Do you always remove babies coats etc before putting in car seat?? Even when it's freezing?

I don't have time to heat the car up before putting my 9 month old in and it's started to get a frost so it's really cold at the minute.
Too cold for me to put him in without warm clothing.
What do people do? Obviously I want him to be safe but also don't want him to get cold..

We always take the coat off and use blankets when it's really cold!

Ciwirocks · 01/11/2019 18:42

Warm cardigan and blankets? You can get liners for car seats a bit like cosytoes you use for buggies as well

SmileCheese · 01/11/2019 18:42

Yes you should always remove coats or snowsuits as otherwise the straps will be too loose to safely constrain a child should you crash.

Most people tend to cover the child with a blanket which should be perfectly sufficient in the UK. Your child will be fine and the car will be quick to warm up once you start driving so they wont freeze I promise.

Ok - try strapping your baby into the car seat in their coat. Then, without loosening the straps (unbuckle them only), remove your DC, remove coat & strap them back in.

I think you'll get it.

moreismore · 01/11/2019 18:44

I keep a blanket in the car for each child at this time of year.

Iggly · 01/11/2019 18:45

Blankets. They won’t die from a bit of cold if they’ve got blankets to heat them.

They could if their belts are too loose and you have an accident!

user1483387154 · 01/11/2019 18:45

I warm a blanket on a radiator and use that to wrap them up in as we got outside and for in the car.

AwdBovril · 01/11/2019 18:45

We always used blankets, cosytoes type things, or put the coat over DD back-to front (when she was older) so that she could put her arms through the sleeves. Obviously this is after she's strapped in, & always with the hood removed. Hat if necessary.

CabbagePatchKids · 01/11/2019 18:46

Absolutely every time.

I have a star suit from tuppence and crumble. It's expensive but great for the car as it's just thin fleece.

WeeDangerousSpike · 01/11/2019 18:50

Take off the coat every single time. In a crash the straps will squeeze the stuffing of the coat and will be far too loose. It is possible the baby could be thrown out of the seat completely.

I used to put the coat (so long as it had no hood) or a cardigan on backwards after I had strapped DD in. And a blanket over the legs.

WeeDangerousSpike · 01/11/2019 18:51

Oh, meant to add, DD was born in November, so it was very cold when she was very tiny.

Chopsicle · 01/11/2019 18:52

So when it's snowing etc do you hop
In the back seat to put on babies coats etc before taking them out?

OP posts:
verybookish · 01/11/2019 18:55

Yes, absolutely every time.

OP to your last question. I just try and wrap them up again as quickly as I can.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 01/11/2019 18:57

Always take their coat off. Way more important than them being cold for a few minutes. Definitely get a seat insert and have a blanket with you.

There are pictures of DD with a coat on in her car seat and I kick myself now. Even at risk of being whinged at, I tell people I know when I spot them putting their child in a car seat with a coat. Most people, like me, didn’t know.

SlimGin · 01/11/2019 18:57

Yes I usually put the coat on DD (she's 1) when we get to the destination. I usually unstrap her and shimmy her hands through the armholes whilst she's in the car, then button up properly when we're out. If she was younger I would just do everything with her in the car seat, unstrapped.

SmileCheese · 01/11/2019 18:58

So when it's snowing etc do you hop In the back seat to put on babies coats etc before taking them out?

You don't have to get into the back seat surely you just unbuckled your child and then put their coat back on. I would imagine it mostly depends on where you are taking them. If you are going inside once you leave the car then just leave the blanket covering them. It honestly doesn't get the cold in the UK for it to be a huge issue.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 01/11/2019 19:00

Yep, always. When my toddler was little and had to go to my mum's early on wintet mornings, we'd put blankets on him instead. Also,we had a fleece lined hoodie which was lovely and cosy.

When I tAke him to nursery, I do similar with the baby. I bought her a crochet/knitted type cardigan thing (quite thick) from M&S. Comfortable and warm. Plus blankets over her.

Camomila · 01/11/2019 19:01

DS didn't have a puffy coat his first winter, he had a really warm but thin fleece cardigan/jacket thing so it stayed on in the car. It came from a skiing shop (it was a present from my cousin who was working in Switzerland)

Then I'd put a blanket on his legs.

TheJoxter · 01/11/2019 19:03

layers! Warm base layers (merino and silk are good) make so much difference without being bulky. I think H&M have some at the moment

MustardScreams · 01/11/2019 19:04

Your baby can get a bit cold for 5 seconds whilst you put a coat back on! They don’t freeze the second cold air touches them you know.

MeadowHay · 01/11/2019 19:04

Our DD is 16m and we rarely go in cars as we don't own one, but yes we always take her coat off first no matter how cold it is. We keep a jumper on her and layer blankets on her if it's cold in the car and keep her hat and gloves on even.

thisisthetime · 01/11/2019 19:06

Always take coats off. It’s so hard to do the belts up with bulky coats on anyway even without the safety aspect. Plus the car doesn’t take ages to heat up so they’re fine with a blanket for 5 minutes. After that they’d be too hot anyway.

I just get mine out then put their coats on. Even in the snow. It only takes a few seconds and they have your body warmth while you’re doing it.

My mil hates babies/children/anyone at all being cold and once drove my 8 month old home in her car with her snowsuit on, a blanket over the top and the heating going. Dd was red and sweating, I was fuming. I’d rather they were too cold than too hot.

Thesearmsofmine · 01/11/2019 19:07

Always! Then if we are going to be outside I would get them out and put their coat on them. Or if going into a house then I wrap their blanket round them and take them in.

bonzo77 · 01/11/2019 19:07

Yep. Every time. Fleece onsie with feet and mitts is the biz in this situation. Fleece blanket in Top and a hat. All sorted. Mine never had puffy pram suits. Even now they’re in HBB with 3 point Belts, fleeces are easier.

Sunshinegirl82 · 01/11/2019 19:10

Morrck blanket for car seat.

Coat laid out in buggy on arrival, baby straight from car seat into pramsuit and zipped up.
