Pushing a pushchair in the rain - raincoat ideas?

I am sure I'm not the only one who has this problem - I have a 20 minute walk to/from the nursery and when the rain is heavy I get soaked through as my raincoat doesn't extend far enough to cover my face. Can't use an umbrella at the same time as it is up and down hills, crossing busy roads etc.

What do you wear to stay dry in heavy rain? Links would be helpful, thanks!

Following.. hate this weather and I hate raincoats but need to givein and buy one

glasgowlass · 14/10/2019 13:34

Following, looking for ideas too. Sick of getting soaked in the rain.

GrumpyHoonMain · 14/10/2019 13:35

I use either Super Dry or Joules as they both have Raincoats / waterproofs that tie up really close to the face - so no water seeps in. Super Dry is better quality but sizing does run small.

Literally me, every day especially recently. I just get soaked, but get into work quite early so i have time to dry hair, change clothes if necessary and then put in make-up. On way home it doesn't really matter.
I'm still baffled that no one has come up with some invention like a clip on umbrella or something that attaches to the buggy. Probably too dangerous though

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 14/10/2019 13:42

Trespass hoods are big, but nothing will keep you as dry as an umbrella especially if you're walking into the rain and wind. It sucks.

PrincessScarlett · 14/10/2019 13:44

You need a proper waterproof jacket or coat that has a hood. I have a Trespass coat. You basically need something from an outdoors store that is used for hiking and the like. Anything I've bought from a high street fashion store has only been shower resistant and not waterproof at all.

Elbbob · 14/10/2019 13:46

Ah glad it's annoying others. I had the awful experience of walking into the rain which was falling at an angle straight on my face the other day. Agh. Once I tried to carry the umbrella handle down my top under my bra band.... no this didn't work!

You need a decent hiking/outdoor waterproof. North Face, Arcteryx, that kind of thing.

catyrosetom2 · 14/10/2019 13:48

Following. I am getting very cold and wet at the moment.

JoiningUpTheDots · 14/10/2019 14:38

Seasalt Janelle coat is what you need. Warm, totally waterproof, below knee length (on me- 5 foot 7) and has a decent hood so no umbrella needed. Go down a size from your usual size though as their sizing is very generous.

INeedNewShoes · 14/10/2019 14:40

I find a cap style hat good in the rain. It keeps my hair and face dry (unless walking directly into horizontal rain of course!).

NannyR · 14/10/2019 14:41

I use my hiking waterproof jacket which has an adjustable hood to make it fit my small head better. I've also used a baseball cap under a hood which works well to keep your face dry.

Clutterfreeintraining · 14/10/2019 14:47

I have a Protected Species coat. Even with 40% off, it was more than I'd normally spend on a coat. However, I've had it nearly a year and worn it in some really heavy rain and it has been 100% waterproof.

To a pp, there is an umbrella which attaches to a buggy - I think it's called buggybrolly or something...I'll have a google. It was good for when I have a baby in a sling/backpack but I prefer a coat the rest of the time.

PhonicTheHedgehog · 14/10/2019 14:50

I’ve got a Rains.

It’s got a peaked hood which stops my glasses getting wet.

Clutterfreeintraining · 14/10/2019 14:51

Nat6999 · 14/10/2019 14:55

I always had a big parka that was waterproof with a big hood & sleeves that were long enough to nearly cover my hands plus a pair of waterproof mitts or gloves from an outdoors shop.

RogueV · 14/10/2019 14:57

I have a Barbour waterproof parka for colder weather
And my north face resolve jacket for warmer weather

I make sure I toggle the good right around my face

RogueV · 14/10/2019 14:57

Not sure I like the look of that buggy umbrella. Surely it's dangerous if a gust of wind suddenly blew under it?

IVEgottheDECAF · 14/10/2019 15:00

Aslong as not too windy i can hold an umbrella and push my pram, with an almost 3 year old on a buggy board. Its very hilly here. It does make the pushing arm ache but i just rotate which is which!

Daffodil2018 · 14/10/2019 15:04

Agree with a baseball cap under a hood to keep your face dry.

I have a thin Hunter hooded anorak for warmish weather and a long hooded waterproof parka for when it's colder.

Bluewavescrashing · 14/10/2019 15:08

Seasalt tincloth coat is my favourite.

quirkychick · 14/10/2019 15:11

You need proper wet weather gear with a good hood, often from an outdoors shop. I have an Ilse Jacobsen raincoat that's 7yrs old for warmer wet weather, I can layer it with a warm jumper or cardi under. I have a Craghoppers parka for colder weather, it comes with a lifetime guarantee. Both were about £100 but have been worn loads and keep me dry. An umbrella is just not usable with a buggy.

FriedasCarLoad · 14/10/2019 15:12

A hat!

Hands free and protects my face (unlike a hood).

TheRobinIsBobbingAlong · 14/10/2019 15:23

I have one of these for walking my dog in the rain, but would be good for a school run too. They're not cheap, but they're very good and come down to calf length so keep a lot of you dry. They have a detachable hood.
