So the new neighbour has got a drum kit.

Moved in 2 weeks ago, has been playing the drums every single day for about 5 hours each time. Rather annoyingly they've actually got rhythm and aren't that bad but ffs, I'm 8 houses away and its so loud. I work from home and even my colleague on the skype call can hear it. I feel really sorry for whoever is directly next door to them.

Is there rules/laws against this sort of nuisance?

Studio and soundproof cost a lot of money. Anyway I'm in a council house because my little brother is severally disabled. My students come to me.

INeedNewShoes · 31/10/2019 20:24

@TheDoctor73

If you are running a business as a drumming teacher I think you should invest something into soundproofing or look into getting a splitter so that you can plug two sets of headphones into an electronic kit.

You can claim expenses on new kit like this when you're doing your tax return which helps a little.

Your defensiveness on this thread isn't really helping the muscicians' cause. Being so immovable and unwilling to compromise or consider the effect on your neighbours is the sort of thing that gives musicians a bad name!

RolytheRhino · 31/10/2019 20:25

Maybe look into a different way of earning your living or travel to your students then? It's rather inconsiderate of you to leave the situation as it stands. Ultimately though, this thread is about the OP and her inconsiderate neighbor. If you'd like suggestions on your specific situation and how to be less inconsiderate yourself you probably ought to start a new thread.

@stucknoue

My dd is a semi pro musician, she practices at home. We are detached so noise is less of an issue and we restrict practice to 10am - 9pm (not continuously!)

Can I ask why you restrict it if you are detached? I have just moved house to a detached house as I was too conscious of my music in my semi. I play the piano and have a digital one so play with headphones, but had thought now I could play normally. It’s hard as obviously I can’t tell where the sound carries. I assumed it was ok now but maybe I need to check with my neighbours. I would be horrified to be that neighbour!

Thedoctor73 · 31/10/2019 20:36

Well I think u will find I was the one at the start that said about compromising with the drummer kindly that will work perfectly. If someone were to ask me kindly to turn them down I would gladly do so. I have said this several times. Is that really giving them a bad name? I'll admit that splitter idea is good I'll be looking into that. Thanks for that suggestion 👍.

Thedoctor73 · 31/10/2019 20:38

Restrict what?

TSSDNCOP · 31/10/2019 20:44

My DS plays drums and has an electric set with headphones. He’s also taught by a teacher and they use electric sets. They have an amp and an acoustic set, but the majority is taught on the electric set. DS has an acoustic set in my mum’s garage which has no neighbours.

Thedoctor you sound like one of those mellow fellas that just can’t understand why the wage slaves just can’t dig it.

Musicandad · 31/10/2019 20:54

Are you passionate about something should u be forces to practice with sub par equiptment as long as its duriing day and not. Past a resonable hour say 7pm whats the harm theyre honing their craft reapect it better than them roaming streets and getting in fights

Thedoctor73 · 31/10/2019 21:07

Yeah i agree with you.

EL2019 · 31/10/2019 21:08

Our council has an app that you can record the decibel level of the noise. We only had to put in a couple of recordings and give a few notes about times and duration and they responded really quickly.

Definitely worth investigating if your council has similar.

RolytheRhino · 31/10/2019 21:34

better than them roaming streets and getting in fights

Why is that the only alternative option? Confused

should u be forces to practice with sub par equiptment

Yes, if it's the only way that the situation is tolerable for everyone involved. We all have to live alongside each other and sometimes compromise is necessary.

WeshMaGueule · 31/10/2019 21:37

In what way is an electronic drum kit sub par?

TSSDNCOP · 31/10/2019 22:00

Yes. In what way exactly is the electronic kit recommended by music teachers and the drum shop sub-standard for practice?

stotty162 · 31/10/2019 23:32

as a parent and drummer i understand that it is difficult to balance volume for surrounding houses and kids, i reluctantly sold my acoustic kit when my youngest was born, and am looking into an electric kit, to answer the last question an electric kit is suitable for practice purposes but the issue boils down to price again, for a workable acoustic kit with mid range cymbals and hardware for about 800 quid..

the equivalent in an electric kit with decent hardware, pads that feel right instead of hitting rubber, cymbals that react the same as regular ones, and all programmed so they actually sound ok enough to class as drums, the price is 1500 quid upwards..

not taking the drummer in fault heres side, just trying to put some stuff in light.

the drummer in question for th OP is out of order and should have at least worked with them a bit more... not just douched out....

db1791 · 01/11/2019 06:18

Have you tried getting over yourself?
Attitudes like this are why there is a chronic shortage of drummers. Just ignore it and get on with your day.

Five hours every day is a bit excessive though.

Candle1000 · 01/11/2019 06:56

A shortage of drummers ? Confused Grin

ProseccoIsTheAnswerHere · 01/11/2019 07:08

Ah ha! Amused by these drummers in thread giving no shits about upsetting others

Councils do have the powers to intervene when its deliberate and unnecessary noise during daytime too. It’s quite the myth that they are resigned to specific hours.

ProseccoIsTheAnswerHere · 01/11/2019 07:09

Have you tried getting over yourself?
Have you tried consideration for others over your little drum kit

stotty162 · 01/11/2019 07:32

Ah ha! Amused by these drummers in thread giving no shits about upsetting others

to be fair the drummers here have mostly agreed the guys in the wrong....
and have said to deal with it be civil, not go round guns blazing....

WeshMaGueule · 01/11/2019 07:44

If you're a serious drummer £1,500 is not an excessive price to pay for a professional piece of kit, compared to other musical instruments.

boohome · 01/11/2019 08:02

@How2Help

Depending on how loud you are, your neighbours may be able to hear you even if you’re in a detached house.

We live in a detached house, as do our neighbours whose back garden backs onto our back garden. One of them is a drummer.
They always have the windows closed when they’re drumming, but we can clearly hear it if we’re in our back garden at the time.
We can faintly hear it in our house if we have our windows closed and the TV / radio are off, but not loudly enough for it to be irritating when we’re awake anyway.
They never play at antisocial hours, we never hear them drumming early in the morning or after about 8pm.

Thedoctor73 · 01/11/2019 08:12

What does sub par mean?

TreacherousPissFlap · 01/11/2019 09:11

Perhaps it's because it's half term and the noise will abate once the schools go back

DS is a guitarist and will cheerfully play for 3-4 hours a day at weekends. We however speak to all our neighbours and emphasise that they need to let us know if there's an issue. We also have extremely thick stone walls which dulls the noise somewhat.

Luckily we also have very tolerant neighbours Grin

WeshMaGueule · 01/11/2019 09:32

Sub par = below average

stotty162 · 01/11/2019 09:34

the 1500 wasn't for a professional piece of equipment...that was for a mid tier set... if your looking professional level electronic kit then your looking at the roland td50 kvx which is 8000 upwards.....

and again i stuck by the OP in this 1, not the drummers side, so the people upset my what i said i apologies but i was giving a fair side to both drummers and others around them.... not just sticking up for drummers
