"Supper" for DCs

drspouse · 20/10/2019 23:17

DS has ADHD and is on meds that limit his appetite but he's suddenly started wanting to eat again just before bed!
What do you give your DCs for a pre-bed meal? He'd eat cereal or peanut butter on toast till the cows come home but preferably a bit more variety as he's not really eating enough in the day TBH and we might get some new foods in if he is really hungry.

I'd probably go for soup and toast. But if he's not eating during the day, couldn't you give him a (small) portion of main meal?

KeepYourCup · 21/10/2019 05:50

We usually have cereal or toast for supper.

What about porridge? You could add different fruit for some variety? Crackers and cheese or cheese spread?

Something "cozy" like a mug of warm soup might be nice too, I always find a warm drink comforting at night time so it might also help calm him a bit?

OhTheRoses · 21/10/2019 05:59

Just make extra at normal tea time and keep it back for him. But at this time of year soup and a toastie wd be good.

Good lad though. Presumably by bed time the effects of medication are wearing off.

A banana.

smemorata · 21/10/2019 06:17

We dont have supper so not entirely sure what you mean. Does he eat anything earlier?

Coldhandscoldheart · 21/10/2019 06:36

Mine are quite little, but I would give toast and butter or porridge. I usually keep things quite plain because I don’t want to encourage them and also teeth.

pippitysqueakity · 21/10/2019 07:30

OP explains quite clearly what she means smemorata, a meal before bedtime.
Agree with pp OP, maybe try to keep some of evening meal back to encourage trying to eat more? Though soup sounds good too!

ExitLightEnterNight · 21/10/2019 07:40

My ds has adhd too and we have the same issue. He is allowed to finish off his tea if it's something we can reheat and serve again. Failing that he can have fruit, toast, cereal or sandwiches.

iamabox · 21/10/2019 08:00

Supper here is either...toast and yoghurt, dippy eggs and toast, or a few biscuits and milk.

drspouse · 21/10/2019 08:10

I forgot yoghurt thanks!
Yes we think his meds wear off by 7 or so but he can be a bit oppositional about tea so bringing it back might not work well.
Soup will work too.
He might be persuaded to try crackers and cheese, he does like crackers at least!

OP posts:
spiderlight · 21/10/2019 09:13

Mine has a small bowl of cereal, a slice of toast, a banana (sometimes whizzed up with milk) or a couple of buttered crackers.

KeepYourCup · 21/10/2019 10:03

Primula might be a good shout, its fun to squeeze onto the crackers himself if that would help persuade him

luckygreeneyes · 21/10/2019 10:06

Beans on toast
Scrambled egg on toast
Porridge
Toast & banana
Yoghurt and banana
Cheese on toast
Crumpets
Pasta

I wouldn’t serve meat as I think it can be difficult to digest late

drspouse · 21/10/2019 11:47

He doesn't like cheese spread but loads of other good ideas here. Thanks! Poor sausage went from the chunkiest baby in the swimming poll to skin and bones.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 21/10/2019 11:58

porridge, banana (banana heated up in the microwave is nice), weetabix, toast,

Chillisauceboss · 21/10/2019 12:01

Try different peanut butters if he's keen and maybe a way to explore different flavours? Or nut and seed butters on different breads - crumpets / pitta / breadsticks with apple to dip too? It's great healthy fats.

TeaAddict235 · 21/10/2019 12:18

Plain yoghurt or Greek yogurt and fruit ( chopped apples, bananas, anything in the fruit bowl or tinned fruit), and oats sprinkled on top.

Cheese on toast

ODFOx · 21/10/2019 12:25

Soft boiled egg and buttered soldiers

smemorata · 21/10/2019 12:38

@pippitysqueakity OP explains quite clearly what she means smemorata,
Alright snarky. OP says one thing but seems to be suggesting another. People aren't suggesting meals they are suggesting mainly snacks so I was asking for clarification. Do you usually police people's posts?

yetanotherdiagnosis · 21/10/2019 12:52

Maybe take the tablets earlier in the morning if he is on the slow release tablets. We tend to have dinner/tea at 7pm for the same reasons but DS goes to sleep around 8.30/9pm. Big breakfast, snack after school, late dinner. Lots of calories at the weekends and holidays when DS off the tablets. It's tough when they hardly eat on the tablets.

dustyphoenix · 21/10/2019 13:16

Supper (or a light tea) for us is usually :

  • Eggs (help keep them fully overnight), usually with toast/English muffins/bagels/potato scones. Can be boiled, scrambled or fried
  • toast with toppings - cheese, banana and peanut butter, smoked or flaked fish
  • Greek yoghurt with fruit and a bit of honey or jam
  • oat and banana smoothie (let oats soak in milk first, again really filling and long lasting)
  • cheese and crackers
  • if you've already cooked and dont want to again, picky bits like cocktail sausages, pork pies, sausage rolls, scotch eggs are good. But could be a bit heavy before bed as PP have suggested
-soup/cuppa soup (more filling if made with milk) and nice rolls (could try different ones - ciabatta, seeded, tiger bread etc
  • milk, again good for them and filling!

Cheese and ham croissant.
Crumpets.
Potato cakes.
Omelette with pepper, mushroom, sweetcorn etc.
Slice of gala pie from the deli counter.
Fruit salad.

drspouse · 21/10/2019 13:45

@yetanotherdiagnosis He's on quick release and school is not pleased when he takes his morning ones earlier (and we aren't pleased if his post school ones are too early!)

OP posts:
drspouse · 21/10/2019 13:46

@FrancisCrawford he'd eat sweet stuff all the time if he could... But rice pudding and yoghurt would be popular.
