I have a 5 year old and I'm 7 months preg, my kids grandparents have just gone and got a staffordshire bull terrier puppy. My OH isn't impressed and has expressed his views of the breed to his mum.
They looked after my eldest when she was a baby and we were hoping they'd do the same with my baby this time, but don't know how we feel.
The breed has a bad reputation, they said they'll get it trained but with all other dogs they've had, theyve never trained them 🤷🏻‍♀️
Anyone have a staffy and young kids?
I know every dogs different etc, I obviously just put my kids safety first.

The bull terriers attacking children are the one's owned by chavs that taunt them and make them fight with other dogs or totally neglect them. Even if not trained, a bull terrier in a nice home being cuddled and well looked after is very unlikely to attack anyone

Dh had a staffy
She was good with children as she was well trained

I was most upset when pregnant with my first child when pil got an Alsatian and couldn’t rest when her and subsequent brothers went there.
Yes, my children got badly bitten. One on the face, just missing her eye and the other had a chunk ripped out of his calf...but not by this dog
Both dogs who did this to my children were pub dogs
Can’t remember the breed of the first one, the second was a Rottweiler

Staffies are known as the nanny dog. My vair posh former in-laws had them when their children were small.
They got another one when DD1 was small, they got in well. When she was 5 it bit her in the garden, in-laws didn’t see it but the gardener was there and she was just petting her.
They told DD1 not to tell us and even when she told us on the phone “something has happened but I’m not allowed to tell you” they refused to tell either me or their son what had happened until they brought her back!!!
She never stayed there again, although she continued to see them at our house.
The bite was to her hand and required hospital treatment and a large dressing but there was no lasting damage.

If they look after your child, can you trust them to keep the dog away?

Clockstopped the fact only the gardener saw suggests that your former in-laws were not supervising.

Ddog was the loveliest and most gentle dog around children. It doesn’t mean I didn’t supervise or leave either children alone with them.

We have a rottweiler. A huge one. Dil asked me to have dgs from 5 months old. 2 nights every week. She knows ddog. She trusts me with dgs.
No issue.
Dgs is now 4 and loves ddog. Was very concerned when she was poorly.
Dgs isn't allowed unsupervised with ddog.
Dil knows I am a good ddog owner.
And a good dgm!!
Op you either trust mil or you don't.
Childcare or no childcare.
Your choice.

No they aren’t - this was invented recently as part of the bull terrier rehabilitation campaign.

A Natural Caretaker
Pit bull breeds are naturally strong, intelligent, and courageous. Their main goal is to please their owner. In the early 1900s, pit bulls were given the title of “Nanny Dog." They were known to be faithful, loving, and loyal, especially when it came to children. A child's safety was practically guaranteed. So what happened?

What Happened to the Nanny Dog?
Pit bulls were not considered nannies without good reason. They were even considered the most beloved dog breeds in England and the United States.
