What's your stance on instructional sign in the loo at work?

Things like PLEASE clean up after yourself, make sure you flush, leave this loo as you found it.

One's gone up in our loos today about checking after you've flushed to make sure all the poo has gone.

I've taken it down. I'd like to think no one's doing it deliberately, they're flushing and going back to work without waiting to check. Plus if you need telling about all these behaviour things, a sign isn't going to make a difference and it looks awful to any visitors or interviewees who may use the loo while there.

Am I right or are you one of those who puts these signs up? Why? Do you expect it to make a difference? Does It?

I feel the same way about the ones about cleaning cups in the staff room. Yes, it would be lovely if everyone did but a sign isn't going to change selfish behaviour and it's like being nagged everytime you go in there even if you're not guilty. Plus it makes the place look really unfriendly.

I hate all those notices too.....

including the ones about washing your hands, switching lights off, switching your computer off, being careful when walking on wet floors during inclement weather....

AtrociousCircumstance · 25/10/2019 17:41

It’s fine to take the sign down - if you’re the person cleaning the toilets.

Otherwise, leave it there.

Ohyesiam · 25/10/2019 17:43

I hate those signs.
They have given me a lifelong aversion to the phrase
“Sanitary bins provided”

Why atrocious? It wasn't put up by the cleaners and I'm responsible for the appearance of the building.

and it looks awful to any visitors or interviewees who may use the loo while there.

Not as awful as shit or blood though, aye?

LoyaltyBonus · 25/10/2019 17:46

It's really not that bad Worra. It's the occasional floater, in the toilet, where it belongs

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/10/2019 17:46

Find. If it's the "please leave the toilet as you would wish to find it" sign but the "cleaning fairys day off" ones make me stabby ( because i.m a bloody adult)

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 25/10/2019 17:49

Oh YANBU, they are annoying! Plus the spelling is invariable awful.

I once worked somewhere that had a jokey sign in the loo saying something along the lines of ladies don’t forget to wipe the seat, and gentlemen stand a bit closer, it’s not as long as you think Envy

WorraLiberty · 25/10/2019 17:50

Oh in that case you're right to take it down imo.

Can you find out who put it up and have a word with them?

DaveMyHat · 25/10/2019 17:52

I've only ever seen proper signs like "please remember to wash your hands." "Don't flush sanitary towels" etc that have been put up by the company themselves, and once a handwritten note in a work toilet from the cleaners after someone had apparently left it in a shockingly bad state. Neither of which bother me - though I did feel annoyed on behalf of the cleaners that things had been left so badly that they'd had to leave to note.

I actually quite like seeing the "remember to wash your hands" signs up in restaurants. I'm sure there are people who need reminding.

I can't imagine seeing a sign about checking for bits of poo left behind though! How was that actually worded?

tigger1001 · 25/10/2019 17:57

We don't have these signs up at work, but sadly they are needed. People leave the toilet in a disgusting state on a semi regular basis. And don't bother refilling the toilet roll etc....

Only today the whole corridor was stinking after someone visited the toilet.... and that's the toilet clients would use, so not a good look (or smell for that matter 😂) for the company

LolaSmiles · 25/10/2019 18:03

I don't mind reminders not to flush sanitary products.

I hate, hate, hate the twee ones (often in poetry form Angry) reminding people about cleaning fairies, number ones number twos etc.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 25/10/2019 18:03

Well to be honest at my workplace people leave without washing their hands and leave poo and blood behind them, bits of toilet paper on the floor, etc. The signs (and I have never put one up) are a way of saying "we see you, you manky mare". I wonder if they do it at home, too?

reginafelangee · 25/10/2019 18:08

All new signs in our office have to be approved by the Comms team.

That's how we stop these things going up.

They were everywhere before we brought that rule in.

elephantoverthehill · 25/10/2019 18:08

We have photos of SLT beaming down on us telling us how to report safeguarding issues. It's a little of putting.

elephantoverthehill · 25/10/2019 18:09

*off

AtrociousCircumstance · 25/10/2019 18:11

Hey OP - just because if that sign makes the cleaner’s life even slightly easier then it’s worth having it there.

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 25/10/2019 18:12

Sogn wouldn't be needed if people weren't mingers- grim the state people leave kitchen and toilets in at work. Bet their homes are spotless though!

Solongtoshort · 25/10/2019 18:13

Sadly we need them in my work place but we had a memo saying we can not have any notes up that are hand written in toilets or staff area. Some smart arse printed one and everyone got the “can we have a little chat about the note left I the toilets” chat with the hr lady (clearly a slow day).

Sadly though it is needed, l feel sorry for the cleaner l am sure the job description isn’t clean up after lazy arsed people.

TheBeesKnee · 25/10/2019 18:15

Hate those signs, I don't believe they make a difference. My workplace is full of them, and the Facilities Manager (and Assistant!) send passive aggressive emails and put up even more signs. I don't think the people smearing poo, blood and piss around the toilet do it by accident and clearly those signs are doing nothing to prevent the dirty bastard/s from their grim habits.

ForalltheSaints · 25/10/2019 18:21

Sadly some people think they can behave differently at work. I remember one place where it said 'your mother doesn't work here, please clean up after yourself'.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 25/10/2019 18:43

I can sort of see manky folk who leave floaters or mess on the toilet itself, but whoever is it who goes around smearing poo and blood up the walls? That doesn't happen by accident - it must be done deliberately by people who somehow think it's a good idea or a nice thing to do. How do these people hold down jobs? They must have some kind of illness, mustn't they?

Brackish · 25/10/2019 18:48

Every year we have to do it temporarily, after a summer of ESOL pre-sessional overseas students initially used to different types of toilet, who squat on top of the loo, with predictable consequences -- and large grubby footprints on the seat. It's tactfully adverted to in some of their early settling-in sessions, but there always seem to be a few people who don't catch on immediately.

LolaSmiles · 25/10/2019 18:51

brackish
That takes me back to university where there were signs saying not to stand on the toilet.

AntCrawley · 25/10/2019 19:18

I dont think thats because they are foreigners..more like because theyre germophobes. The people who openly said they do this at uni were english.
