Do you always remove babies coats etc before putting in car seat?? Even when it's freezing?

I don't have time to heat the car up before putting my 9 month old in and it's started to get a frost so it's really cold at the minute.
Too cold for me to put him in without warm clothing.
What do people do? Obviously I want him to be safe but also don't want him to get cold..

Gemma....I hardly think you and other posters on here are the rest of the world. As other posters have already put up links to guidance that says the straps should be tightened overwinter clothing to ensure they are secure? And also that other things like blankets should nit be put behind baby.

Tabbymumz its very odd that you are so adament that you cant take 10 seconds to remove a babies coat to keep them safe. I personally do everything i can to protect my children

Damntheman · 04/11/2019 09:44

Yes I do it, I live in Norway so we are in Winter gear for 5-6 months of the year. It was -7 already this morning :) Make sure the layer closest to the child's skin is pure wool, that'll make a huge difference. A thicker wool layer on top is perfect but not necessary. Coats/Snowsuits off when going in the car, blanket on top. Mine have always been fine this way :) A good hat also helps but I find the child can overheat that way on longer car rides. Then unbuckle and into the snowsuit again before getting out of the car! Then again, I also take off my own winter coat getting into the car given it's bulky and the belt won't protect me as much.

OP you can also get heaters to put in your car if you want. Both battery driven and plugged into the car itself. These can warm cars surprisingly fast! (also handy for getting the bloody ice off the windshield)

Gemma.....can you ask yourself please why you are so adamant about having a go at me and putting in nasty little jibes like being a lazy mother and not protecting my baby. For the record, in case it wasnt clear, my babies were well protected, always have been and always will be. You do not know me, so please keep your nasty little aspersions to yourself. If someone else in this world decides to do something other than you, it is not the end of the world, and actually none of your business. It is not open season to have a go at them and call them a lazy parent or criticise them for not protecting their baby. When my babies were young, this was not a thing (taking off coats), nobody I know did it, we were told to tighten the straps. The link someone else put up also talked about tightening the straps over coats to ensure they are secure. Other people on here put blankets behind them which is against advice, yet you havent had a go at them.

And there is no evidence that any babies have slid out of coats. I will not be bullied by you, so please refrain from arranging me anymore.

TabbyMumz · 04/11/2019 10:03

Harranging, not arranging

TabbyMumz · 04/11/2019 10:05

There is clearly a difference between bulky snow suits and normal coats.

YouJustDoYou · 04/11/2019 10:29

I honestly cannot understand why a mother would rather risk their baby because they can't be arsed to take off a snow suit.

YouJustDoYou · 04/11/2019 10:29

Or a coat.

YouJustDoYou · 04/11/2019 10:32

And there is no evidence that any babies have slid out of coats

Did it evwn occur to you this is because people don't put their babies in the car seat with said coats in the first place!!!! Thts why its hard to "find evidence".Sweet Jesus. 😂😂

TabbyMumz · 04/11/2019 17:49

No..youjustdoyou......car seats have not just been invented, they have been around for at least 30 years. It was never a thing to take coats off, so although granted, some parents did, a lot did not. Not just in this country, but in others. So that's a hell of a lot of car journeys and incidences over the years of people leaving coats on. And there is no data of any incidences of babies sliding out of coats.

sociallyanxious · 04/11/2019 17:52

The JoJo polar fleece suits are good for this as they are thin like a fleece onesie but much warmer

TabbyMumz · 04/11/2019 17:52

And youjustdoyou....there is really no need to talk to me in that manner. Please dont. I've been polite on here. No need at all to say "sweet Jesus" in such a derogatory manner.

sociallyanxious · 04/11/2019 17:54

Also for older kids we tell ours ‘coats off quick and jump in the car !’ We so seatbelts quick and they put coats back on but back to front over the seatbelts to keep warm

BertieBotts · 04/11/2019 23:34

It was only the crash test where it looked loose to me. Most of the blog posts where they compare the tightened around coat to tightened around clothes look tight around the coat.

People reckon there is one brand of car seat blanket which is OK. I wouldn't use it myself. I would rather just tuck a blanket over the top.
