Do you and DH / DP vote for the same party?

Dp votes Tory, I vote Labour (although Im tempted by Lib Dem this time) Our votes effectively cancel each other out.

Neither of us can see the other side. We're in the North East. Both teachers, both from very working class backgrounds.

Just wondered if any other couples are similar?

Helmlover1 · 31/10/2019 10:15

Yes, we will both be voting Labour.

CameraTime · 31/10/2019 10:24

DH used to spoil his ballot paper every time, claiming "they're all useless". I had strong words, and now he votes the same way as me (he claims).

Possibly not exactly the same. He very firmly believes in one party and I am not so entirely convinced (especially at the moment) and have voted for other parties in the past, but we are at similar ends of the spectrum. We both voted the same in the referendum.

I’d struggle with a partner who had a hugely different value base to mine - and that would be reflected in our politics.

Agree with this.

Thiswayorthatway · 31/10/2019 11:13

I don't know who DH votes for and wouldn't dream of making him tell me. We discuss politics and agree and differ, but his vote us his and mine is mine.

OverthinkingThis · 31/10/2019 11:18

We don't tell each other who we vote for. Our political views are generally fairly similar but we live in a safe seat for a party we are both opposed to. His tactical voting approach and mine could be different. We did vote the same in the Brexit referendum.

KatyCarrCan · 31/10/2019 11:20

We rarely vote the same. When I was a Labour supporter, he voted Conservative. Then he started voting Labour because he liked Blair but I stopped voting for them because of the Iraq War. Ultimately our aims and values aren't that far apart. We just disagree on the best political system to deliver them. He is more pragmatic. I'm more idealistic.
We talk about politics all the time. But don't argue about it. We respect each other's pov.

amusedbush · 31/10/2019 11:21

We are both SNP (I'm a paid-up member). We both support Scottish independence and we both voted Remain.

I couldn't be with a Tory voter. A vote for them just says too much about a person's values.

leckford · 31/10/2019 11:22

We vote the same

SleepingStandingUp · 31/10/2019 11:28

DH always votes conservative, I always vote labour - we are fairly opposite sides of the political spectrum
Does this not become an issue in how you see life generally tho, raise the kids etc?
DH will go labour, I'll go Lib Dem or Green but we're both liberals. If he came out a Tory Leaver I'd worry that the difference that would make to how we are as a family

WellGoshDarnIt · 31/10/2019 12:24

I vote Lib Dem, have done all my life. DH used to as well but he's recently defected and is now a fully paid up member of the Labour Party. I can't stand Corbyn, so won't be joining him. We're both staunch remainers. I couldn't be married to him if he voted Tory/UKIP/Brexit party, it would be an absolute dealbreaker for me.

thecatsthecats · 31/10/2019 12:36

We vote the same. We didn't quiz one another - it only came up after three years together at university - both Lib Dems, living in Nick Clegg's constituency (ah, 2010... simple times).

We actually disagree on quite a few things, but that's all in how to achieve the same ends - not the ends. I think that's the difference.

(I can't see how MIL stands FIL - she's labour through and through, and he is openly, loudly and deliberately the worst kind of stereotyped sneering and selfish Tory he can be - and it's echoed all through his personality)

Auditoryhearing · 31/10/2019 19:12

Both swing voters.
I don't know who he votes for.
