Dc1 is 8 and I'm trying to expand their repetoir of movies and start moving away from kiddie films.

I want to show them the following and not sure when is age appropriate. What would you do?

Titanic
Sister Act
Grease
Mamma Mia
Deep impact
Terminator (dhs query!!)
Jaws
Castaway

Grease my 7 year old has watched and she's watched bits of sister act - mainly the singing bits

hardyloveit · 26/10/2019 11:46

Oh and she loves mamma Mia and number 2. She's a big fan of musicals

Isitme13 · 26/10/2019 11:47

Why are you trying to move away from kids films for an 8 year old? (Genuine, not snarky)

My almost 8 year old won’t be seeing any of those anytime soon.

My 12 year old has seen Grease from that list.

Isitme13 · 26/10/2019 11:48

Oh, and mamma Mia

SheruMoo · 26/10/2019 11:48

Don't do Jaws if you ever do beach holidays! I can't imagine an 8 year old would want to watch any of those movies really? Grease would be fine if they fancy it.

It's more a move from the animated ones we've seen a zillion times. She's seen Annie and Cheaper by the Dozen etc so we are in that phase of still young kids movies but less animation

Terminator is a 15 so I’d not show that one. But the rest should be ok, if she’s remotely interested in them. Except maybe Jaws if she’s the least bit anxious around swimming/water!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 26/10/2019 11:52

The BBFC is there for a reason.

There are plenty of children's films that aren't animated. There was a thread not so long ago - have a search.

CantspellWontspell · 26/10/2019 11:55

Terminator has a reasonable graphic sex scene so no.

PocketMoneyMonster · 26/10/2019 11:56

Terminator, Sister Act, Grease, Deep Impact are all fine are they not? Jaws probably too - I used to hide behind the sofa when the music came on but I was younger than 8 I think.

I realise reading threads on here that my TV/film viewing really wasn't particularly restricted, though I didn't really watch anything violent.

There was a thread about Dirty Dancing on here the other day. I was definitely under 8 when I saw that and loved it. I didn't understand the references to abortions and was just interested in looking at the silver shoes. Oh, how I wanted a pair of dance shoes...

I wouldn't watch Titanic.

IceniSky · 26/10/2019 11:57

Isn't Deep Impact and end of the world movie? I wouldn't.

DD is 8 I December and likes -

Harry Potter
Casper
The Number 5 is alive movie
Flight of the Navigator
Hocus Pocus
Ella Enchanted
Home Alone Movies
Elf

She really wants to watch The Hobbit and LOTR but I'm not sure yet.

PocketMoneyMonster · 26/10/2019 12:00

I don't remember any shagging in Terminator. But I am talking about the super old one. Where metal man walks out of the flames under the tunnel... Haven't seen it for yeeeeears though. Maybe it was Terminator 2? 🤔

DCIRozHuntley · 26/10/2019 12:02

DD1 is 8 and hasn't seen any of those. However, kids films that have a more grown up feel have appealed, for example:

Mary Poppins Returns
High School Musical
Matilda
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Home Alone
Elf
Harry Potter (films 1-3, gets a bit dark after that imo)
The Muppets

Grease and Mamma Mia have good songs but lots of sexual references and The odd swear word. Terminator or Jaws would upset mine - depends on their sensitivity levels I guess. Titanic and Castaway are far too grown up imo.

PocketMoneyMonster · 26/10/2019 12:02

I also used to really like Batteries Not Included, Cocoon and Harry and the Hendersons.

PocketMoneyMonster · 26/10/2019 12:03

Indiana Jones?

PocketMoneyMonster · 26/10/2019 12:05

Crocodile Dundee
Hook

Lovemenorca · 26/10/2019 12:07

We can’t answer this. Depends entirely on your child.

Although for any 8 year old - avoid terminator And jaws FGS!

JellyMouldJnr · 26/10/2019 12:58

I can't imagine a child particularly enjoying titanic - it's pretty slow moving and depressing.
The horrible histories film is aimed at children and quite good. How about ET etc?

TeenPlusTwenties · 26/10/2019 13:03

It would have helped if you had out the film classification by each one.

There are loads of films with real people suitable for 8 yos that aren't 12 rated or higher.

  • We made a zoo
  • a Cinderella story
  • zoo keeper
  • greatest showman
  • the golden compass
  • high school musical
  • Charlie and the chocolate factory
FaithInfinity · 26/10/2019 13:04

Sister Act is probably okay, just explaining the concept of witness protection. I wouldn’t show Grease (although I watched it aged 8 that was the BBC edited version, the full version is a bit more graphic!). Jaws is a tricky one, watching now the special effects are quite funny and not scary to most kids! No way would I show Titanic til at least 12 due to the sex and death. Have a look at the common sense media website for reviews and guidelines.

Around this age my DD and nephews like Home Alone, Casper, Jurassic Park.

Winterdaysarehere · 26/10/2019 13:10

Ds 5 loves Jaws.. And all the Jurassic Park films.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 26/10/2019 13:15

I’d go for the National Treasure and Night at the Museum films. Certainly not Jaws. Probably not Grease. I e never seen Terminator myself so wouldn’t know. Castaway would be okay I think.

LBOCS2 · 26/10/2019 13:26

Look older, as well. Things like The Neverending Story, Flight of the Navigator, Willow, Princess Bride, Gremlins, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, etc etc.

Isitme13 · 26/10/2019 13:50

There are so many films, especially older ones, as pp have said.

The goonies
Short circuit
Et
Back to the future
Flight of the navigator
Never ending story
Labyrinth (not many real people though Grin)
Jumanji
Nanny McPhee
Splash
Cool runnings
The original Star Wars films (so 4,5 & 6), and maybe the prequels (bit boring though)
Spy kids (I think, can’t remember it fully)
The narnia films (maybe, my 7 year old wouldn’t cope; not sure of the ratings)

There really isn’t any need to go for films with inappropriate age ratings.

TeenPlusTwenties · 26/10/2019 14:21

Harry Potter films are best left in my opinion until after they have read the relevant book.

I've never understood the rush to push older films on kids 'oh the abortion bit will go over their head' etc. Why not watch a film they can enjoy and understand all of?
