Mischief night

How did everyone fair last night. It was terrible by me, worst it’s ever been I think. Gangs of 20 plus youths roaming the streets causing mayhem. They pushed a car completely over, smashed windscreens, caused loads of damage in a local supermarket etc. They pulled the wing mirror completely off my car. This is all apparently in a naice area too! Hope it’s better tonight.

Mischief night isn't until 4/11! (Or at least it isn't in the North)

BIWitch · 31/10/2019 17:16

... although I see according to Wiki, it can also be 30/10:

Historical background
The earliest reference to Mischief Night is from 1790 when a headmaster encouraged a school play which ended in "an Ode to Fun which praises children's tricks on Mischief Night in most approving terms".[2] In the United Kingdom, these pranks were originally carried out as part of May Day celebrations, but shifted to later in the year, dates varying in different areas, some marking it on October 30, the night before Halloween, others on November 4, the night before Bonfire Night. In the UK it's the 4th November & originates from Yorkshire folklore. According to one historian, "May Day and the Green Man had little resonance for children in grimy cities. They looked at the opposite end of the year and found the ideal time, the night before the gunpowder plot."[2] However, the shift only happened in the late nineteenth century and is described by the Opies as "one of the mysteries of the folklore calendar"

Am I missing something? What the hell is Mischief Night?!

WombatStewForTea · 31/10/2019 17:37

@BIWitch I'm up north and mischief night is most definitely the 30th!

All quiet round here but a few towns nearby had very similar to what you've said @stoplickingthetelly that I wondered if it could be the same town but unfortunately it's probably just shit everywhere Angry

WombatStewForTea · 31/10/2019 17:39

@ManonBlackbeak
An excuse for unruly kids to be little shits and vandalise property as if they were 'tricking'

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 31/10/2019 17:39

Never come across it. Is it regional?

Candle1000 · 31/10/2019 17:39

I’ve never heard of mischief night.

jaggynettle · 31/10/2019 17:40

Am in scotland - never heard of it.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 31/10/2019 17:44

That’s because we have proper guising and turnip lanterns.

BIWitch · 31/10/2019 17:48

Nope. When I lived in Leeds it was always the night before Bonfire night!

Nanalisa60 · 31/10/2019 17:50

Never heard of it!! Were on Earth do you live!!

Sewbean · 31/10/2019 17:52

Never heard of it either thank goodness, it sounds awful.

MollyHuaCha · 31/10/2019 17:55

Where on earth do you live OP?

dementedpixie · 31/10/2019 17:59

Dont have it here either

Sirzy · 31/10/2019 18:01

Lots of damage around from the little shits including smashed windows at a new supported living home being built and cars overturned at two railway stations.

Not mischief but mindless vandalism

Sirzy · 31/10/2019 18:01

Local news has just said 1700 incidents on Merseyside last night Angry

Ginnymweasley · 31/10/2019 18:01

A bunch of kids threw fireworks into shops last night amongst other things. There is now a dispersal order in our local town cause of it. Idiots!!!

SuperficialSuzie · 31/10/2019 18:04

I'm from Leeds and mischief night was always 4/11 and very tame too when I were a lass.

fishonabicycle · 31/10/2019 18:04

Never even heard of it! Live in Kent.

annienone · 31/10/2019 18:05

Yes up north and definitely 4th Nov!

ceilihouse · 31/10/2019 18:15

It was like Beirut here on on the Wirral last night never heard of seen anything like it,

bikinibottommuffintop · 31/10/2019 18:17

It’s the night before bonfire isn’t it? ‘Miggy night’ up North.

ManonBlackbeak · 31/10/2019 18:18

So basically just an excuse for anti social behaviour then? My DM used to live in Liverpool, must ask her if she's ever heard of it.

ClashCityRocker · 31/10/2019 18:19

I'm north yorks and mischief night is 4th November. The shops all stop selling eggs and flour to under 18s.

When I was a kid toilet papering was the thing to do.

mnahmnah · 31/10/2019 18:21

I’ve lived in various parts of the north all my life and I’ve never heard of mischief night until this year
