The pioneer Woman, a question for regular watchers?

ShivD · 29/10/2019 10:04

Watch The Pioneer Woman, it’s is one of my family’s half term pleasures.

Is the Lodge separate from the house? If yes, what is the purpose of The Lodge if they have a (presumably) big house too?

Also, what’s a ‘home school day’?

I love Ree! And so does my husband

As far as I'm aware, the lodge is separate from the house and up at the top of the ranch. She rarely cooks for TV from her own kitchen, always from the lodge and she has to drive between the two because of the distance.
She lives in very rural Oklahoma and her kids didn't go to traditional schools because of distance I think. I follow her on social media and her youngest is late teens now and all the food network shows show him as about 8 so tells you how old they are.

Minzee · 29/10/2019 10:12

Not sure why they have the lodge. From what I can gather the ranch came with it so they use it for the tv show and as a base for the staff on the ranch too so they're not in her own house for their meals and so the cameras aren't too intrusive.

TheSpottedZebra · 29/10/2019 10:14

Yep. The lodge was a purpose built kitchen / filming studio. I think they may have run cooking courses there, before she was as successful.

The home schooling thing is also so as to free up the schedules for helping on the ranch, and as they are pretty religious. Plus rural Oklahoma is quite poor (apart from the rich ranchers), so the schools will be very poorly funded and possibly a bit shit.

Yes, I have watched much too much Food Network.

No, they built the house on family land, then the lodge too.

The Drummond family ate something like the 17th biggest landowners in the USA. They have a lot of land.

TheSpottedZebra · 29/10/2019 10:16

NB they didn't eat them. They ARE them.

Minzee · 29/10/2019 10:22

Thanks zebra, I feel like I've learned something! That makes more sense too.
Love food network, have it on for company when kids are at school. I usually hate the overtly over-the-top-ness of American cooking shows but PW is a lot more laid back than most.
Can't stand Ina Garten or guy feiri (or whatever his name is!)

hormonalprincess · 29/10/2019 10:41

The Drummond Estate is enormous. It takes them half an hour or so to drive from their home to the main gates and the nearest school is two hours away so logistically it made sense to homeschool. The older children are at university so it doesn’t appear to have held them back or anything and I’m sure they had the money for the best tutors available.
The family is one of the richest landowners in America and they get paid several million dollars each year to keep their land as pasture.

I've found my people.
Love Ree and family ....................... and cheese, butter and bacon Smile

ILiveInSalemsLot · 29/10/2019 13:17

Has anyone tried her recipes?

sniffingthewax · 29/10/2019 14:46

If it takes her half and hour to drive to her front gate she's obviously rubbing about "popping over" to deliver food to her friend for a pool party. I don't know what it is but something about her really grates on me. I do love Ina and her budder though.

hormonalprincess · 29/10/2019 16:46

I guess an hours drive to your nearest neighbour is ‘popping by’ for her. I do like how her and Ladd still work, if I was that wealthy I certainly wouldn’t be doing manual labour on the farm. Apparantely she met Ladd in a bar in New York, she’s originally a city girl through and through.

AutumnCrow · 29/10/2019 16:57

I love Ina and her budder and Jeffrey coming home for the weekend to eat the budder and the cream and more budder

Ree is very cool but her voice grates on me a bit tbh. I didn't like her no-carb low-carb stuff, it was far too bandwagony and not her usual style

timshelthechoice · 29/10/2019 17:01

Is that guy's name really Ladd? Fucking hell. Her voice is grating beyond belief.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 29/10/2019 17:04

I have one of her cookbooks, the recipes are really good, and quite easy to follow. I do have to either scale the recipes down, or have leftovers though!

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 29/10/2019 17:08

Ah Pioneer Woman is my guilty pleasure. I don't think I have ever tried any of her recipes - some look yummy and some a little bit car-crash-in-the-sweet-shop.

They live near Pawhuska I think which has an interesting if sad history re the Osage tribe.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 29/10/2019 17:16

Well according to trips advisor you can book for lodge tours and the drive takes 30 minutes from The Merch in Pawhuska to the lodge, she did say it takes 1.5 hours or so to get to Tulsa in one episode. She lives closer to her local town than my kids school

hotcrossbun4321 · 29/10/2019 18:39

Her show is a real guilty pleasure of mine! And the huge family wealth is a bit of a contrast to the folksy gee golly image. Her cinnamon rolls are delicious though.

My fave is Ina - love her beautiful Hamptons house

00100001 · 29/10/2019 18:43

I think she's actually really funny, but can't deliver... She kind of has British sense of humour that reads better than she speaks it iyswim?

NerdyCurvyInkedandPervy · 29/10/2019 18:46

I adore Ree! So much so that DP1 and I are considering a trip to stay at her hotel in Pawhuska as part of our honeymoon trip!

EpcotForever · 29/10/2019 18:46

Yes, lodge is a separate house but you can tour it. There are a few YouTube videos of people vlogging it. I am aware how sad I sound!

JumpyLiz · 29/10/2019 18:48

I like her writing better than the show. Her blog is witty and much edgier than she appears on the telly.

Ina Garten is my life goals though.

pallisers · 29/10/2019 18:53

I do a lot of her recipes and they are really very good.

I make these two at least once a week.

I watch in the US and 2 of her children are now in college in the latest episodes. She now has a mercentile (shop), deli, restaurant, hotel and sweet shop in Pawhuska - she reminds me of the heroine in A Town Like Alice.

ShivD · 29/10/2019 20:08

Sorry for for he radio silence and thanks for the answers. Now I know!

We come to my hometown for most school holidays and have no WiFi where we stay so it’s free view only and Ree is a firm morning favourite. I just love it!

It’s so hard to comprehend the huge amount of open space in these place when you’re from the UK. I’ve only ever been to built up US. I guess the Australian outback would be similar.

I'm sure I read once that the ranch is a similar size to Worcestershire.

Love Ree, love her recipes (although I'm dairy free at the moment so a lot of them are out - there's only so many dairy replacements I can cope with!)
