How can I stop my toes from nearly falling off?

Same problem every year but today was the 1st day of the autumn the problem returned. I spend a lot of time outdoors watching my children play sport. Doesn't matter what I wear on my feet or how many pairs of socks I have on, my toes are always frozen solid. And then they get so painful. I just have poor circulation to them.

Any recommendations for boots or shoes? I can't do another winter of this 🥶

It’s tempting to wear really thick socks but this causes two problems; the first is that usually makes things tight so you can’t wiggle your toes so that reduces the circulation and the second is that thick socks in a synthetic fibre will make your feet sweat, then the sweat cools and contributes to your cold feet.

So, medium weight, wool (merino is good) socks inside a well fitting, lined, leather/breathable boot. Nice merino ski or walking socks are a good start.

I also suffer from chilblains in my toes and raynauds in my fingers- annoying as the rest of me is always too warm! My podiatrist recommended Nelson chilblain cream, looking on amazon there seems to be a few that are similar.

3 prs of socks in lined boots with thick soles, and walk around don't just stand still.

Another recommendation for Sorel boots. I bought some just after I had DS1, so approaching 10 years old now. I wear them every winter when it's below 10°C (I get cold!). They're absolutely worth the cost and evidently last years and years!

Sorel boots link - PPs have already pointed out the need to have plenty of space particularly around the toes. If shoes are tight the pressure will accelerate the vasoconstriction. I have wide forefeet as it is, but my Sorel boots are roomy and fluffy and wonderful.

I'd also recommend looking into heated socks - I have a heated hoody and it's total bliss!

It's worth making sure the rest of you, ie your core is also warm and dry. Consider investing in a warm down/synthetic fill AND WATERPROOF coat (again, got my good one around 10 years ago and with care it's still waterproof and toasty warm! You're looking for a proper mountain coat, ideally!)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/10/2019 21:37

Make sure you keep your core warm too. Blood is rushing to the middle to keep your organs warm and leaving the toes to fend for themselves.

Sohololopopo · 25/10/2019 21:38

Mucking our/ riding boots - leather. Or... uggs.

FreeButtonBee · 25/10/2019 21:40

Another 👍 for sorel boots. In a size up. I don’t have to be too fussy about socks but M&S thermal ones are pretty good although not wool. If I needed some new socks then I’d go for smart wool as all their other stuff I have is VG

iheartspiders · 25/10/2019 21:41

You won't need special socks in Sorel boots! I've never had cold feet in Sorels (and I have Raynaud's and can get hypothermic in the summer if I try hard enough!)

I've convinced myself. I'm getting mine out tomorrow.

I have these

FreeButtonBee · 25/10/2019 21:43

@iheartspiders I’ve had mine for a couple of weeks (plus also my enormous down coat). Fuck being cold.

Wallywobbles · 25/10/2019 21:45

Proper wool (or fur - rabbit normally) innersoles make a massive difference.

Buttybach · 25/10/2019 21:46

I have these compression sock things that expose the toes but improve foot circulation. Last winter I had an endometrioma that was huge and sat on a leg nerve. I then put socks on top

iheartspiders · 25/10/2019 21:49

@FreeButtonBee "fuck being cold" was how I ended up with my Sorel boots and Arc'teryx waterproof down jacket. I love them so much and am so very pleased they've lasted so long. I might get 15 years out of both at this rate!

Decided I need some short ankle boots/trainer type things from Sorel too. For when massive snow boots are a tad OTT (which is never, of course)

iheartspiders · 25/10/2019 21:55

Also, "fuck being cold" high-fives all round

FourNaanJeremy · 25/10/2019 22:04

I get this too. The only shoes I’ve found that keep my feet warm are Dr Martens, I wear tights and socks with them

titnomatani · 26/10/2019 00:10

Sorrel boots- so tempting but more fugly than my Uggs! I don't think I can do it 🙈🙈🙈

Hope the link works but I hope even more that someone comes up with a high street version with a high street price.
Great idea but £1095 is way over my budget Shock

SinglePringle · 26/10/2019 05:58

Neoprene wellies for cold and muddy. Whether they be Le Chemeau, Muck Boots or Sorel, they are the only thing that keeps your feet insulated and dry.

Muck boots are my brand of choice - and the decent tread means less likely to slip on the wet mud.

Agree with the two sock thing - one thin (I’ve got silk thermal from Lakeland) and one thick (pure wool or cashmere).

hippoherostandinghere · 26/10/2019 15:49

I'm on the look out now for some good wool socks. Was frozen again this morning and this is just the start of it. The temperature has dropped considerably where we put.

I'm not sure if I can stretch to Sorels at this moment in time. Maybe for Christmas.

Have a look at bogs boots. My kids have them, keep your feet warm down to -10

oreosoreosoreos · 26/10/2019 18:49

I got my Sorels last year in a Black Friday deal - can't remember where now, but paid about £115 for them. If you can hold out till then you could get them at a good price!

Blobbyweeble · 26/10/2019 18:55

I know this sounds weird but in winter I cover my feet in a thick layer of Vaseline before I put my socks and work boots on. My feet stay really warm and as a bonus I have really smooth skin on my feet. It has to be a really thick layer. I guess it must act as an insulator.

Undercoverdetective · 26/10/2019 18:59

Thermal insoles, the ones that look like aluminium. Stops the cold coming up.

Branleuse · 26/10/2019 19:01

I have thermal insulated walking boots for the coldest months. Have you got some?
Also woolen socks

Magstermay · 26/10/2019 23:19

Has anyone tried Warm Wellies? Wondering why they are so cheap compared to other brands mentioned!
