How much would you pay for this meal?

I run a holiday cottage business and I offer a bit meal awaiting their arrival for them to serve themselves. I don't do it to make a profit, more as a USP to get bookings as I think people might appreciate it after a long drive. However, I spend a bit of time cooking and shopping (and stressing!) so want some profit for that.

It is beef in red wine stew or lamb shanks in red wine or pie (steak, chicken or vegan mushroom) with mash and minted pea puree. Followed by chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce and clotted cream. It is all homemade, local organic/ free range meat etc.

How much would you pay?

I'm registered with the council to cook food and have all the certificates.

Thanks!

I think it sounds great OP and would go down very well here.

SpiderCharlotte · 04/11/2019 19:32

I charge £20 for 2 people at the moment which I have been thinking is too little.

Far too little.

There's something from your list that each one of us would choose in a pub. Five options for a main course is fine.

MuseumOfYou · 04/11/2019 19:34

plus, no offence but it's made by an actual chef, and the food hygiene ratings are available

I offer this at a holiday cottage I manage too. We provided a meal recently - a huge lasagne and salad, followed by red berry pavlova. We charged £10 a head for 4, but they were so pleased they gave us an extra tenner. (which I think we should probably have charged in the first place!)

Our 5 star hygiene ratings are available to check and to be honest, if the OP does it like we do, and it sounds like she does, everything is cooked from scratch with good quality local ingredients.

My teenage DS worked at the local pub in the summer, supposedly with 'chefs' but only a 4 star hygiene rating and told me about them cutting a Tesco apple pie into 4, serving it with pre prepared custard and charging £6 a portion.

And I did a craft fair last week and made 12 jars of the Nigella Salted Caramel sauce - it flew off the shelves!

We used to do a similar one in our B&B as an optional extra. Back then we charged £10 but I'd say £15 to £20 is more realistic these days.

Arnoldthecat · 04/11/2019 19:37

Without scrolling down so as not to be influenced i estimated £15 per head which seems to chime with most responses..

beckyvardy · 04/11/2019 19:44

Would you offer anything else?

Nothing hard, just thinking maybe easier for you to make.

Ploughman's.
Sandwiche selection?

£15 a head sounds reasonable and I'd pay that too.

MerryDeath · 04/11/2019 19:44

at least 15pp for two courses.

how do they choose if they want it or not? what about vegetarians etc?

parrotonthesofa · 04/11/2019 19:47

Sounds amazing! 10 pounds a head would be great but I would pay 15 .

parrotonthesofa · 04/11/2019 19:48

In fact I may even pay 18

Wizzbangpop · 04/11/2019 19:59

I'd be happy with that meal. And actually the whole package from unpacking an online delivery to the breakfast the next day all sounds amazing

Wizzbangpop · 04/11/2019 20:02

Should add, I'd be happy to pay £15 for that. And quite frankly after a long journey of it meant I didn't have to go out ah win I'd quite happily pay more. I guess all I'd have to do is pop it in the oven for a bit . I'm not sure after a long journey I could handle much more complicated than that

BeardedMum · 04/11/2019 20:09

I love it when the owners have put a bottle of wine on or a cream tea on the side, but the meal sounds just too rich for us so I would not use this service.

SnugglySnerd · 04/11/2019 20:16

As a vegetarian of many years I would like to point out that not all veggies like mushrooms (I don't). Despite this all pubs, restaurants, wedding venues etc insist on having mushrooms as their token veggie offering.
I am also sick of the current trend for everything being sodding vegan. I like pastry made with proper butter. I like cheese. I do not want a vegan substitute.
Based on this I would decline your menu. I also think that if it were a summer holiday most people would want something lighter than what you have suggested. I just asked dh and he would not want to eat that type of food in hot weather.
I'm sorry as I think it's a great idea and I would definitely be interested if the choices were different and would probably pay about 15 pounds per head.

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/11/2019 20:27

I'd be happy to pay £15 if you swapped the pea puree for some green vegetables that aren't pureed (or peas).

I think it's a lovely idea.

CurlyMango · 04/11/2019 20:28

Salted caramel is not considered a bonus here. It destroys the flavour of other items.

I wouldn’t go for your meal, would bring my own if needed for the first night and know what it’s like.

Movinghouseatlast · 04/11/2019 20:28

They choose it by seeing it in our listing then asking us for it. I do the mushroom pie for vegetarians, but I probably need something else too

I agree about salted caramel, I hate it.

milveycrohn · 04/11/2019 20:39

I would decline. Most holiday cottages in the UK now leave a welcome package of tea, coffee, milk and maybe some biscuits.
I have occasionally received a bottle of wine, or once scones, jam and cream.
However, apart from the tea, coffee and milk, the rest is not needed.
If local shops are too far away, I would shop en route for my own items, or most likely eat at the nearest pub.
In my view 15.00 is too much to pay.

jillandhersprite · 04/11/2019 20:39

Now you've clarified its for couples then agree £25-£30 for 2 adults sounds fair.
But please yes expand the veggie options!!! Am so bored of pubs where its a cheesy mushroom starter and a veggie lasagne!
There was a comment upthread though that by offering it as a standard service - there will be more whinging because food likes are so personal and more people are likely to have very different views about what they like/don't like/how its been cooked/presented and so on... so just be prepared for that!!!

Mama1980 · 04/11/2019 20:42

I think this is a fab idea. Back in another life (pre my 4 dc) I would drive out from London to stay in a cottage for the weekend, always hated having to go out again to find food when I was tired.
I'd happily have paid £15-20 per person for dinner and dessert.

ArtistOfTheFloatingWorld · 04/11/2019 20:44

Sounds lovely. £15-£20 would be great, I'd pay. The option of some nice antipasti/bread and a bottle of wine would be attractive to me too

ZsaZsaMc · 04/11/2019 20:46

I think it’s a great idea - but particularly impressed with the unpacked shopping!

Where are you based?!

beckyvardy · 04/11/2019 20:54

You could do a hamper option.

Cheeses, crackers, wine etc with chocolates.

Where are you based op? I'd stay if your not too far

BikeRunSki · 04/11/2019 21:07

@SnugglySnerd, at least the riding popularity of veganism has stopped the default veggie option being goat’s cheese! I can’t stand that stuff!!

Instatwat · 04/11/2019 21:07

It’s a nice idea but without knowing whether you’re a decent cook or not, I wouldn’t pay personally (especially with the options of pubs nearby that I can look up on tripadvisor).
