How can I stop my toes from nearly falling off?

Same problem every year but today was the 1st day of the autumn the problem returned. I spend a lot of time outdoors watching my children play sport. Doesn't matter what I wear on my feet or how many pairs of socks I have on, my toes are always frozen solid. And then they get so painful. I just have poor circulation to them.

Any recommendations for boots or shoes? I can't do another winter of this 🥶

Wool socks every time and good walking boots with insoles so they are insulated from the cold. Take a hot drink with you to keep rest of the body warm and that will help as well.

thetardis · 25/10/2019 18:32

silk inner socks. wool (pref alpaca) loose knit outer socks. insulated snow boots. bear in mind snow boots aren't designed to be waterproof (snow isn't liquid) so for mud get the type with a wellie-like bottom.

Sockworkshop · 25/10/2019 18:34

Lidl have got wool insoles in atm-I ve got them in all my winter boots
£1.49 for 2 pairs.
Super warm

Your winter boots need to be slightly bigger than usual shoes so that your double socking still leaves a slight air gap between outer sock and boot. It's the AIR that keeps you warm.

So silk, thermal or bamboo inner sock, snug fit, then thermal or wool sock, lose fit, the boot. Guaranteed you'll have warm feet :)

I have never seen them in the UK, but in the continent they have leather boots with fur inside, or sheepskins. It gets to -20 in Northern Europe, you need them or your toes fall off. See if you can get hold of a pair?

BritishIslesNotUKorROI · 25/10/2019 18:43

www.muckbootcompany.com

These things are the best. The only things to keep feet warm on a concrete yard 5am in the snow doing horses. Never found anything else like them

Twospaniels · 25/10/2019 18:43

Decent wellies. I am outdoors a lot and have Le Chemeau with neoprene lining. Never had cold feet. They do leather lined ones too. Expensive but very well worth the money.

eddiemairswife · 25/10/2019 18:47

This used to be a real worry of mine when I was about 6 or 7. I had read about people with frostbite losing their toes, and my feet would get so cold waiting for the bus in the morning that my toes were numb. I would spend the first two lessons trying to wiggle them, and was scared to change into indoor shoes in case my toes were rolling around in the bottom of my sock.

TheLidoOfThighs · 25/10/2019 18:49

If you are already that cold, then google heated socks. They exist!

Elieza · 25/10/2019 18:56

You can buy battery powered heated socks. No clue if any good. Not sure I’d trust them but then again it may be worth a try.

britnay · 25/10/2019 18:58

second muckboots! They are cosy :D

snaxinyourslacks · 25/10/2019 19:00

Today at Mountain Warehouse I saw foot warmers. You know those gel filled heated hand warmers? Like that but for feet, not sure whereabouts you put them in your socks though.

Speak to your gp about being tested for rheynods and or sticky blood.
I have to take aspirin every day in the winter otherwise I get chillblanes (sp)

oreosoreosoreos · 25/10/2019 19:13

Sorrel Caribou boots - I wore them in Iceland (with thicker socks) and my feet stayed toasty!!

The only bad reviews of them are people complaining their feet got too hot - but as someone with bad circulation this has never been an issue for me.

I wish I'd know about them all the years I spent stood freezing cold watching DSS train and play football!

thetardis · 25/10/2019 19:22

keeping your circulation going is important too, op. the reason you freeze while they play is because they're moving to keep warm. can you march around the touchline or do starjumps in the interim? :D

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 25/10/2019 19:26

Great thread.

I have the same issue OP.

Shosha1 · 25/10/2019 19:35

My DDIL spends hours watching sport or walking dogs. I make all her socks. Pure Merino. She swears by them

Branster · 25/10/2019 19:43

Wool socks (real wool not mixed fibers) over cotton socks. The wool shouldn’t be tight on your foot just snug and comfortable. Walking boots one size bigger. The neoprene ones are very, very good. Keep moving.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 25/10/2019 19:43

Ginkgo biloba daily supplement? It helps me and my circulation is amazingly slow, I've always had hands and feet like ice but since I've been taking GB my icy feet don't happen.

Genny120 · 25/10/2019 19:45

Omg same, I love winter but I can’t cope with icey toes. I used to wear loads of pairs of socks until I was told this actually makes it worse and it cuts off circulation. Following for tips Grin

hippoherostandinghere · 25/10/2019 20:07

Sorry I was out freezing my toes off at football Smile
Some great ideas here. So I need wool socks. I'm going to google boots now. If anyone has any links to warm boots that work I'd love to see them.

You can get heated socks?! That's genius!! Those foot warmers look amazing too.

Yes I tried to keep moving this morning as standing in one place on cold ground doesn't help. Thanks everyone.

Jigsaws I never thought of a supplement. Must give it a try, thanks.

I have terrible circulation- end up with painful and frozen fingers and toes no matter how much I layer up. Uggs are the only things that have helped my feet. My fingers need an equivalent.

MissRainbowBrite · 25/10/2019 20:44

If you need wellies on a muddy pitch then neoprene are the only way to go. I have Aigle wellies and they are awesome. Only ever needed one pair of socks even when worn in snow and never once had cold feet. You'll be a complete convert once you've tried them.
Once you figure your size out Amazon quite often have them for a reasonable price too.

CherryPlum · 25/10/2019 20:48

Smartwool socks are the best, I get them from Amazon
