When should Christmas appear in the shops?

I work in retail & our Christmas stuff has been out since September. I noticed yesterday that a few of my colleagues are already wearing festive shirts! It’s not even Halloween yet! I love Christmas but this is all a little bit crazy & unfair on kids too, especially little ones who won’t understand.

I don't mind stuff like the big tubs of Roses etc being out early - they don't look Christmassy, but it lets people get some of their shopping done early if needed.

I think actual Christmas displays, decorations etc should be kept off the shelves until mid-November at least, and preferably December 1st. Then they could really go for it for a few weeks and we wouldn't be sick of it by Christmas Eve.

I agree with @Purpleartichoke about craft stuff - that needs to be out a bit sooner.

November 1st

1st Nov. After Halloween, but still time to get stuff bought & sent overseas

Not bloody August

When Advent starts. Which this year is 1 December.

I wish we could reign Christmas in a bit. Every year I girdle my loins and suck it up, but I dream of more festive decorum.
I was in India one year - there was nothing up on the 23rd, then absolute Christmas overkill for 3 days, then everything away by 27th. That would be perfect.

EmmaStone · 17/10/2019 16:06

1 November, and it depends on what it is. My heart sank seeing a store display full of advent calendars this week - that's too early for me (but I also always leave buying advent calendars too late, so maybe it's me that's wrong!).

PumpkinKing · 17/10/2019 16:13

I think mid-November. I love Christmas but with it being drawn out from September now it loses some of its magic by the time it happens.

upallnightpain · 17/10/2019 16:17

Does anyone know if any of the big supermarkets have their Christmas party food in? That always gets me in the mood!

GrumpyHoonMain · 17/10/2019 16:20

@ bettyrollinscampbandage - you don’t compare Christmas with Christmas in India, you compare it with Diwali and possible Eid depending on the location. Anyone who has ever been to India in the run up to Diwali with the many preparatory festivals and shopping mayhem will realise it’s exactly the same. You start preparing for Diwali several months in advance

After Rememberance Day

Mackerz · 17/10/2019 16:21

1st December. The Christmas (profit making) season starts way to early and it’s difficult to ignore.

thenightfury · 17/10/2019 16:24

I work in retail, The amount of people that come in around now and moan that the Christmas stuff is out already are usually the same people that shout as staff when there's nothing left on Christmas Eve 🤷‍♀️ things get put out early, they sell too, it's just business

AdaColeman · 17/10/2019 16:28

This thread should be on the dedicated Christmas Topic Board, especially as it is only October!

cometothinkofit · 17/10/2019 16:30

Second week of November. Halloween and bonfire night are both out of the way by then, so you can start thinking about putting your festive hat on.

keepingbees · 17/10/2019 16:34

After Halloween. It's good to have a few weeks to shop and spread the cost but it's creeping into shops at the end of August/early September now and that's ridiculous. It takes away the Christmas magic. I also hate how it's all being cleared away by boxing.

pikapikachu · 17/10/2019 16:39

Advent calendars need to be bought before 1st December so 1st December is too late imo.

Once December starts people will start exchanging gifts, having get togethers etc so need the clothes, cards, decorations etc before then. Personally I think after Halloween is fine.

HoldMyLobster · 17/10/2019 16:40

After Thanksgiving works well here.

Deadringer · 17/10/2019 16:42

In all my local shops and supermarkets all the Halloween stuff has been shoved over in favour of Christmas stuff, there must be more money in it. I don't really want to see Xmas stuff until December. I can't even think about buying presents yet as I am still recovering from the back to school hit on my finances.

beachcomber70 · 17/10/2019 17:01

1st December and not a day before.
Personally I'd like it to start on 22nd Dec and end on the 27th Dec.

I hate the greed, consumerism, and tat that abounds and goes into the bin afterwards.

bigbluebus · 17/10/2019 17:21

I also thing 1st December is soon enough. I've noticed more and more Christmas food in Lidl over the last few weeks. I just want to eat ordinary food between now and Christmas week!

bigbluebus · 17/10/2019 17:21

think

Boristhecats · 17/10/2019 18:14

It’s helpful for me to have craft shops in at least September but festive jumpers should be only in December!!!!!

Strugglingtodomybest · 17/10/2019 18:16

December. There should be no sign of it before December 1st.

It appearing too early has ruined it for me, it's not so special anymore.

ForalltheSaints · 17/10/2019 18:17

After Advent Sunday, usually last Sunday in November- 1st December this year.

TaffeeComeHome · 17/10/2019 18:18

1st December.
