DS just drank calpol

Before anyone starts, I've called 111 and I'm awaiting the call back. If anyone has read my other threads I'm having a shit time currently so be gentle.

Had to pick DS 3yrs 10months) up from nursery due to fever. Got home, made him a bed up on the sofa, took temp, grabbed calpol. There was no syringe in the box so walked in to the kitchen to get one of the spares, came back in the living room to find DS with the calpol open. Smelled his mouth and he's clearly had some. He's going from saying he didn't, to he had a little bit, back and forth. So I've no idea. The bottle was used and now has around a third in, I've no idea how much it had in originally but certainly wasn't full. I'd hazard less than half full.

Arrrrggghhh just what I don't need!

Can you weigh him at home? The medics might need to know his weight.

You will look back at this one day and laugh.

RoomR0613 · 15/10/2019 13:42

As someone who regularly loses the syringes and pours calpol out of the bottle into a measuring spoon I can tell you it doesn't flow very quickly so it's unlikely that he will have had time to swig more than the recommended dose for his age anyway.

I'm pretty sure he will be fine, hopefully 111 will reassure you.

nobigotsallowed · 15/10/2019 13:45

Op, you need to take him to A&E now. If you have no idea how much he has had, it could be a dangerous amount.

Better to be safe than sorry. I'm almost certain that's what 111 will advise anyway, so you're just wasting time.

My dd did this when she was 3 and I was mortified and obviously very scared, but everything was fine and I'm sure your ds will be too. Expect a bit of a talking to bollocking from the doctor though.

Hope all is ok.

DameSquashalot · 15/10/2019 13:45

I'm sure he'll be fine. Hope you hear something soon.

Quartermaster · 15/10/2019 13:46

Oh dear - a friend had similar and 111 said to take to A&E where they did a blood test to check paracetamol levels (in her child’s case they were actually zero!)

If I were you I would pack a bag now with some toys and snacks just in case. Hope it all works out ok!

A&E he will need bloods to check his paracetamol level in his blood. Delay without treatment if it is needed can result in damage to the liver, please get him seen.

Yeahthatthing · 15/10/2019 13:49

Quartermaster that's what I'm doing.

They probably will say A&E but we have several near us and they give us specific ones to to for various things.

I wouldn't wait but I'd go straight to A and E - in fact that is exactly what I did when my DD dd this when little. They did manage to workout when there that she hadn't ingested enough to be harmful. But I wouldn't hang around - especially as paracetamol attacks the liver.

slipperywhensparticus · 15/10/2019 13:49

Charge your phone download kid friendly apps

Actually it's most likely nothing to worry about the amount taken doesnt sound like a days dosage if it's one of those tiny bottles?

Charge your phone just incase

Venger · 15/10/2019 13:51

111 are very likely to direct you to A&E as it's a potential overdose of paracetamol.

Oldest DD did this several years ago. I was giving some to the baby and while I was putting the syringe into his mouth DD snatched up the bottle and swigged it down, literally right in front of my face. I grabbed it off her immediately but she had already swallowed some and I wasn't sure how much. They weighed her, did some blood tests and then repeated them a few hours later and we had to stay overnight for them to keep an eye on her. She was absolutely fine, I got a phone call from the HV next day to check everything was okay but just explained how it had happened and it was fine, no more said about it.

Hope your DS is okay.

Starlight456 · 15/10/2019 13:53

My Ds did this many years ago it was a new bottle but spilt on the floor . I had to take the bottle to a&e the measured what was in there and assumed it was all drank if not in bottle and he wasn’t in dangerous levels.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 15/10/2019 13:54

Basil90 goodness me you’re a helpful little bunny aren’t you!

OP I’m sure all is ok, it’s very unlikely he’s ingested enough for it to be harmful, as a PP says, it flows v slowly but yes, A&E to be on the safe side Flowers

bobstersmum · 15/10/2019 13:54

Fuck off Basil!
Op this happened to a mum at our baby group and they did tell her to take the child in to be seen but they were sent home shortly after being told that the worst that could happen was he'd be extra sleepy. Like you there was only a minimal amount gone from the bottle. You've done the right thing ringing, he'll be fine.

Venger · 15/10/2019 13:54

So irresponsible

Oh get to fuck. Did it make you feel good about yourself to stick the boot in?

Venger · 15/10/2019 13:57

A 'safe' dose goes by weight too so if he's a good size then the safe dose will be quite a bit more than what the bottle says, DS dislocated his elbow when he was 3yo and the hospital said I could give him twice the dose on the bottle.

puppyconfetti · 15/10/2019 13:57

Max does age for his age is 180mg in 24. Hours which is about 30mls.

Normal bottle contains 80mls, some was already used and there is a 3rd left which means he probably hasn't gone over the max dosage for 24 hours.

I would call my GP (in Scotland though so have only ever used 111 at night to access out of hours) for advice, but it seems 111 is used as a daytime service in England as well, so I agree to call them.

I wouldn't be overly worried though OP, it's unlikely he will suffer any ill affects.

puppyconfetti · 15/10/2019 13:58

Effects Blush

PablosHoney · 15/10/2019 14:01

OMG Basil Angry

Soubriquet · 15/10/2019 14:02

I’m sure he will be ok but it’s a good idea to ring 111 so well done

Hopefully they won’t have to send you A&E but if they do, try to stay calm and relaxed

Accidents happen.

2beautifulbabs · 15/10/2019 14:05

Poor you op sounds like your having a nightmare of an afternoon I agree with pp chances are he hasn't had a chance to drink more than what's recommended for his age but as a precaution it's best to get him checked over.

I'm sure children love to scare us and keep us on egg shells

Skyechasemarshalontheway · 15/10/2019 14:06

My eldest did this as a toddler when dh had him at home.
I met him at hospital they did blood work and turned out he must have had the tiniest amount if any as it wasnt picked up.
Hopefully it's the same for you op.

Yeahthatthing · 15/10/2019 14:08

I'm not massively worried, it can't have been more than 30ml (it's a 100ml bottle, was half full at most).

I'm waiting as they'll tell which panda unit has the least wait

OP posts:
inwood · 15/10/2019 14:09

Its actually really hard to get calpol out of the syringe bottles without a syringe, I doubt he would have had a huge amount.

earlynightneeded · 15/10/2019 14:11

@Yeahthatthing take a deeeeeep breath. It was an accident. I'm no dr but I'm sure he'll be fine. You've called 111. If they thought you needed a and e or an ambulance they wouldn't wait to call you back they'd tell you there and then

I hope he's ok. Maybe take some snacks and games to keep him occupied in case you do need to go
