I'm really sad to hear of your passing.

Poor uncle Gaybo...may he RIP

ceilihouse · 04/11/2019 17:00

Ah the same, he took on the government, the church and the state, he was an iconic part of our lives, his greatest role was the late late toy show, another part of our childhoods gone,

Oh no. That's really sad. I don't believe it

eosmum · 04/11/2019 17:04

RIP uncle gaybo. There won’t be another like him😢

Rockbird · 04/11/2019 17:09

Ah no. How sad, the voice of my childhood too. RIP Gaybo Sad

eggandonion · 04/11/2019 17:13

Gone to join Terry Wogan, broadcasting to the angels! RIP Gaybo.

Paddywhackd · 04/11/2019 17:30

He was ahead of his time. Brought Ireland out of the dark ages in some respects too.

NonUrinatInVentum · 04/11/2019 17:32

I was so sad to read it. He was amazing with the kids on the toy show. Tubbs is great but doesn't hold a candle Sad

Paddywhackd · 04/11/2019 17:35

He was brilliant on the Toy Show. Would pretend he didn't know how to work something so the little ones would show him.

I wasn't sure whether to put this on the feminism board but I doubt many UK feminists ever heard of him.

To give context - he had a phone in show from maybe 10am in the morning. He had women in violent relationships call in and he'd put them on air. He really gave women voices. He was vocal about contraception, legalising homosexuality, divorce.

He had death threats. But he continued.

The 10am or whatever time it was, had every Irish housewife listening. I'll never forget one woman phoning in as her husband was at work but she was being abused (I must have been home sick from school). He covered stuff that was never discussed in Irish society.

Neither Pat Kenny or Ryan Tubridy could ever be as good as him. The late late and Glenroe will always bring me back to my childhood. RIP Gay Byrne.

Paddywhackd · 04/11/2019 17:49

No - they lack his charisma.

Once Glenroe was over it was bedtime. My mother nearly had a heart attack when Miley started an affair lol. I think I was sent to bed very early that night lol

Yes. All this, but crucially, for anyone unfamiliar, he did it in the 80s on the national broadcaster. In Ireland at the time this was a seriously unheard of thing to do.

BananaBooBoo · 04/11/2019 18:06

Do you remember the competition where he rang the winner and it turned out she had died a few days before and her mother answered. Only Gay could have handled that the way he did. It was heartbreaking. Will never forget it. RIP Gay

Sad news. This is like a trip down memory lane, and I’m old enough to remember Roll it there Collette (before Róisín!!!!).

RIP. Knew him to be an interesting engaged and fearless broadcaster. I always wished we had home here in England. He seemed to buck the stereotype we had of Ireland in the 80s as being socially ‘behind’. He seemed to prove that wrong. Respect and rip.
