Do you have a food waste disposal on your sink?

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 13/10/2019 19:10

We've just had a new kitchen designed and I've insisted on having a waste disposal added because I hate plucking out slimy food waste from the plug hole. My DH is convinced he's going to force his hand down it and lose his fingers Confused (Yes, he does do stupid shit sometimes).

It's not possible, is it?

I would say it is possible in same way deliberately cutting your hand off with a large knife would be possible. As long as you are fully able to comprehend risk, you’d have to do it deliberately.

foodname · 13/10/2019 19:17

Oh I wish, I loved that in the states.

foodname · 13/10/2019 19:18

I mean I wish I had one, not that I wish you could lose your hand in one 😂

I’ve just had a new kitchen that includes a waste disposal unit. It does away nicely with the revolting food recycling caddy that I refused to use. I don’t care what anyone says - they stink.

Is your husband an absolute twat? Why the fuck would he knowingly force his fingers down it? I suppose yes, it would be possible if you were intent on doing so. Why any sane person would though is beyond me. Confused

lurker101 · 13/10/2019 23:45

We had one in our last flat. It was great and in 3 years no lost fingers! 😂
Be careful what cleaning products you buy for the sink - many said they couldn’t be used with waste disposal (never knew why though!)

minipie · 13/10/2019 23:55

I chose not to put one in our new kitchen - my parents had one and I hated the noise, plus I’m not convinced our sewage system can handle chopped up food that hasn’t been digested...

MockneyReject · 13/10/2019 23:57

Where does the food go?

RJnomore1 · 13/10/2019 23:59

I’ve got one but I still need a switch in to make it useable

Dh is terrified of it!

Leeds2 · 14/10/2019 00:19

With my one, there is a plug that you have to put in and twist to make it work. You wouldn't be able to put your fingers in it whilst the plug is in place.

AlexaAmbidextra · 14/10/2019 00:26

Where does the food go?

Down the plughole. To be ground up by the blades and flushed away by the water.

HoldMyLobster · 14/10/2019 00:41

I've got them in both my kitchen sinks. In 12 years I haven't yet manage to chop off any fingers.

The food in ours goes into the septic tank along with the rest of the waste water. Which reminds me, it needs pumping soon.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 14/10/2019 00:49

The only time I’ve had one, in a Victorian school convertion about twenty years ago, ‘things that weren’t supposed to go down it’ regularly went down. Teaspoons, cat poo (don’t ask), Important Stuff. The noise was terrifying and , as I lived on the top floor, I was never entirely sure where it actually spewed out. Like living in space, probably. Wouldn’t rush to have another tbh. Felt like a ‘studenty’ thing, not something a grown up aspires to.

OctoberLovers · 14/10/2019 00:57

We have one...
Im not keen, and dont use it often, im a little scared of it to be honest

puppyconfetti · 14/10/2019 01:02

No, but equally I never have to pluck food waste from the plug hole. A better option is simply to clear plates before washing.

Djimino · 14/10/2019 01:19

I have one. I've always had one. New ones are not noisy. I've had my latest one about 8 years. It's never chopped any of my fingers off, it's never jammed and we've never dropped anything important in it.

It connects to a nice straight bit of drain that we could easily rod if need be. But we haven't ever had to.
We put everything in it including chicken carcasses etc.

I wouldn't be without one
I always get a good powerful model.

7salmonswimming · 14/10/2019 01:25

Tell him to look inside it with a torch.

Does he stick knives into the toaster? No? He’ll manage a waste disposal unit.

VanGoghsDog · 14/10/2019 01:32

I had one when I moved in. It kept getting blocked because the pipes weren't quite fitted right, but when I had the plumber come and look at it I asked them to take it out.

I don't think ground up food should go into the water supply, the water board is pretty clear about what can go down the drains and I don't think food is part of it.

Also, they are scary and mine ate my flask lid which had rolled into it and I didn't notice when I turned it on.

I've not been plagued by having to pick slimey food out of plug holes since though. You can always put a grill on the plughole.

AllDaySnacker · 14/10/2019 01:44

I hate the noise it makes, I find it makes me nervous. As I clear leftovers from my crockery anyway, I have managed to avoid using it.

Kitchen sink gadget wise I’d recommend an instant boiling water tap over a disposal any day. Small chance of burn injury though, if your DH is paranoid about such things.

Djimino · 14/10/2019 02:55

I don't think ground up food should go into the water supply

😁you do realise what else goes in the water supply 💩💩💩

Waste disposal units are perfectly legal in the UK.

I wouldn't use one if I didn't have good access to my drains (although I've never needed it )

I also use mine responsibly - I try to put as little fat as possible in it.

AlexaAmbidextra · 14/10/2019 03:02

Wouldn’t rush to have another tbh. Felt like a ‘studenty’ thing, not something a grown up aspires to.

What a very strange thing to say. Why it should be any more ‘studenty’ than any other random kitchen appliance I can’t imagine. Confused

And for those saying to clear leftovers from crockery before washing, where do put your leftovers? I put mine down the waste disposal unit before I put the dishes in the dishwasher, to prevent cleared leftovers making bins smelly.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 14/10/2019 06:49

Well precisely because it’s chucking food in the sink Confused, (though disclaimer, I did live with some rather messy students, probably coloured my opinion Grin)

funmummy48 · 14/10/2019 06:54

We have one & I love it. Food waste bins make me gag. We fitted one in the kitchen in our old house & I missed it so much when we moved. When we fitted a new kitchen in our current house it was the only ‘must have’ item on our list. All our fingers are intact! 😉

bellinisurge · 14/10/2019 06:58

I love them when I use them at family's in the US.

RozHuntleysStump · 14/10/2019 07:28

We have one. Wouldn’t be without it. Can’t think how you would lose your fingers in it.

Mosaic123 · 14/10/2019 07:53

I love mine too. Always been careful with it (I've had one for over 30 years (2)0 I gather they are not very 'green' though.
