Does anybody wear distance glasses AND reading glasses?

How on earth do you manage Grin

I have worn readers for years, I just push them down my nose a bit if I want to use my phone when I'm watching tv and just look over the top of them. Now I have distance glasses too and they do make the tv clearer, but I'm sat here chopping and changing trying to work out the best combination Blush

What do you do?

I'm another one with several pairs of glasses. Three single vision pairs for reading, laptop and desktop, one pair of varifocals for normal use plus a pair of varifocal sunglasses (my optician loves me!)

I saw a consultant a few years ago to see if anything could be done. He diagnosed 'bag of specs' syndrome and said that unfortunately I'd just have to live with it.

I used to do the two contact lenses thing, one eye for reading, one for distance but can no longer tolerate contacts. I do have varifocals but don't like them so most of the time I manage with a pair of glasses for distance/driving and a pair of readers (plus one pair of sunglasses for driving and one for reading)

Varifocals don't need to be expensive! ASDA is the place to go for them no extra cost if you varifocals and two pairs for one.

I have varifocal contact lenses and a pair of reading glasses to help me with really small type at work. It's not ideal but it gets me through.

MinesaPinot · 28/10/2019 13:37

Yes I do. I've got a pair for computer/reading at work, and then distance ones for driving etc. I've also got some great sunglasses lenses that slide over my distance glasses if I need them in the car.

My DH has varifocals and loves them. He suggested they may be good for me, but as I don't need glasses all the time as I can read perfectly well without glasses or with my regular sunnies on, so I don't want to go down that route unless I have to. It means carrying two pairs of glasses to work (3 if you include my sunnies) but I can cope with that.

UnitedRoad · 28/10/2019 13:42

I’ve needed them for distance for a long time, but am just beginning to need them for reading and sewing too. I’ve just got my first pair of reading glasses, and I hate them, and have hidden them in a drawer. When I’m wearing them it magnifies my books, but I can’t see anything around me.

I don’t need glasses for just wandering around the house. Things might be a bit blurry, but it looks better that way.

wowfudge · 28/10/2019 13:55

I wear contact lenses and have been given three alternatives to try now I need help with reading too. I didn't like the differently powered contact lenses as it just felt like I couldn't see straight. Reading glasses with my distance prescription lenses were a revelation when I did some sewing over the weekend. I have yet to try the varifocal lenses and want to do that when I don't have to drive anywhere!

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/10/2019 13:57

I have a balance problem but got used to varifocals and love them. The only time i notice a problem is walking down stairs, steps or a slope where I lose my horizon a bit. I just hold on to something and look straight ahead.

StanleySteamer · 28/10/2019 14:07

More expensive varifocals have a wider horizontal range which ought to reduce the wobbliness.

JamieFraserskneewarmer · 28/10/2019 14:09

Varifocals aren't always the answer! I got them on my optician's advice and then had to go back to get a pair of glasses just for work where I am in front of a screen for long hours. Varifocals were absolutely hopeless for work. So, in answer to your question, you get used to mutiple pairs of glasses and curse loudly when you leave a pair behind!

MintyMabel · 28/10/2019 14:12

I could have written this post. I'm struggling to get used to my new varifocals, especially the blurry edges. I think I'm going to have to work with two pairs.

AgathaF · 28/10/2019 14:24

Minty how long have you had your varifocals? I found my first pair took a couple of weeks to get used to and another couple of weeks on top of that to be really comfortable. Did you get the ones with the widest clear field of vision? They usually offer 3 or so different options for this. If not, if might be worth going back and upgrading to the most expensive ones for the best clear field.

CouldBeOuting · 28/10/2019 14:28

I’ve just been prescribed reading glasses and distance glasses (haven’t actually got them yet). Optician told me I would not be able to do what currently do which is watch TV while doing some cross stitch, it will have to be one or the other 😔.

I can’t have varifocals or bifocals because I suffer from vertigo and they would exacerbate the condition. At my eye test a year ago I was fine now I suddenly need glasses for driving and telly, nothing for walking around and separate glasses for reading and sewing. I thought I was fine.... years ago I used to wear a single contact lens but lenses aren’t an option for me apparently. I’m going to have to get a bigger handbag if I’m going to have to carry two pairs of glasses around all the time.

Ffsnosexallowed · 28/10/2019 14:30

I take my glasses off to read, wear reading glasses with my contact lenses.

MulticolourMophead · 28/10/2019 14:49

I either wear varifocals, or distance contact lenses with reader glasses. I do craft stuff, so got a pair of high magnification glasses to wear with contacts for close work.

janj2301 · 28/10/2019 19:58

Hubby has reading/computer glasses, tv glasses and driving glasses. 3 pairs and never where he needs them. I seem to spend hours up and down stairs locating glasses. (He's disabled)

peridito · 28/10/2019 20:22

Another vote for Asda .I was sceptical but thought at £45 it was worth a shot . Mine are varifocals and they are great .Though I've been wearing for years and used to them .

Mother87 · 28/10/2019 21:45

Another chopper and changer...🤦🏻‍♀️sometimes I carry 3 pairs of glasses : reading/distance for tv & cinema/sunglasses... i really need a 4th pair of sunglasses for distanceConfused Varifocals were discussed very briefly but I just didn't think i'd get along with them
