Adult Advent Calenders

I'm being bombarded with emails about beauty advent calenders and gin advent calendars ( so over gin right now )
Who spends £85 on advent calendars for themselves?
Aren't they a little self indulgent?

I was given a Marks and Spencer one and graciously accepted but to be honest cringed inside.
Then I started it and honestly loved it! A little bit of joy every day when I rarely have any treats or surprises. Try it! Bring joy to your life!

mbosnz · 25/10/2019 12:08

Very! Grin If you really want to have conniptions, go check out the Fortnum Mason ones, etc.

DH has bought one for me, bless 'em. NOT the Fortnum Mason one, lol.

Now I'm going to find one for him - or make it!

I do the girls' one each too, I have fun finding the little presents for them.

But we're Christmas nutters.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/10/2019 12:10

If you can afford it, I don't see the issue. Plenty of people will spend £85 on themselves on all manner of things that aren't strictly necessary in a shorter period of time than the 24 days that an advent calendar lasts for.

They can also be a good way of trying different beauty products, gin etc.

I had a gin advent calendar from Costco last year. It cost £60 for 24 x 50 cl minatures in the advent calendar format, so equivalent to just under two full bottles of gin, so not terrible value considering that many of them were of the small batch, artisan type that's £30+ a bottle anyway.

It's just a bit of fun, but they are a bit expensive for what they are, especially as I don't really see anything 'extra' about expensive gin compared to cheaper ones, and one of my favourite ones is actually £16 a bottle in Lidl, so I'll probably just save my money in future and buy normal size bottles of gin.

Oh, my!

Actually, what I would quite like is a nice wooden refillable advent calendar, that I can put little treats in for the days of December. Does it matter that I'm 46 and child free.

SpiderCharlotte · 25/10/2019 12:20

When you said 'Adult' I wasn't quite sure what you meant OP. Have to say, I'm a little relieved.

Themazeoflife · 25/10/2019 12:22

I bought my myself a Smiggle one last year, loved it, DC don't share my love of stationery.

CMOTDibbler · 25/10/2019 12:27

I've bought myself the M&S one the last couple of years and had the Boots one before that. I've loved it, and as I only get a present from DH at Christmas it gives me some surprises and things I'll use all year and get pleasure from. Ds gets a nice advent calendar too for much the same reason, though MIL does get him something. Last year he chose a Yankee candle one

OverByYer · 25/10/2019 12:31

@SpiderCharlotte I'm sure someone, somewhere...

@CMOTDibbler that makes sense

A Good Gifts charity advent calendar. No tat and puts Xmas into perspective a little bit.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 25/10/2019 12:35

What’s wrong with being self indulgent? Life’s for living, if someone wants to indulge and buy one why the hell not 🤷🏻‍♀️ Me and many other people probably buy many things you’d describe as indulgent but one day I’ll be dead and the money can’t come with me.

I had an adult advent calendar last year, a little bit of joy each day. I’ll be having one this year too as will DH, the dc have calendars so why can’t we.

If you really want to be shocked google the tiffany advent calendar, you’ll need a sit down after seeing the price.......

mbosnz · 25/10/2019 12:36

Do it! I got two wooden ones from Hobbycraft and painted them and decoupaged the drawers, and it was so much fun! Rather than putting the treats in the drawers, I hid clues as to where the little treat might be. . .

OverByYer · 25/10/2019 12:38

@P1nkHeartLovesCake I just did. But this came up instead and now I want it https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/Beauty-Advent-Calendar-2019-R303511006.html?dwvar0006370655color=98-NO%20COLOUR&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9422Ki35QIVAVXTCh14rwPFEAQYASABEgIJnvDDBwE

@SpiderCharlotte I’ve heard lovehoney do the type of calendar you may be referring too Wink

forkfun · 25/10/2019 12:39

I agree, it's stupid. My mum still sends me every year a paper one with pictures. I love it. No need for overpackaged crap every day to feel happy.

elliejjtiny · 25/10/2019 12:41

I love advent calendars although I think some get more OTT and expensive every year. I wanted to get dh a forrero roche one last year but they were so expensive I ended up getting him a normal box of 24 and some sticky dots and made my own! I usually get the malteasers one.

Tableclothing · 25/10/2019 12:41

When you said 'Adult' I wasn't quite sure what you meant OP.

In case anyone else is wondering, yes, well-known purveyors of adult 'items' are indeed stocking advent calendars.

When I search for "erotic advent calendar" the second hit I get is for Whittard's Hot Chocolate calendar, so I guess Google algorithms know me too well. Off to look at F&M for a bit of a solitary thrill...

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 25/10/2019 12:41

Well here it is at £104,000

Thanks for that - we'll get one of these for each member of the family as well. Brilliant!

Breathlessness · 25/10/2019 12:42

I bought myself the Harrods one last year. It was lovely.

OverByYer · 25/10/2019 12:47

@elliejjtiny and @Tableclothing mine would probably bring up a trainers calendar

Damntheman · 25/10/2019 12:48

My sister makes me a tea calendar with a teabag from all the places she toured in that year. I love it! She's the sweetest and my evening advent tea makes me so happy

mbosnz · 25/10/2019 12:49

£104,000.

I need a cup of tea and a lie down.

Or possibly that gin advent calendar someone was talking about. . .

Ravenrob · 25/10/2019 12:50

A member of my family has been making himself a beer advent calendar for years but now it actually seems to be a thing.
I wouldn't want to spend more than maybe £20 on an advent calendar.

OverByYer · 25/10/2019 12:55

@Damntheman that is lovely
