Have you ever fallen in love with a place...

...and if so, did you do anything about it?

Recently I spent a couple of nights at the coast and the best way I can describe it is that my soul fell in love with the place. I’m seriously thinking of upping stocks and moving there. (I am in a bit of a midlife rethink place in general).

Has anyone else ever felt like this and what did you do about it?

Leeds. I studied there in the late 80s and when we went there for an open day for elder DC it felt like a reunion with an ex. It's a busy, brash, lively, ugly city that's a great laugh on a night out. I'd live there, not sure the rest of the family would (they prefer it greener and quieter).

Also Iceland.. so beautiful.

Babamamananarama · 03/11/2019 21:01

A small southern Spanish city. I lived there for a period of time while doing my MA, adored it and had such an amazing time. Try to visit at least once a year (now have a good friend living there on my recommendation) and every time feel like I've come 'home' to a part of me that stays there. It's a place I think I could live very very happily in another universe.

Wizzbangpop · 03/11/2019 21:07

Yes lincoln- ended up going to uni there for 3 years

ArtificialArctophile · 03/11/2019 21:09

A wee village in SW Mallorca. It's about as far removed from Magalluf as you can get.

Nat6999 · 03/11/2019 21:10

I love Filey, we always went there as children for our holidays, it is still virtually the same now 40 years later. The other place I love isn't on land, I fell in love with the P & O ship Oriana, went on a cruise & felt at home from the moment I stepped aboard. Sadly she has been sold now & is at the other side of the world, but I would love her to come back.

Gonetoofarmaybe · 03/11/2019 21:12

Thankfully - where I live now (beautiful vibrant affluent town in south east England within an hour of London)

And where is lived before here- London

Must be awful to live somewhere that you don’t think is fantastic

Sarahlou63 · 03/11/2019 21:15

Visited Ireland for the first time in 1993 and fell deeply in love. Moved to Dublin in 1997 but only found out in 2000 that I am 1/4 Irish.

Now live in Portugal and whilst the pull is not as visceral as Ireland it's warmer and much, much cheaper!

Foslady · 03/11/2019 21:17

Used to feel like that about the Isle of Mull but I now associate it with the ex so I no longer feel peace there.
I actually felt that way about Jamaica after visiting earlier this year, I’d love to go back and explore more

kerkyra · 03/11/2019 21:32

Corfu for me. It's very special and draws me back. I interailed and explored in the late eighties, did the party resorts in my twenties, honeymoon was there and I've taken the kids recently.

I often look at rightmove and think one day I may live there. A two bed little place in the olive groves.

user1471453601 · 03/11/2019 22:05

@vicacian, manage it because I'm very lucky. I had a pretty shit time once (single parent in the 1970s) and all the struggles that entailed.

Now retired and share a home with DD and her partner, so I have a certain amount of disposable income. I spend it going to said Greek island

VioletCharlotte · 03/11/2019 22:07

Yes - Edinburgh. I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could.

Hippopotas · 03/11/2019 22:15

Virginia or Pennsylvania USA. DH went on honeymoon there and we both love it. We looked but don’t qualify to emigrate to there so it’s a complete pipe dream.

weegiemum · 03/11/2019 22:21

Dh and I fell in love with the Outer Hebrides when he was in a student placement there just before we got married. We stood on a hillock somewhere in the middle of nowhere and said "we'll be back" - thinking for a holiday.

We ended up moving there, initially for 6 months but it ended up being 10 years, dc born there, bought a house ...

We're on the mainland again right now but we kept our house and visit as often as we can, and dh and I will probably retire there. It's an awesome place.

LoveMySituation · 03/11/2019 22:24

Liverpool. I love it there, I'm endlessly interested in all aspects of it and there's so much to do there. My heart soars when I am there. I love watching the ships in the Mersey all day, just sitting on a bench watching the world go by. I watch hours of YouTube videos of people visiting there. So many things I love are from there.
Where I am now feels so constricted. I hate it but have to stay for the moment. But I feel like I am living the wrong life here. Just counting down the years..

Swishyswash · 03/11/2019 22:38

A small town in the Alps. As soon as Brexit is sorted, we plan to buy a property there. The plan is to spend as much time there as possible to see if a permanent move is viable.

NameChangedNoImagination · 03/11/2019 22:52

Liverpool. Lived there for a short time in one of the worst houses and areas I've ever lived in, but the sense of contentment I had was unparalleled. Plotting to move back 2020 or 2021.

LoveMySituation · 03/11/2019 23:00

See you there @namechanged Grin

Elbowedout · 03/11/2019 23:03

Quite a few places actually. I love Oudenaarde in Belgium - well Flanders in general actually, and would happily holiday there regularly. I also adore the Scottish Highlands. Fortunately my DD now lives up there so I get to visit fairly often. Big city wise it has to be Milan and I also loved Kochi in India - I would love to go back there again. But my favourite place in the whole world is the little village where I live. We moved to this area for work, not necessarily planning it to be our forever home, but it would take a lot to make us move now.

Spookytoast3 · 03/11/2019 23:07

A little village in Northern Ireland. A place absolutely chocka full of hidden gems.

VanyaHargreeves · 03/11/2019 23:15

Yorkshire
The Chatsworth Estate
The West Of Ireland

Don't live in any sadly. Sad

Mummadeeze · 03/11/2019 23:16

Been to South Beach in Miami twice and felt really comfortable and happy there. But my heart is wedded to London. I don’t think I will ever be able to live anywhere else realistically. I would just miss it too much.

Getoffmylilo · 03/11/2019 23:18

A little corner of Spain, it holds a piece of my heart and has done for most of my life.

Legomadx2 · 03/11/2019 23:24

When I went to Manly in Australia I came home heartbroken that I didn't live there. It was a just so sunny and easy and nice.

It took me a full year to get over that.

Now I love London - it's so easy and beautiful and friendly and relaxed.

Also Denmark for their relaxed attitude, scenery, charm and fresh air. The endless smoked fish is the only downside.

beethebee · 03/11/2019 23:32

I would so, so love to live in Maine.

Vermont is my close second, then PEI or NB or NS.

I live on a small island now but it's hot and I want snow!
