Sanitary towels

(Tell me if there is a better place to post this - I know we get weirdo trolls posting about poo so we probably do about periods too, I just can't see a better section)

Can you recommend me a sanitary towel brand please?

I'm not ready to make the switch to reusable for a number of reasons, mainly that ive just come off the injections and am flooding heavily during periods at the moment.

I don't want to use Always any more, and I'd like a more environmentally friendly disposable if such a thing exists. Must be able to cope with HEAVY flow.

Suggestions please?

I’ve just got a reusable cup, another reluctant Always customer. I did try looking at some organic pads but 2.5 boxes of them paid for the cup.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 26/10/2019 08:58

First get yourself to the GP for tranexamic acid to reduce the flow. No other suggestions for towels as I use Always (what's wrong with them?)

Get period pants op. They are awesome! Life changing!! And so much better for the planet Smile

I use Bodyform. They feel less plasticky to me.

shemakesmewaitonabedofnails · 26/10/2019 09:05

@ilovetofu how do they work? I'd love to try them but do you wear a pair the whole day? And stick in the washing machine? Do the pale ones stain?

Elodie2019 · 26/10/2019 09:21

I buy Sainsbury's/Asda/Boots/Home bargains own brand version of Tena pads for my periods!

No micro beads, no perfume.

Very comfortable & all have been better than any sanitary pad out there.

WomensRightsAreContraversial · 26/10/2019 09:30

I'm also interested in how the knickers work! I have visions of needing to change them a couple of times a day, which means carrying around bloody underwear in my bag Confused

I have a menstrual cup but can't bring myself to try it Blush I don't really like tampons, so what possessed me to think I'd want to shove a plastic cup up there instead.. Blush

And thanks for the suggestion Jigsaws but threw rain I came off inje tons was to try to have less pharmaceuticals in my system. I will consider that if they don't calm down but in think it's just my body recalibrating the first few cycles. Smile I hope so, anyway Grin

If you are flooding please get a blood test to make sure you are not anemic. It’s a vicious cycle - the floods can make you anemic, which leads to more flooding and more anemia as the anemia stops the clotting.

kitk · 26/10/2019 09:40

I second the pants! One pair usually lasts me about six hours

ButterflyBitch · 26/10/2019 09:46

I take tranexamic acid (not sure of spelling) it’s been great for helping to reduce my flow to manageable amounts. I use bodyform night time towels and tampons still. But I’m not flooding through everything! I’m looking in to reuseable sanitary protection at the moment so can’t help you with that. Be interested to hear any recommendations.

RunsForGummyBears · 26/10/2019 09:47

Get yourself to the PACII channel on you tube - there are a ton of videos on using mensural cups and it may give you the courage to give it a go.

Before my flow reduced from using a menstural cup I used incontinence pads for night time as I would flood everywhere. They were the only things that kept me from staining everything. Even the night time pads weren't absorbent or long enough.

NannyR · 26/10/2019 09:47

I know that you said you didn't want to switch to reusables just yet, but just wanted to say that I find cloth pads much more comfortable and reliable for heavy bleeding than disposables. I use the imse vimse long night time pads, they are long enough to prevent leaks and they are not bulky. I've been using them for years and never had any leaks.

RogueV · 26/10/2019 09:52

Bodyform

Kotex are more cottony than other brands, and thick but never seen any with wings. I have the same problem with periods. The only ones I've found that are sufficient enough are the Always nighttime, but I know you don't want them. I think Boots do their own version of them though but not as thick.

LimaOscarLima · 26/10/2019 10:56

I recently switched to period pants and they're amazing, I use the cheeky wipes ones as the absorbent area is all the way from the top of the front to the top of the back whereas others I looked at online were only absorbent where a pad would go iyswim, they're also a lot cheaper than other brands.
And if you're worried about them not lasting a full day maybe wear a pad on top of the period pants and once that's full you can dispose of it then just bleed into the period pants?
I used Always before period pants so can't really suggest any brands but what about maternity pads?

ilovetofu · 26/10/2019 11:47

@shemakesmewaitonabedofnails I have black ones. Wear them then rinse them out & wash in machine. I've worn all day then a different air at night. They are SOOOOOOO comfy! Couldn't quite believe they would work at first & had to buy a few pairs. But honestly for me they have been life changing. I can't get my head round moon cups.

ilovetofu · 26/10/2019 11:48

@Elodie2019 god I HATE the perfume!!! 🤮

EmpressLesbianInChair · 26/10/2019 12:08

I use Always (what's wrong with them?)

They spent years dismissing / ignoring women who told them their scented pads stank and caused thrush. Then a woman who identifies as male objected to the woman symbol on the packaging & they changed that instantly.

Also see #MyAlwaysExperience on Twitter.

I used to buy from Cheeky Wipes. But they’ve bought into the ‘men have periods too’ thing so not any more. A friend recommended www.etsy.com/uk/shop/RagHagShop so that’s where I’m going next time I need new reusables.

(Sorry for derail)

Layoverlife · 26/10/2019 12:12

Kotex night time ones ( Black Packet ) are the only ones I've ever used day or night,
Never had an accident with them and very comfortable

DippyAvocado · 26/10/2019 12:17

Honestly, I just tried some reusable ones for the first time on my last period and they were way more absorbent than regular sanitary towels. Mine were kind of fleecy. I was pleasantly surprised. I bought them for environmental reasons but they were actually better on a practical level too.

Nat6999 · 26/10/2019 12:23

Tena pull ups in blue pack would be ideal for heavy periods, if they can cope with my losing a full bladder without leaking, they will cope with anything.

Likethebattle · 26/10/2019 12:36

Bodyform night are really long and comfy with wings. I have a weird problem where the blood comeuppance really high at the front of my underwear (seeping) so I turn the pad backwards.

which1 · 26/10/2019 12:38

I don't know which ones you dont like in the Always range, but I've been hugely impressed by the Infinity line.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 26/10/2019 12:53

@EmpressLesbianInChair thank you! I must have missed that Shock
