Spooky / scary films for 11 year old?

My nearly-11 year old has asked to watch a scary or spooky film with his DDad and me this half term.

Can anyone recommend any? I'm struggling to think of any!

I've been thinking about some of the scary films I watched when I was young - there was no such thing as a 12 rating then. I guess some of the 15s would be 12s these days? (I'd be happy with him watching a 12).

Like, the Lost Boys for example - I can't remember it being THAT scary, but it's been years since I last saw it, am I forgetting the scary bits?

He's really keen to watch Stranger Things too (which I LOVED) but I'm not sure. Would you let a 11 year old watch the first season of Stranger Things?

I think an 18 is out!

I'm looking for stuff more around the 12 mark- or old stuff that was classified 15 back in the day but would have been 12 these days.

Think we might go for Indiana Jones - which isn't Halloweeny but he hadn't seen it yet and it's essential viewing really isn't it!
Suspect we may have to deconstruct the sexism though!

And The Others and Coralie for spookiness.

Would be great to have a jump scare one also.

Looks like we're having a film week not a film night!

Decided against Stranger Things till he's older. It's funny how quickly I forget the detail of programs & films - even ones I love! I'd forgotten quite how creepy it is - I don't think DS has seen anything like that before, it won't hurt to wait a couple of years.

I hate FNAF too. But DS and his mates love it. They've been into the characters for a couple of years now - long before they ever had access to the actual game.

Are goosebumps more spooky or jump-scary (or both?)

I really enjoyed Edward Scissor Hands at the time. Would DS? I have no idea! Maybe worth a try...

My eleven year old loved watching The Hole from Netflix. About two boys that move to a new town with their mum and find a trapdoor in the cellar. Beetle juice is great, also another big hit with her. She has watched IT ( the new version, part 1) as it is a 15 and she badgered her big sister silly to let her as it's my favourite story ever. She really enjoyed it and unlike me at 11 who thought it was just a shape changing monster , she got it right away that he feeds on fears and each child has them but adults tend to ignore or hide theirs so can't see him but are affected by it.

DD is 4 and really into spooky, scary films and has seen a lot mentioned here as a result. Nightmare Before Christmas was the catalyst. She’s seen both goosebumps. I would say they are particularly jumpy, maybe more the second one. I think I found it scarier because I read the books (at around 21), and she doesn’t understand the creepiness of ventriloquist dummies! Also I was a massive chicken as a kid 😂

The others is jumpy if I recall.

Nightmare Before Christmas?

@yetanothernameforMN we've just finished Temple of Doom and it was a hit! Have started Raiders of the Lost Ark next, but it's less 'Halloweeny'.

We watched Gremlins and Beetlejuice on NYE 2017 when DD2 was 11 and she enjoyed both of them. She has watched stranger things since but she is a few years older now.

My DS has just turned 11 - he has watched every episode of stranger things and loves it, it’s one of his favourite programmes.

expatinspain · 27/10/2019 21:21

My DD finished Stranger Things just before she was 10. I think it's absolutely fine for an 11 year old.

Tigger03 · 27/10/2019 21:32

The mummy with Brendan Fraser - I loved it at that age.

Otherwise Coraline, hocus pocus, ghostbusters, goosebumps, the little vampire , corpse bride, the witches, gremlins

How about The Omen? Or is that too scary?

I wanted to watch Shaun of the Dead but my son says it’s too scary.

ActualHornist · 28/10/2019 09:54

The Omen! Seriously?!
