Off for a 3 day trip with girlfriends to Copenhagen. Anybody been and can offer advice on where's good to go and see? Going next month. Thanks.

Copenhagen is lovely.
Tivoli at night is a must. The Carlsberg tour is a definite miss.
A boat trip is worth it.

One of the most fun things we did was a hot tug around the harbour in the evening. At the back of the Admiral hotel, we hired a motorised hot tub that was piloted for us around the harbour whilst we wallowed in hot water and drank champagne. The children jumped in the sea but it was pretty chilly.
Amelienborg Palace was nice; we watched the changing of the guard.
Shopping is fantastic.
Sitting under blankets drinking beer in Nyrhaven is a god way to waste an evening.

Copenhagen is beautiful but very pricy. Makes London prices look like a bargain. We went to Malmo in Sweden 🇸🇪 for the day. It was a nice bonus to have a taste of Sweden on the trip.

A fantastic bakery called Dessert Dragon (Dessertdragens Kageværksted) is right near the city hall and the main tourist walk...but it’s a locals place.
Don’t take a camera to Freetown Christiania, locals will harass you over it. Because they openly sell a lot of drugs there, mostly, but also because they resent becoming a sort of tourist attraction. But the public art and stuff is pretty worth seeing.
Bikes can be rented all around the city, as it’s the most common mode of transportation. You can rent them per hour (around 25 DKK) or for an entire day (120 DKK).
The Design Museum is one of the best lunch options in the city. Of course, walk around the museum, but save time to eat lunch there in the cafe which serves traditional smørrebrød at reasonable prices.
If you want to visit an old-style Danish bar, head to Bo-Bi. The beers are cheap, the atmosphere is fuggy, because you are still allowed to smoke, and the only things to eat are hardboiled eggs and peanuts.
Some of the museums have free entry on certain days of the week. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek gallery is free on Sundays, the Museum of Copenhagen on Fridays and the Hirschsprung Collection, Royal Danish Naval Museum,Royal Arsenal Museum and Thorvaldsen Museum are all free on Wednesdays. Other museums like the Post and Telegraph Museum, and the David Collection of Islamic art are free all the time.

Agree with Tivoli at night and Nyrhaven. Christiania is worth a visit but I found it quite unsettling so we didn't stay too long.

MyOtherProfile · 29/10/2019 05:52

I'm sure there's an episode of Travel man in Copenhagen. They are always worth watching before you go somewhere.

M0nsterpumpk1n · 29/10/2019 06:01

We didn’t like Malmo, quite scruffy and boring with very little of interest. TiVo li is expensive so time it at night but a must do. Boat trip good and Amelienborg changing of guard is near Nyrhaven. Christiana can be a bit scary, didn’t have a great atmosphere if I’m honest. Danish museum with Bog people good. We loved Louisiana, just gorgeous but it’s a whole day out, quite easy on train. Get a Dop cart hot dog.

Starisnotanumber · 29/10/2019 09:55

Everything can be paid for by credit card we took currency and ended up paying in cash in a restaurant on the last day just to use it up.
If you haven't got a card with no foreign exchange fees then Halifax clarity or santander zero are OK if you can get one.
You could consider Copenhagen card which you can pick up from airport its valid for a number of hours not days and includes all travel including from airport. Also covers entrance to tivoli Gardens but not the rides a hop on bus trip and boat ride amongst other things.

Letstalkabout6 · 29/10/2019 18:58

Thank you all so much. Great advice from you all.

I went on a bike tour, it was a great way to see around and get your bearings and the guide told us the history of the city.

Copenhagen is amazing for cycling. Most roads have a 2 lane cycle path. I would also recommend hiring bikes to get around

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 29/10/2019 19:59

Love Copenhagen
Agree Tivoli-very cool and great Aperol spritzes although I think they have been declared out of favour by MN

Paper Island brilliant-could spend hours there-go hungry!!

Nyhavn beautiful-you can walk everywhere. Bring comfy shoes and enjoy the wander.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 29/10/2019 20:03

Love Copenhagen! (Am off there this weekend!)

There’s a restaurant called Koefed which is amazing (one of my top meals ever!)

Juno bakery cardamom buns are heavenly

Boat tour excellent

Nyrhaven is lovely to walk around

You need a Rejsekort card for buses (or small change), their transport is excellent.

Enjoy!

Would you happen to know how much these where? Are these the same as the Copenhagen cards mentioned before?

I live here 👋. I would recommend the canal tours, Tivoli if open, drift around the city, Nyhavn and all the museums mentioned by pp, if interested. Frelser kirke (our savior's church?) is beautyfull and all the castles. Louisiana in Humlebæk is beautiful. If you go to Louisiana, Kronborg (Hamlet) is 20 min. away by train/foot in Helsingør.

Take care around the central station in cph. and unless it is a must avoid the little mermaid. If you go on the canal tour you will see her there.

Have a lovely time Smile.

Re. Link choose English in menu.

ExpletiveDEVILighted · 29/10/2019 21:41

We used the public transport app (DOT something IIRC) when we went last year, it was really easy to use, we had 24 hour passes to use on normal and water buses, we used the CityMapper app for live travel information. We didn't bother with the tourist boats, if you had a map the water bus was fine for seeing the sights.

Some food places didn't take cash at all, only cards.

JessicaRarebit · 29/10/2019 21:50

I went years ago with my DP and it was lovely. Mirroring what others have said Tivoli is lovely and the canal boat tours shouldn’t be missed. We took our bikes and I was quite amazed at how cycle friendly it was, everyone was on their bikes.

And of course not forgetting the shops.

chomalungma · 29/10/2019 21:58

We camped near there for a night and spent the day in Copenhagen. Public transport seemed great and very cheap. You can get a day card for the system.

We just got some bread and ham to make sandwiches.

Great to see the bikes and scooters you can hire. Only expense was a beer in an outside restaurant.

We had a great time just walking around.

Shockers · 29/10/2019 21:59

There’s a lovely organic restaurant in the middle of Tivoli, but I can’t remember its name. Tivoli was a bit Scooby Doo- I loved it and I’m not usually a theme park fan. We enjoyed the design museum too.

Starisnotanumber · 30/10/2019 10:34

Copenhagen card is quite expensive but I found it really useful I think it was about 95.00 for 3 days. It covers fun stuff like boat rides and the zoo( where there are pandas,) cultural stuff like museums and all transport for 72 hours from first use including train from airport to main station and the bus or metro system.

Letstalkabout6 · 30/10/2019 12:32

@MyOtherProfile
You mentioned Christiania and found it unsettling. What is this place and why was it unsettling? Thanks.

Letstalkabout6 · 30/10/2019 12:39

@Madambee
What might happen around the station? I'd rather be forewarned.

OP posts:
theoriginalmadambee · 30/10/2019 12:57

@Letstalkabout6
The area is not the nicest, as with a lot of central stations ime. If you go one way you come straight out to Tivoli, if you go to Istedgade it is very mixed (i don't go there if I can help it).
But some of the not so nice areas are now quite hipster too. The meat marked area has a lot of nice restaurants, but you may still encounter drug addicts hanging about. I personally stay away from Nørrebro station (not Nørreport) and ask my dc the same. But some find the place colourfull Grin._

As for Christiania, I know it is a very touristy thing. I have never been there. But if the weather is good Christianshavn (next to Christiania) is nice. Also kastellet is nice (park).

But ask away i even have a couple of favorite restaurants.

MyOtherProfile · 30/10/2019 14:38

Christiania is a kind of hippy community. It started as a squat and was kind of lawless but I think it may have changed somewhat. It was like a new community that grew up in some old military area I think. It's interesting to see but I found it unsettling, maybe because of the smell of weed when I had a little baby with me!

Letstalkabout6 · 30/10/2019 14:43

Thank you @Madambee and @MyOtherProfile really helpful. Any restaurant recommendations would be gratefully received. Thanks again everyone.

Yes don't worry about getting currency, you won't need it (or in Sweden if you go there, I'd miss Malmo and go to Lund, it's only an extra 25 mins on the train and is a very pretty university city).

Food is expensive in Copenhagen (and drinks!) but entry fees for things are not.

Another vote for Kastellet.
