How much would you pay for this meal?

I run a holiday cottage business and I offer a bit meal awaiting their arrival for them to serve themselves. I don't do it to make a profit, more as a USP to get bookings as I think people might appreciate it after a long drive. However, I spend a bit of time cooking and shopping (and stressing!) so want some profit for that.

It is beef in red wine stew or lamb shanks in red wine or pie (steak, chicken or vegan mushroom) with mash and minted pea puree. Followed by chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce and clotted cream. It is all homemade, local organic/ free range meat etc.

How much would you pay?

I'm registered with the council to cook food and have all the certificates.

Thanks!

Don't you ever eat out adaline?

Yes, but I find eating other people's home cooked food a different kettle of fish, so to speak!

To provide a meal like regularly though, you would need a kitchen inspection from your local council. Standards are as high and perhaps sometimes higher than commercial establishments. (I have five stars, am proud of that!)

Exp1etiveDeLighted · 05/11/2019 14:11

The OP says she is already registered with the council.

Yes, I realised that, I guess I have been surprised at the suggestion that the quality and safety of the OP's food might not be acceptable. Or that it's necessarily not as good as a pub etc.

We've stayed in places in the past that have done this. Loved it. Long drive to where you are going then you can relax in front of the fire with a bottle of wine and not worry about going out etc. Brilliant idea.

Ttcbabybennett · 05/11/2019 17:44

This sounds amazing! I’d love to know where your cottage is based I haven’t heard of anywhere offering that before and think I need to book!! Xxx

sisibelle · 05/11/2019 17:50

Firstly I would like to say that you are an absolute legend for offering this. I can't think of anything more amazing than a homecooked meal after a long week and a long drive. It's exactly the kind of extra effort that gets you 5 stars.

I think that £15-20 is very reasonable. If you add a bottle of wine I would happily pay £50-60 per couple. I would do this the night we arrive, assuming a Friday then Saturday head to the local pubs/restaurants.

riceuten · 05/11/2019 18:05

Frankly? I would offer the meal fior nothing and load the cost into the rental cost

manicmij · 05/11/2019 18:11

Your meals sound lovely. You don have to be competitive with outlets near you so you are best placed to price. I have though always regarded Airbnb as being chosen due to being cheaper than hotels (sure plenty will tell be otherwise) so would a couple want to spend £30 on a meal just for convenience.

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 05/11/2019 18:16

I would love this £15pp would be great! I would totally love to get in my pjs and have lovely dinner waiting. I would be keen to know the quality of the ingredients though so mention this esp if any of it is locally sourced.

FelicisNox · 05/11/2019 18:22

Sounds lush!

I would pay £15 per adult and £10 for children, especially if it comes with a bottle of wine. Grin

nicky7654 · 05/11/2019 18:22

£20 each. Sounds divine!!

SarahAndQuack · 05/11/2019 18:29

I like the idea, but TBH I think in reality it would make me anxious - I'd feel I had to arrive at a set time or I'd end up with a reheated meal going congealed, and (as others say), I would be uncertain whether you were a good cook or really not. That's no insult to you, just I would feel quite awkward staying at someone's holiday cottage, if their food wasn't to my taste and I ended up binning it, because obviously they'd realise. It's a bit different if you go to a pub and it's no good.

Plus the last thing I want on holiday is to feel as if the people who own the cottage are looking over my shoulder all the time, so the less intrusion the better. I'd much rather a hamper.

I think that makes me an antisocial sod, though! And given you offer it as an option, I'd say charging around 15 a head sounds fair to me.

DeRigueurMortis · 05/11/2019 18:29

I'd pay £20 per head for that.

Sounds lovely though I do agree you could do with another vegetarian option.

Given you've already quoted a nigella recopie I'd recommend her Involtini - it's delicious.

Couldn't find the recipe online so here's a picture from the Feast book.

Tee22 · 05/11/2019 18:48

LOVE this idea! I would gladly welcome it and would be happy paying for it.

Doubletrouble99 · 05/11/2019 18:49

I think that if people are liable to arrive after 9pm for instance when Pubs usually stop serving then it's a good idea to suggest as an option.

Scbchl · 05/11/2019 18:50

16 for those two courses would be the rate where I am. I guess it depends what area you stay and the going rate.

MrsKoala · 05/11/2019 19:15

Cook meals are about £8.50 for 2 for a main and £2.50 per side. So i'd pay the equivalent. No more than £15 for 2 people for the main and maybe £5 for a pudding for 2. £20 all in.

BlingLoving · 05/11/2019 19:20

I'm quite surprised at how many people would pay this. I wouldn't. In effect, it's a home cooked meal or a ready meal. Delicious and all that, but not what I'd be expecting to pay £15 per head for. I'd rather bring a ready meal myself on that basis - and splash out on a Cook one or similar. So it's a no from me.

But apparently i'm in the minority so I'm not sure you should take my advice. (except I will say that at various times we've polled parents at our school if they'd pay for x or y food/drink at a PTA event and they've all categorically said they'd definitely do it.... and then on the day they haven't. So, without wanting to insult any of the previous posters on this thread, I'd not be 100% certain it's an accurate reflection. On the plus side, by offering it you aren't committing or spending any money so you only have to make it for those who do genuinely want it).

Bluerussian · 05/11/2019 19:24

Sounds amazing! Yum.

At least fifteen pounds a head. If it is quite a big party, ie more than three, you could discount it.

It's a lovely thing to do.

Nearly47 · 05/11/2019 19:26

I'd definitely live this kind of service ( is the food is good of course) U live your options too. I think £12/15

WorkerBee83 · 05/11/2019 19:27

Can you message me your cottage details I’d love to take myself and wife it sounds like you an amazing service xx

Nearly47 · 05/11/2019 19:27

So many typos . Meant to say I'd love the service. And love your menu options too.

ReginaGeorgeous · 05/11/2019 19:29

I would decline this. The menu wouldn't be any good for my coeliac husband.

Nearly47 · 05/11/2019 19:31

Maybe you could offer some children friendly meals like pasta. I hate cooking when we are all exhausted from traveling
