Spooky / scary films for 11 year old?

My nearly-11 year old has asked to watch a scary or spooky film with his DDad and me this half term.

Can anyone recommend any? I'm struggling to think of any!

I've been thinking about some of the scary films I watched when I was young - there was no such thing as a 12 rating then. I guess some of the 15s would be 12s these days? (I'd be happy with him watching a 12).

Like, the Lost Boys for example - I can't remember it being THAT scary, but it's been years since I last saw it, am I forgetting the scary bits?

He's really keen to watch Stranger Things too (which I LOVED) but I'm not sure. Would you let a 11 year old watch the first season of Stranger Things?

For me stranger things would be too scary for an 11yo.

The Lost Boys is ok, surely? It's fairly tame. Otherwise maybe Coraline, the witches or Beetlejuice?

MakeLemonade · 26/10/2019 23:26

Watched Hocus Pocus with my 11yo tonight and she enjoyed it.

The Lost Boys is ok, surely? It's fairly tame well - I think so, but I haven't watched it in years! I've realised that I don't remember films from my childhood very accurately, especially the inappropriate stuff!

For example a few years ago now, we started watching the Goonies with DS - but turned it off, there were loads of scary bits and swearing I had absolutely no recollection of! I was really surprised. (This was a few years ago, he's old enough for it now)

I thi the others is a 12. Ghostbusters is now a 12 (there’s an insinuated blow job that upped the rating a few years ago from PG).

Jaws was upped from PG to 12 a few years ago too.

Is there anything that he’d be more into? Would he rather supernatural?

TitchyP · 26/10/2019 23:41

Recent Goosebumps films are good for that age group.

Woodlandwitch · 26/10/2019 23:43

The Witches
Hocus Pocus
Beetle juice (might not be suitable)

Another Tim Burton film?

yetanothernameforMN · 26/10/2019 23:44

He saw Ghostbusters a year or more ago - and loved it.

I think he's after watching something with jump scares.

He plays "Five Nights at Freddies" at his friends house and is really into it. That's pretty gruesome I think.(Age rating 13).

He's not been allowed to watch a "proper" horror film so far, I've always said he's not old enough. But he asked if we could watch something scary this half term (next week for us) and I think he's probably old enough to handle a bit of a fright. He loves blimming 5 nights at Freddies (I think it's awful!)

He pretty mature for his age - he often reads books aimed at older children. But then again, he is only (nearly) 11, I don't want to totally traumatise him!

He's quite geeky. When he's old enough, I know Stranger Things will be right up his street.

Not spooky, but we just watched Tremors. It's a good monster movie!

There is swearing in it which if you're bothered about then you might be out of luck. Most films above a PG will have some swearing.

ActualHornist · 26/10/2019 23:44

Mine are nearly 11 also btw which is why I chose it.

MiddleClassProblem · 26/10/2019 23:45

U films can have swearing...

yetanothernameforMN · 26/10/2019 23:45

Ooh, also, we're going to watch it together so it'd be great if it was a decent film!

Watership Down is a U. OMFG!!! Shock Shock Shock (This isn't news to me, just still shocked by it! One of my favourite films from my childhood though)

Not particularly bothered by swearing. DS can handle a bit of swearing. Doesn't want to swear himself - tells me & DP off if we slip up and swear in front of him! Hmm

ET they say shit and penis breath. But we don’t remember it so it can’t be that much of a problem 😁

yetanothernameforMN · 26/10/2019 23:50

Tremors - is that like like Dune? Or was Dune the book and Tremors the film, even? Or is it just 2 films on a similar theme?

Does it start with a skeleton up a tree? (Very hazy memory of something like this... )

OP posts:
MiddleClassProblem · 26/10/2019 23:53

Poltergeist?

ActualHornist · 26/10/2019 23:54

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was a delicious horror when I was that age. I remember dad setting up the lounge so we could watch it together.

The House with a Clock in it's Walls.
Gremlins or Critters (Gremlins terrified me as a child!)
Paranorman
Frankenweenie
Corpse Bride
Beetlejuice
Casper
Monster House
Return to Oz

MiddleClassProblem · 26/10/2019 23:55

Tremors is like big holes in the ground (no spoilers) and Kevin Bacon (unless I’m misremembering) running around. But I don’t the special effects stand up in this day and age.

MiddleClassProblem · 26/10/2019 23:55

Monster house is creepy but even the goodies look creep 😂

ActualHornist · 26/10/2019 23:55

The only thing that links Tremors and Dune is giant worms Grin

Here's the IMDB page for Tremors. Set in a tiny town called Perfection, giant worms start killing people.

ActualHornist · 26/10/2019 23:57

Tremors is the type of film I classify as 'jolly good fun' Grin

It also spawned perhaps my first ever crush, on Kevin Bacon Blush

I feel like that's quite a specific niche Grin

Scream 1? It’s an 18 but Scream 4 is a 15 even though it’s much more violent so it might be ok.

The Craft?

Hocus Pocus (PG, I think.)

Edward Scissorhands

One of the Chucky films

Beetlejuice

IT? (haven’t seen the new versions though but the old ones are good, might be too old fashioned for him though)

I hate Five nights at Freddys. I was made to play it once and was an absolute jumping wreck throughout. When a monster “got me” I almost fell off the chair.
