Who is walking past my house at 3am?

So having exhausted all of our own theories, I wonder if MN has any good ideas.

About 6 weeks ago I bought a Ring doorbell. I'm expecting a baby in a few weeks and I'm already excited about knowing whether it's worth getting up to answer the door.

The strange bit, though, is that since having the doorbell I've noticed that someone keeps walking past my house at 3:25am. I live at the end of a cul-de-sac so it's not a through road. Theres a green out of the front of my house which separates the path running along the front of me/my neighbours and the roadway. The mystery walker is always wearing a high-vis jacket and only usually walks one way (into the dead end). It is always bang on 3:25am.

I am the last house on my row and I've already spoken to the house in the very end of the cul-de-sac and it's not them.

I wondered about the milkman but I know he comes about 5:15 as he often meets my other half.

It's not every day, but averages 3 times per week. Not always the same day.

The most recent time the camera caught them was 3:15am yesterday morning. They were 10 minutes early and this time walked both ways past my house, with a torch shining on the floor as they walked back. There is approx 20 seconds between them walking past the first and second time.

So, wise MN, any good ideas? Or am I going to have to camp out at my window from 3am tomorrow in the hope of seeing them?!

Isit Report what exactly?

pizzicato · 19/10/2019 17:20

Do you live near an airport OP ? My daughter had early shifts that started around that time so would leave home about 3am.

TottieandMarchpane · 19/10/2019 17:21

Where so you all live that the Neighbourhood Watch does foot patrols in the small hours?

Bluntness100 · 19/10/2019 17:24

Doubt a burglar, they seldom wander round in hi vis jackets 🤣

I'd also assume someone going to work, possibly taking a short cut.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 19/10/2019 17:26

I’m with the electricity board sub station theorist above

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 19/10/2019 17:27

Honestly OP; could you get up at 3, wait, then hang out your window and ask “hey, I’ve noticed you for a while now, just being nosy but who ARE you?”

coconuttelegraph · 19/10/2019 17:31

Going to work or walking a dog that you can't see and he's too far away to be picked up on the way back

Butteredtoast55 · 19/10/2019 17:32

I’d definitely stay up to see where he goes! As you say, it’ll be good practice 😀 I do remember when I was doing night feeds (we lived on a fairly modern housing estate at the time) being amazed how many people had house lights on and how many cars and people were around in the middle of the night.

Temeraire · 19/10/2019 17:33

Burglars and drug dealers do not run to extremely predictable timetables that you could set your watch by. People starting and finishing shifts at unsociable hours do.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 19/10/2019 17:34

oh god @Coconuttelegraph
I’ve now got “Invisible Dog” going through my mind in place of “Invisible Touch” by Genesis

BunloafAndCrumpets · 19/10/2019 17:34

Is it the next door neighbours milk man? That's about the time ours comes.

Why is no one reading the OP - the Walker doesn’t come back and it’s a dead end!!!

@Bluntness100 have a look at some home cctv footage of men in high vis checking out cars on people’s drives and burgling houses - high vis are usually ignored so actually it’s a perfect outfit for a burglar!

VenusTiger · 19/10/2019 17:39

*walker - not Walker.... although, it could be a scene from the Walking Dead 🤔😂

AllFourOfThem · 19/10/2019 17:41

I’m going to have to get one of these doorbells! Grin

betternamepending · 19/10/2019 17:42

If he does it a few times a week at the same time then it is part of a routine. He won't be a burglar but probably someone walking a dog before or after work. Or maybe just walking because he needs it before going tor sleep. Lots of jobs have different starting and ending times. Bakers tend to start reallly early for instance.

dottiedodah · 19/10/2019 17:45

I think in all honesty ,there is probably a rational explanation here. However it may be worth talking to NW If you have them . otherwise if you are concerned speak to police with your concerns ,They dont have to "do" anything as such but may keep an eye out for any problems

Witchofzog · 19/10/2019 17:47

Report to the police. Log with 101. Seriously? It's someone going about their business. End of. All this talking of lying in wait to watch is ridiculous. What will happen if you do and see a man with a high via jacket walking past? You will still be non the wiser. And don't you have better things to do. You know, like sleeping?

Saucery · 19/10/2019 17:47

Obviously a ghostly recording of a restless soul who trod that path on their way to work.

dottydally · 19/10/2019 17:49

Definitely no airport nearby, not near a train station and no neighbourhood watch (I didn't know they were really a thing!)

3am lookout it is I think..

We did have a giggle speculating that it could be my neighbour having an affair. We have seen an unknown female arrive just minutes after his wife left in recent weeks but it was only once and probably very innocent (it was 7pm and she certainly didn't come in a high vis).

Not buying a burglar is scoping the place out, three nights a week, for six weeks, in hi vis vest at the same time every morning. 🤣

BlueCornsihPixie · 19/10/2019 17:53

Surely if its a burgler he would come back again? Because he'd walk down and back?

It's presumably someone who either goes to the cars or through the next door neighbours. Or someone who lives on the other side of the road but prefers your pavement

Passthecherrycoke · 19/10/2019 17:56

I can’t believe there are people who wouldn’t be deeply embarrassed to phone the police about this. Cringe.

There are loads of reasonable explanations here. We’re not actually going to know if they’re right 😭 some people don’t seem satisfied unless there is an answer

Ohyesiam · 19/10/2019 17:57

You win the mn charming diagram award

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/10/2019 18:06

I cannot believe people are actually suggesting to contact the police about a man walking around.

The police would probably laugh and do absolutely nothing because they're busy enough as it is looking into actual crimes.

He'll be going to work.
