What is this rodenty thing?

The dog started playing with something in the sitting room. Then the something started squeaking and I panicked shooed her outside.

This was the rodent she caught. What the dickens is it? DH thinks it’s a mouse, I’m afraid it’s a baby rat. Envy

Rat I'm afraid

mrwalkensir · 12/10/2019 20:29

wood mouse if it has kangaroo-ey legs

Ffsnosexallowed · 12/10/2019 20:31

Looks like a baby field mouse to me

Frith2013 · 12/10/2019 20:37

It really doesn’t look like a rat to me and I shoot or trap them frequently round my hen pens.

TreesSandSea · 12/10/2019 20:39

DH says bank vole

endofthelinefinally · 12/10/2019 20:42

Look at the size of the blades of grass. That is too big to be any kind of mouse.
Baby rat I think.

Wheat2Harvest · 12/10/2019 20:44

"Looks like a field mouse to me."

Had to laugh at this. In my experience, whenever anyone finds a mouse in their house, 9 times out of 10 they describe it as a field mouse, as if there is less 'shame' in having a field mouse in the house than a house mouse. Grin

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/10/2019 20:44

Having bred rats I don't think that is one. Back legs too long and nose not Roman enough. But wet as it is, at that angle, I can't be 100% certain.

Elieza · 12/10/2019 20:45

Google photos of baby rat, field mouse, etc and see which you think it is. I can’t see the photo clearly enough to tell, my phone is not the best. It’s not a bike as it’s nose is t long and pointy as far as I can see? I’m 100% sure it’s not a house mouse.

Elieza · 12/10/2019 20:46

A “bike”, stupid bloody phone, a VOLE. Why does autocorrect not know that word ffs.

JapaneseBirdPainting · 12/10/2019 20:47

Oh it/s so cute!!

(I have no idea what it is).

lljkk · 12/10/2019 20:52

I reckon field mouse, though depends on ears (mice have big ears) tail is too long (legs not seeming right) for a rat.

Not shrew, mole or vole. Voles have very short tails & very different colour, so can't be vole.

D-Cats bring home a lot of rodent body parts; I know my UK rodents.
That said it does look gerbil like, but I don't think they're common in the countryside.

Zeldasmagicwand · 12/10/2019 20:55

Probably just a Mouse.
Do not put poison down!!!
Anything that tries to eat the dead vermin will die a nasty painful death too, so yours and your neighbours pets will be at risk.

PickAChew · 12/10/2019 20:58

Not a bank vole. They're very squat and squishy looking. And outrageously cute. We had them in our garden over the summer as well as a nesting field mouse and the field mouse was far more gangly like the op.

MitziK · 12/10/2019 21:00

Going by the corpses (and live runners) from DTwatCat #1's Mouseageddon 2019 Season, it is a Field or Woodmouse. There is a noticeable difference between them and a house mouse.

PickAChew · 12/10/2019 21:00

And yes, bank voles are a reddish brown.

ShellieEllie · 12/10/2019 21:01

Mouse

LemonPrism · 12/10/2019 21:01

Field mouse?

Wallabyone · 12/10/2019 21:04

Eek! Why do you think your house is rat infested? Didn't the dog find it outside?Shock

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/10/2019 21:04

He’s far too large to be a baby mouse. Mummy mice are only tiny themselves aren’t they.
He’s gorgeous, though. I’d be snuggling him if I found him.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/10/2019 21:05

FFS adult mouse not mummy mouse.
That’s my nephew he calls all adult animals mummy onesGrin

Encyclo · 12/10/2019 21:06

Rat, definitely a rat. Did your dog bring it in from the outside?

MyGirlDaisy · 12/10/2019 21:13

DH says field mouse - hope it recovers. Please consider humane traps, then you can release them in a different area. Poison causes a slow and horrible death.

PavlovaFaith · 12/10/2019 21:28

If the tail is hairless and ears are small, it's a rat.

lljkk · 12/10/2019 21:40

Field mice have hairless tails... mice have nice big ears.
The body shape is different mouse v. rat, the leg geometry is different, this is why rats often bound but mice only scurry.

Voles have little ears but short tails & very different fur from OP's critter. Voles also scurry.

Rats are chunky & robust build. OP's critter is skinny build & not chunky.
