What's with the holding your ponytail and calling everyone 'my Queen'?

On social media?

Standard look seems to be vacant expression, one leg slightly forward, head on a tilt whole holding the end of your ponytail or a bit of your hair.

Then there are a million comments saying 'My Queen' blah blah blah. Now, I'm all for bigging up others but for the love of God, really?

I should just add that I'm very tired and grumpy today so this may just be me being a mardy cow.

And I know many will say 'oh I don't have social media'. Well fine, then you won't know what I'm on about.

No idea but I feel like I also now want to know...

TheFatberg · 19/10/2019 08:57

It's just the youth of today. We're not meant to understand.

WoollyFoolly · 19/10/2019 09:01

No idea, still trying to get my head around Vsco girls. Sksksk.

Tableclothing · 19/10/2019 09:02

I think it may have been influenced somewhere along the line by Queer Eye, but could be wrong.

burnoutbabe · 19/10/2019 09:08

I am a mature student at university. I don't understand them. SONEONE shouted at some Bloke they are waiting for "cone on rude boi" which I didn't think was a thing people actually said.

Mumista · 19/10/2019 09:10

At the risk of being ageist, I find it even less comprehensible when it's people who have long since left school doing it.

Ah yes, this I understand even less.

I look at photos of me and my friends when we were 18 or so and we're all smiling and actually look as if we're having a good time. At no point do I remember any of us contorting our bodies into the 'right' shape to be photographed. There was always one poser in your group (who everyone took the piss out of but it was normally just a bunch of pissed teens having a laugh. My friends (a lot of whom are still my friends) were more likely to call me a tosser than a Queen. Grin

Everything seems to be about appearance now, but as someone said upthread, maybe it's just the way it is now.

If you find out, let me know, OP. DD3 (who's 23) often calls me Queen in text messages. I haven't yet summoned up the nerve to ask why... she also uses 'yaaaaaassss!' a lot. But then, all my kids spell 'yeah' as 'yeh' which confuses me too.

I think I may be Officially Old now.

Jayaywhynot · 19/10/2019 10:02

I think referring to another female as my queen is female empowerment, bigging up your sisters so to speak. Lovely idea but they're probably ripping the shit out of each other behind the scenes Smile

SlatternIsTrying · 19/10/2019 10:08

I don’t mind the VSCO thing, I would rather that than some other trends. Will watch out for “my queen”.

SpiderCharlotte · 19/10/2019 10:57

I don't even know what this means @SlatternIsTrying. God I'm so out of touch!

I like the female empowerment aspect, that's always a good thing, I'm just not sure it sounds very genuine I suppose.

They wear the iconic 90s scrunchies, brightly coloured backpacks, seashell necklaces and carry a hydroflask decorated with stickers.

Oh I've just googled! Turns out I WAS one of them about a hundred years ago before it was a thing! Grin

Yeahnahyeah1 · 19/10/2019 11:03

Oh it’s just the latest trend. Like the peace fingers ✌🏻 was, or proper fish pouting, or the mirror selfie with the camera flash. It’ll pass and the new, weirder pose will soon follow.
But yea... it is strange.

NoHummus · 19/10/2019 11:04

I've seen some people (hopefully ironically) spell it kween. Which my phone just autocorrected to Karen. Grin

JennyCarrots · 19/10/2019 11:08

The older I get the more I'm having to use Urban Dictionary to decipher what the yoof of today are on about.

GrinGrin 'My Karen' doesn't quite have the same ring to it ...

Karen is the "can I speak to the manager" woman!

AliceLittle · 19/10/2019 12:46

Every social platform has a uniform. I see these mostly on insta but on YouTube it's that bloody awful drawl cloned accent making it sound like they can't be bothered to talk and the morning intro "hi guyyys, I hope your really really well, so today I'm going to..." And then put the hand in front of the camera to chance shots. I need to stop watching shit vlogs

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 19/10/2019 12:53

DS(13) has started calling me My Queen, I wondered where it had come from!

WhippetyStourie · 19/10/2019 13:12

Ah - is this why DD10 has been calling me Queen of late. Now if someone could explain ‘yeet’ to me I’d appreciate it.

margaritasbythesea · 19/10/2019 13:16

Now yeet i may be able to explain. Hang on, I'll get my nine year old

margaritasbythesea · 19/10/2019 13:17

Nope. Neither he nor his friend has any idea, although they say it all the time

troppibambini · 19/10/2019 13:20

This one has passed me by. I will call dd my queen as wait for reaction Grin
The vsco thing is just daft! The other night the dds dressed me up as a vsco girl and made me say andiooop, save the turtles sk sk sk and other shite...
She shared it with the friends... apparently I need a hydro battle to complete the look!

onetimeonlyy · 19/10/2019 13:21

Is it not from drag race / or queer eye. It's also used a lot in the black community right?
