Dd12 wants her helix pierced..

She’s been asking for about 6 weeks now. She has researched and watched videos etc.

I’m not sure what to say or do. I feel a bit of hypocrite as her dad has around 20 piercings. Iv also said I don’t mind piercings as she can take them out.

I’m guessing she’s way too young?

Is that the top of the ear? Doesn’t seem much different to rest of ear to me so I wouldn’t be bothered

Darksideofthemoon19 · 12/10/2019 17:54

That’s what I thought. She has two sets in her lobe already.

Is her dad 12 years old?

If not, then no-one's being a hypocrite.

Won't she have to take it out for school anyway?

What are school rules? Would have to be done over the summer in our school as couldn't have it in during school hours.

f83mx · 12/10/2019 17:56

But yeah not much point if she can’t wear it to school. Also does it need to be pierced in a studio - she may be too young - although I had mine and other piercings way before 16!

Velveteenfruitbowl · 12/10/2019 18:00

Fashions change really quickly. I wouldn’t allow my child to do this. Not because I’m against piercings (especially in ears, I mean come on) but purely because their taste will completely change from the age of 12 into adulthood and piercings (beyond the traditional one per love) are very much something that goes in and out of fashion. I don’t want to leave them with an unsightly hole that they regret later in life. I sometimes wish I hadn’t had my ears pierced so there’s probably an element of person feelings in my position that which may not be reasonable.

Cooper88 · 12/10/2019 18:02

I wouldn't say no outright, I would see what the school rules say in regards to piercings etc, she may well have to wait till the summer holidays and also see what you local piercing studio says, I'm guessing you know a reputable one due to your husband's piercings, then decide from there if the school says no piercings except one stud in each ear and your pierciest says no under 16s then the answer is made for you. Tbh I would let my 11 year old stepdaughter if it was up to me (obviously it's not as I'm not her mum and I know this etc etc before anyone starts 🙄)

SuperPixie247 · 12/10/2019 18:07

If she has done the proper research and she is generally sensible then I would let her get it.

Do ask her to research decent studios in your area that don't use guns!

Accidentalaccountant · 12/10/2019 18:09

No point 're waiting for summer holidays as had to be in 16 weeks not 6 as for lobes. Know this as mine has been in 15. Midlife crisis.

MrsJoshNavidi · 12/10/2019 18:10

I'm not anti piercing - I have some myself. But I would tell DD12 to wait until she is DD16.

nancy75 · 12/10/2019 18:10

Decent studios won’t pierce a 12 year old

AnyFucker · 12/10/2019 18:11

She is 12. Be a parent, for Christ's sake.

RolytheRhino · 12/10/2019 18:12

It'd be a no from me until old enough to not need parental consent. I'd say while I don't object to the piercing in principle, I object to the piercing on a twelve year old.

keepingbees · 12/10/2019 18:15

12 is young in my opinion, cartilage piercings have much more potential for infection and scarring than the lobe. Also school rules? Healing time is much longer than a lobe piercing. But you're the parent, it's your call. Get it done with a needle not a gun though.
I had my helix done at about 16 and whilst it healed ok it was a nuisance where it was, it constantly caught on my hairbrush, caught on the towel when drying my hair. It also healed up really quick when I had to remove it for college. Worth her thinking about.

Darksideofthemoon19 · 12/10/2019 18:18

Will get her to read here!

Thank you all x

AnyFucker · 12/10/2019 18:20

No. Don't "get her to read here". She is 12. You are in charge. Aren't you ?

MzHz · 12/10/2019 18:21

She is 12. Be a parent, for Christ's sake.

As ever, ^ this.

100% with you @AnyFucker, as always :)

PullingMySocksUp · 12/10/2019 18:21

I was told 6 months for cartilage to heal. In practice, a year in and they’re not quite healed yet. So if she needs to take them out for school it won’t work.
I think they’re a bit tricky. I think 12 is too young.

MitziK · 12/10/2019 18:33

School rules win out over wants. It won't be healed by September. As some kids have found out at work when it's been 'take it out or be suspended until you do' - and they're complaining of pain even after removal and regular care, which isn't surprising; mine hurt for a good four months and could get grumpy even after over a year if I slept slightly funny or caught my hair in one overnight.

They take a lot more looking after than simple lobe piercings, too. I would actually say my helixes were the most difficult of all to deal with.

Tl;Dr as somebody with a lot of piercings, I'd say 'not at all if they're against school rules including during PE'. And probably not even then.

Fizzypoo · 12/10/2019 18:38

I let my dd have this for her 13th birthday. She loved it but her curly hair kept catching in it and so it kept getting infected.

I'd let your dd get it done. It's not the end of the world if she doesn't like it in a few years and wants to take it out.

LolaSmiles · 12/10/2019 18:39

Don't get her to read this thread, don't blame school rules. Be the adult and tell her she's not 16, no reputable studio will do that for a 12 year old and she can have it done when she's 16.

Lunafortheloveogod · 12/10/2019 18:41

Check school rules first, show her a keloid scarred helix.. not a nicely healed never bumped one that advertises pretty studs. Keloids don’t go away on their own, or bloody easily, steroid injections to surgery is the usual treatment or having a lump on your ear forevermore.

My dms was pulled out so now my gran says it looks like she was pegged on the line by her ear (literally a small chunk missing). Obviously pulling them out isn’t common but increased risk with school/arsing about.

Maybe get ear cuffs? There’s ones that just clip on with no needles involved and if she wears them for what a year or two (check if a good piercing place will give you an age) then she can have it if she saves up with her own money..

millimollimandi · 12/10/2019 18:49

Watch Dr Pimple Popper re keloid scars - they can be HORRENDOUS and you don't know if you are prone to them until it's too late...

AlwaysOverworkedUnderpaid · 12/10/2019 18:51

Wow. Be a parent. She doesn’t need to “read here.”

missmouse101 · 12/10/2019 18:52

Do not allow OP. Surely not allowed at school? She is too young.
