What is this rodenty thing?

The dog started playing with something in the sitting room. Then the something started squeaking and I panicked shooed her outside.

This was the rodent she caught. What the dickens is it? DH thinks it’s a mouse, I’m afraid it’s a baby rat. Envy

It looks like a very wet mouse.

It’s not a shrew.

BertrandRussell · 12/10/2019 19:30

Not a shrew. How big was it?

mineofuselessinformation · 12/10/2019 19:33

Looks like a field mouse to me.
I quite like them just not in my house!

bumblenbean · 12/10/2019 19:33

Vole?

Historydweeb · 12/10/2019 19:35

It's a baby rat. Definitely not a baby mouse. Sorry OP

Magstermay · 12/10/2019 19:35

Looks a bit like a gerbil, anyone lost a pet?!

Raphael34 · 12/10/2019 19:36

It’s very definitely a baby rat. Not a mouse or vole

Scrowy · 12/10/2019 19:38

I would be checking if any of your neighbours have lost a gerbil.

It's not a rat.

It definitely looks more gerbily than mousy, but it's wet and difficult to tell.

NetballHoop · 12/10/2019 19:38

That's not like the mice we get and it's certainly not a vole so I agree with @Raphael34 it's a baby rat.

Amicompletelyinsane · 12/10/2019 19:39

Baby rat. Tail is the give away

thenightsky · 12/10/2019 19:41

Bitter experience tells me that is definitely a young rat

timeforachange123 · 12/10/2019 19:44

I think its in the nose. A rats nose is blunt and a mouse's nose is pointy. I think it's a rat

user1493494961 · 12/10/2019 19:44

I also think baby rat.

diet4eva · 12/10/2019 19:46

Rat - time to call pest control!

Drogosnextwife · 12/10/2019 19:47

Depending on how big the ears are, can't see them very well, it could be a harvest mouse.

Drogosnextwife · 12/10/2019 19:47

Sorry feild mouse, not harvest mouse, they are too small.

Silversun83 · 12/10/2019 19:49

Another vote for baby rat 😨

Drogosnextwife · 12/10/2019 19:51

They have big ears which it looks like that one might have, long back legs and short bodies like that. I don't want to put up a pic but Google dead feil mouse. Looks pretty similar.

bobstersmum · 12/10/2019 19:51

Looks like a rat! We used to get mice at our old house which backed onto fields and our jack russell used to catch them. Not sure if it's as simple as that with rats!

SunshineAngel · 12/10/2019 19:52

Not a mouse or a gerbil, certainly not a shrew. I do believe it's a baby rat. There is an interesting statistic though that we're never actually more than 6ft away from one, so don't let it worry you too much.

We regularly watch rats scurry round next door's garden, as they have a communal rubbish bin (the large, skip type kinds) right next to their fence for a flat block that's behind us, so they always get them. Luckily they never come over to our side - or at least not when we've seen them!

I like rats actually, I'd happily have a couple as pets.

gnomeisland · 12/10/2019 19:53

Definitely a baby field mouse. They have blunt noses, very long tails, short bodies and kangeroo style legs.
Baby rats have longer bodies, more uniform legs and a long fat tail.

whojamaflip · 12/10/2019 20:05

Can't tell from the picture but are its ears visible? If they are it's a field mouse, if not it's a field vole.

Tweefutom · 12/10/2019 20:10

Thanks everyone. It looks like my house may be rat infested Shock. Am off to buy poison and traps...

Rat

Keeoe · 12/10/2019 20:22

@Tweefutom careful on the poison if your dog is catching the rodents, it could poison him if he catches and eats any. If its rats you've got, get a professional in. I think Local Authorities provide a pest control service if it is indeed rats.
