What's your stance on instructional sign in the loo at work?

Things like PLEASE clean up after yourself, make sure you flush, leave this loo as you found it.

One's gone up in our loos today about checking after you've flushed to make sure all the poo has gone.

I've taken it down. I'd like to think no one's doing it deliberately, they're flushing and going back to work without waiting to check. Plus if you need telling about all these behaviour things, a sign isn't going to make a difference and it looks awful to any visitors or interviewees who may use the loo while there.

Am I right or are you one of those who puts these signs up? Why? Do you expect it to make a difference? Does It?

I feel the same way about the ones about cleaning cups in the staff room. Yes, it would be lovely if everyone did but a sign isn't going to change selfish behaviour and it's like being nagged everytime you go in there even if you're not guilty. Plus it makes the place look really unfriendly.

Is it usual to check for floaters? I flush, assume it's all gone and go wash my hands. I don't wait to look down the toilet once it's stopped flushing so maybe I am one of the offenders.

I hate shit like this.

I feel like I am trapped in some kind of Orwellian nightmare whenever I'm at the station. All these fucking pointless announcements about remembering your bags or not slipping when it's wet or using the lift with your suitcase.

Just SHUT UP! Just talk when you need to.

I regularly take signs down in my building. It makes me happy.

Well, if they’re germophobes, they seem to appear only (at least to an extent that is noticeable) at the time the ESOL pre-sessional students arrive, and are not in evidence during the general academic year...?

Brackish · 25/10/2019 21:14

Sorry, that was to @AntCrawley.

trilbydoll · 25/10/2019 21:17

Based on our toilets at work these signs do actually make a difference, like people think the signs are watching them or something.

Erm...

elessar · 25/10/2019 21:20

@LoyaltyBonus err yes it is normal to check the toilet is clean after you've flushed.

I think it's disgusting and antisocial not to, particularly at work.

So yes, signs sadly are needed, and yes, you probably are one of the culprits.

Confuseddotcotton · 25/10/2019 21:22

I worked in an office once where the male toilet door had a large sign that said ‘please urinate in the bowl not on the floor’, on the outside,

The loos were next to the entrance door so every employee and visitor to the office saw the sign. No one thought it inappropriate and the sign stayed up for years!

Kaddm · 25/10/2019 21:22

I think it would be OK to put something like, "Please check the loo after flushing to make sure it's clean"

as opposed to "make sure your poo flushed"

icantfind · 25/10/2019 21:32

We have loads of signs popping up in our office. If they’ve made a difference I hate to think how bad it was before. People leave the toilets in a horrific state. Wee on the seats, toilet roll all over, skid marks, I flushed toilets. And the number of people who don’t wash their hands is grim.

Passthecherrycoke · 25/10/2019 21:33

I once worked somewhere where someone put up “ladies! Be a lady and clear up after yourself!”
So I complained

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 25/10/2019 21:36

We have photos of SLT beaming down on us telling us how to report safeguarding issues. It's a little of putting.

Ha, like a 'these are the DSP and deputies for child protection' way? We have pics of ours everywhere, but not in the bogs, that would make me uncomfortable! Grin

Northernsoullover · 25/10/2019 21:36

There are signs in my university demonstrating how one should sit not stand on the seat.

northernknickers · 26/10/2019 21:25

Yes, @LoyaltyBonus it is quite normal (indeed, social graces would, for most of us, dictate essential!) to check that the toilet is clean before you left it!! Nobody wants to walk into your 'floater' thank you!

(I can't actually believe it's necessary to spell this out to an adult!)

BrokenWing · 26/10/2019 21:59

It is usual to wait and check all is clear. I hit the flush as soon as I stand then sort my clothes and have a quick look before leaving the cubicle. There is never a mess as I never poo at work but it's just considerate in a shared toilet.

The facilities manager at our work had the painful job of raising the issue with the state toilets are left in at our annual H&S sessions, it was a last ditch attempt after many signs and emails. It was straight talking, awkward but also delivered with a laugh, some grim photos and requests. The women's toilets were highlighted as the biggest problem, it only takes one of two people being inconsiderate. Unfortunately it still hasn't improved.

I've been to an office that had an amazing sign up in the loo. It was one of those big lips that doubles as a disabled loo and is also unisex. Family owned & run firm & everyone knew everyone (about 8 regulars in the office). There were also offices rented out to other businesses in the building who would often use this loo.

The business owner put up a long, detailed, explicit sign about poo in the loo. It basically said that she had CCTV in the corridor & if the loo wasn't poo free in future she would watch the tape feed (live). See who went in the loo. Then inspect the loo. Etc etc

Amazing note.

I used to work for the NHS in an office building than housed around 200 people, mainly women.
Sadly, those types of notices were definitely needed. Some peoples behaviour was atrocious.
