When should Christmas appear in the shops?

I work in retail & our Christmas stuff has been out since September. I noticed yesterday that a few of my colleagues are already wearing festive shirts! It’s not even Halloween yet! I love Christmas but this is all a little bit crazy & unfair on kids too, especially little ones who won’t understand.

Things only related to xmas:
In shops, 1st December
Online End October

rslsys · 17/10/2019 18:50

Christmas stock - as soon as you like.
Christmas music - not before 1st December!

Sparklingbrook · 17/10/2019 18:52

I would imagine that the reason it's in shops so early is that there is a market for it. Those organised types that have already written their Christmas cards etc.

I LOVE Christmas but I think that American Thanksgiving weekend is when the holiday season starts. (So, the weekend after the fourth Thursday in November.)

This is coincidentally when a lot of pantos start at the earliest as well, so I think I must be correct. Haha

SilverySurfer · 17/10/2019 20:13

One week before Christmas Day, as should Christmas threads unless on the Christmas Board Smile

pikapikachu · 17/10/2019 20:48

Mariah Carey avoids Christmas music until Thanksgiving is over.

1st December. I also think the emphasis should not be on gift buying but on sharing quality time with people who are important to us.

RuthW · 17/10/2019 21:03

Imo shops are getting later and later every year. I think things should be out as soon as kids go back to school.

emmetgirl · 17/10/2019 21:52

22nd December

AuntieStella · 17/10/2019 21:56

Not before Remembrance Day, and ideally not until Advent Sunday

hippy1952 · 17/10/2019 22:18

After Remembrance Sunday!

TinselAngel · 17/10/2019 22:30

Agreed, after Remembrance Sunday.

Gingerkittykat · 17/10/2019 22:38

My friend posted a picture of a local department store with a full on Christmas display with massive reindeer, Santa and snow earlier today.

I think December 1st. The way things are right now means weeks of build up so you are sick of the festive season mid December.

Bunnylady53 · 17/10/2019 23:15

I didn’t know there was a dedicated Christmas board. Had to 🙂 at “ girdle my loins”!

At least we don’t have Christmas music yet! Although the instore music at The Range is pretty awfu!

After Halloween

Ooh no. Looking back at comments after Remembrance Sunday more appropriate.

Fatted · 17/10/2019 23:27

It's always been bloody September. I'm sick of people moaning 'it gets earlier every year' because it doesn't.

I still remember what I was doing on September the 11th when it happened. I was sorting out the stockroom in the shop I was working in ready for the Christmas delivery coming in that day, to be put out that weekend. That was 18 years ago. Nothing has changed.

megletthesecond · 17/10/2019 23:33

After Remembrance Day.

Minesril · 18/10/2019 06:59

After halloween.

I'd be happy for a tiny section to be Christmas all year, just long shelf life stuff. But Christmas jumpers, dedicated aisles, decorations and music should be December only.

Teacakeandalatte · 18/10/2019 07:23

I think Christmas stuff at any time for the forward planners, but all the music and fuss save till Dec.

Moondancer73 · 18/10/2019 08:49

December. Seeing it in September is ridiculous

AChickenCalledDaal · 18/10/2019 08:59

I've never understood the "people need to spread the cost" argument. Most presents are on sale all year and can be bought when there are no Christmas displays in the shops. And there's also nothing to prevent someone putting money aside every month if they need to spread the cost but want to buy Christmas-themed stuff.

The real reason shops put stuff out early is because people get lured into buying really and then end up buying more than they need to because the season goes on so long and they get suckered into thinking they must buy more.

Mid November for me. Preferably later. And I've hidden the Christmas board for the same reason.
