I have a mixer and food processor. Saved up for them both, coveted then for years but use them for bugger all!

I hear people say they use theirs all the time but for WHAT?

Please tell me the last thing you used your fancy pants mixer for

Oh yes, baking too, but DH does more of the sweet stuff than I do.

RockinHippy · 25/10/2019 07:57

Cakes, biscuits, bread, pizza dough, pastry in the mixer

Soups, sauces, smoothie && shakes in the blender

I don't have one (first world problem) but if I did these are the things I would have used it for recently:

Making 4 Madeira cakes and a batch of buttercream last night
Making 100s of cupcakes for the PTA
Ditto biscuits
Making my Christmas cake
Icing for the 'spare' Christmas cake I made for dh'd birthday

Chopping veg for bases (I like to chop onion, celery, carrot and freeze)
Chopping sprouts for a sprout and bacon side dish

To be honest, I would use mine far more regularly than I use say, my toaster. Or kettle. Or virtually any of my other cookware or gadgets. I would love one!!

cathpinc · 25/10/2019 08:55

processor: chopped a bag of spinach, grated breadcrumbs, shredded cheese, chopped onions, then mulched it all together for 'green burgers' that used to take me ages in a tiny chopper

mixer: whisked up a can of evaporated milk with half-set jelly to recreate Mum's 1980s kids' party pudding of choice; made Waitrose's disappointing October pear/almond/cinnamon loaf recipe card.

We use our bread maker way more than I expected. I think most kitchen gadgets' usage boils down to whether you can shove the components in the dishwasher or not. I spent more time cleaning the juicer than I ever did drinking the juice.

Damntheman · 25/10/2019 11:22

Bread, biscuits, cake, any kind of baking, occasionally mixing that I don't want to have to hand whisk ;) beating cream, beating egg whites, my god it's such a time saver! I also have a grating attachment so I can use it to grate veges and cheese really fast. I love it.

Husband has started taking it over lately though to bake bread rolls and muffins and uses the processor part to make hummous.

PlaymobilPirate · 25/10/2019 18:10

Right... I'm going to make biscuits this weekend! I actually have a Mary Berry book somewhere so I have no excuse.

The grating etc... I think I must do something wrong as I tried grating cheese and carrots when I first got it and loads got stuck in the seal bit at the top!

I need to take both on a weekend retreat to be taught to use them I think!

Once a year for Christmas cake

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/10/2019 18:18

do have a George Foreman type grill and a slow cooker gaining dust though
The George Foreman grill is great for toasted sandwiches but I don't use mine for much else these days. I use my slow cooker a lot for soup, casserole, curry etc I have two sizes and use them a lot especially in winter.

I use my kitchen aid frequently for bread, cakes, Yorkshire pudding, pastry. I also have the grating and slicing attachment which I use for stir fry vegetables and coleslaw. I use my stick blender for soup.

NotMeNoNo · 25/10/2019 18:18

Making some muffins to take into work. I only use it once or twice a month but my cakes are leaden without it. I'll make pastry for Christmas mince pies too as we get through a lot.

AnnaNimmity · 25/10/2019 18:20

Dd1 baked red velvet cake with dd4 this week while I was at work. I made apple pie last Sunday. I made a banana bread the weekend before. I'm making Christmas cake this weekend. I bought my kitchen aid as a housewarming present for myself in last house and use it all the time.

We'll be making mince pies most weekends now. Plus food gifts for teachers, all the christmas baking and bread from time to time. I have a kitchen aid and love it

I don't have fancy pants blender. My last one gave up the ghost and now If I need to blend, I use either hand held stick thing or the nutri bullet.

30to50FeralHogs · 25/10/2019 18:23

I use my handheld mixer for most things as the stand mixer doesn't have a very big bowl. However, its good for making swiss meringue buttercream, where you have to whisk the egg whites for like 20 minutes, which would be a proper ball ache by hand. I use my processor for grating lots of cheese, carrots etc or for making pastry when I can't be arsed to get flour all over my hands. I often think about selling/getting rid of the stand mixer, but then it can be useful when I have a lot of cakes to make for birthdays etc so I can be making the cake mix by hand and the butter icing in the mixer.

AHobbyaweek · 25/10/2019 18:42

In my kenwood chef mixer his week: two batches of sugar cookies and royal icing for my daughters birthday party and nursery batch.
Dumplings for the top of a stew
Boa bun dough for dinner one day
Stuffing and sausage meat mix (I was being lazy!)

I use it a lot and had it for over 7 years!!
My mums old one was going for 26ish years and was used regularly and still works.

Smellybluecheese · 25/10/2019 19:43

Used the mixer yesterday to make some
biscuits. The processor gets used most days - most recently to make breadcrumbs I think.

luckygreeneyes · 25/10/2019 19:46

Last things I used kitchen aid for- mashed potatoes and meringue

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/10/2019 19:52

Do you use the beater for mashed potatoes? Doesn't that make them too soggy and do you have to reheat them?

ExpletiveDEVILighted · 25/10/2019 19:53

PirateWeasel - I thought I didn't have enough space for years, then I discovered the Kenwood Prospero which is a compact stand mixer with food processor and blender attachments. Mine goes in a corner under cupboards but I have to pull it forward to use the blender or FP. You need some cupboard space to store the attachments too, I keep most of mine behind my cereal bowls in a high cupboard but the FP bowl needs space of its own somewhere. I cannot imagine not having it now.

luckygreeneyes · 25/10/2019 19:56

@CaptainMyCaptain yep I do, especially great for big quantities. I add hot milk so doesn’t make them cold

BestIsWest · 25/10/2019 19:58

Brownies for a cake sale at work last week. DH is the baker in our house and makes something with it every week.

BestIsWest · 25/10/2019 19:59

Never use the processor though have got a hand held baumix thing.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/10/2019 20:04

I'll try that luckygreeneyes. I once put mash in a food processor and it came out as a drippy puree. I don't eat mashed potato much but I do like a shepherd's pie.

redchocolatebutton · 25/10/2019 20:11

pancake batter
bread dough
hot chocolate in the blender bit
lassi type drinks (blend yoghurt or kefir with fruit)

youkiddingme · 25/10/2019 20:12

Last used the big mixer for a big batch of grain-free, yeast-free bread, you have to mix loads of psyllum husk gel in and it's a royal pain by hand.
Best thing I use it for is Nigella's chocolate olive oil cake (you can easily find it online) - it's written to be made in stand mixer (though I made it with hand mixer in past) and it's lush.
Use processor loads for nuts, breadcrumbs, soups, making veg rice, pastry.

redchocolatebutton · 25/10/2019 20:12

oh I forgot that I chop veg for cooking

Randomactofkindness · 25/10/2019 20:17

We make brownies in ours and a brilliant pizza dough too - saves the kneading!
