Does anybody wear distance glasses AND reading glasses?

How on earth do you manage Grin

I have worn readers for years, I just push them down my nose a bit if I want to use my phone when I'm watching tv and just look over the top of them. Now I have distance glasses too and they do make the tv clearer, but I'm sat here chopping and changing trying to work out the best combination Blush

What do you do?

You get varifocals! I'm shortsighted in one eye and longsighted in the other, but one eye is not great at either distance or close stuff, and I have astigmatism too. Hmm Varifocals are great, even with my ultimate challenge of knitting in front of the tv - I no longer have to keep struggling to re-focus as I look up and down.

Watto1 · 26/10/2019 21:27

I’ve got varifocals. Not everyone gets on with them but I like them.

missyB1 · 26/10/2019 21:27

Same as you basically! I used to be able to wear contact lenses and they don’t work anymore even though I paid for multifocal ones. I really don’t want varifocal glasses. I just want eyes that work 😩

Varifocals...did your optician not discuss this with you?

greypetex · 26/10/2019 21:28

Sorry, I was wondering what people do who wear separates, surely I can't be the only one?

TroysMammy · 26/10/2019 21:29

I use specs for close up. Use distance for driving somewhere new only because words on signs are clearer and at night because the lenses are anti glare. As I keep my distance specs in the car I struggle if I watch Pointless Grin.

greypetex · 26/10/2019 21:29

Varifocals...did your optician not discuss this with you?

Yes, of course.

Varifocals or distance contacts plus super strength readers on top.

fallfallfall · 26/10/2019 21:30

Dh, reading and driving then driving sunglasses...so 3 pairs almost identical frames...

greypetex · 26/10/2019 21:32

I have the sunglasses for driving too Grin

Contact lenses, one for close up and one for distance.

Fleetheart · 26/10/2019 21:33

Varifocals is the only way to go. They are miraculous!

MyMommyYourMommy · 26/10/2019 21:33

Yes! But my driving glasses prescription has not changed for 30 years and the optician says my near sightedness should be balanced by my far sightedness but I find it doesn't. However, I do detailed art work and need (off the peg) glasses for very detailed work which I need to remove as soon as I look up from the work. I fear I look vain by constantly removing and replacing glasses! (small complaint)
I don't mind my many pairs I am so grateful for the ability to see far away these days!

Bluebellbike · 26/10/2019 21:33

I do. Tried varifocals and didn't get on with them. I just use my distance glasses and changeto reading glasses for reading, using computer, phone, etc. I didn't get on with varifocals as I only see with one eye and have no peripheral vision on either side. I tend to wlk into things and bang my head/face a lot so my glasses get bent. Varifocals only work if they are in exactly the right position on your face and mine mostly weren't. 😏

NaToth · 26/10/2019 21:33

I can't have varifocals. My optician says they won't work with my prescription, so I just put up with the inconvenience.

DramaAlpaca · 26/10/2019 21:38

I swapped between distance glasses and readers for a few years because I was too vain to admit I was old enough for varifocals. I used to wear the readers indoors at home or at work and the distance ones when I was out & about or driving, but looking back it was a bit of a pain. I finally cracked & got varifocals & I've never looked back, they are brilliant.

chartreuse · 26/10/2019 21:39

I can't wear varifocals, they gave me terrible headaches. I've gone back to distance and reading glasses, its quite irritating, I never seem to have the ones I want. I've tried to make it easier by getting lots of pairs so I have 1 pair of each by my bed/ in the kitchen/ in my bag. The house is littered with glasses!

lazylinguist · 26/10/2019 21:41

Wow - I didn't realise so many people can't wear or don't get on with varifocals! I was fine with mine from the minute I walked out of the optician's. Not sure what would help you then, OP.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/10/2019 21:47

You can have one contact lens for distance and one for reading, can you do the same with the lenses in a pair of glasses?

I have one varifocal contact lens as have astigmatism in the other eye. I still have to wear reading glasses with my contacts if I am doing really close work.

madmother1 · 26/10/2019 21:54

I have one normal every day glasses. Then I have distant sunglasses or distant glasses for the car. Then o have my 'business" glasses for the computer. I can wear up to 4 pairs of glasses per day! I'm going for bifocals or varifocals next time.

DramaAlpaca · 26/10/2019 21:56

lazylinguist same here, I was warned they might be hard to get used to but mine were perfect from the minute I put them on.

mineofuselessinformation · 26/10/2019 21:59

I've recently got varifocals and they were difficult to get used to, but I'm very pleased with them (despite the cost - is that what is putting you off?)
My long distance vision is good enough to manage without them, so I have a pair of polarised sunglasses also, should I need them.

greypetex · 26/10/2019 21:59

Wow - I didn't realise so many people can't wear or don't get on with varifocals! I was fine with mine from the minute I walked out of the optician's.

The softening round the edges makes me wobbly and I have a balance problem as it is.

Not sure what would help you then, OP.

I think I'm destined to tie myself in knots with lots of pairs of glasses Grin

OP posts:
OhTheRoses · 26/10/2019 22:01

varifocals here too. I do think a really good independent optician helps though. I had some made by a high street place and they were hopeless. Independent optician has got them right every time. I have quite a complex prescription and need a lot of thinning and a new pair of specs costs me about £700. Ouch.

ProperVexed · 26/10/2019 22:02

I'm picking up my first pair of varifocals this week as I'm utterly sick of glasses everywhere except where I need them. Hoping they are going to change my life,
