How to make a grey living room look cosy and warm

How do I make a living room look cosy and neutral. I quite like a warm colour but do have a tendency to be over colourful and after a few weeks it feels over the top or a bit childlike.

I’ve tired magnolia and felt it make the place gloomy. So would like to try a grey but don’t want it to look cold and soulless.

Any ideas how to make it grey and cosy without looking like a circus?

Hints of yellow- cushions?

unwravellingagain · 12/10/2019 17:39

Snap. We have a pale grey living room, and it has some splashes of yellow in it, and also quite a lot of teal, in the form of a big sofa.

Try and find a slightly warm grey with an edge of pink - ours was Laura Ashley, but several years ago so no idea if they still do that colour.

We have a grey living room, but lots of texture. Furry blankets, cushions, carpet is a silver grey. Everyone says how cosy it is.

What colours are the things you have to keep? Sofa, chairs, carpet, curtains? Or are you having a complete refurb?

MairzyDoats · 12/10/2019 17:43

Dulux polished pebble is a lovely light grey which i teamed with white woodwork wooden floorboards, a persian style rug which had a lot of deep terracotta in it and cushions on the sofa in various colours. It looked very warm and cosy but still quite sophisticated, especially with the lamps on. I miss my old house!

BeanBag7 · 12/10/2019 17:45

We have grey but have cushions with pink and yellow to bring in some colour.

CluedoIsMyFavGame · 12/10/2019 17:49

We have 3x ochre walls and one grey wall, plus a grey sofa and light warm grey carpet. Plus dark grey built in cupboards. Warm but not overpowering. Just like this which was my inspiration

Lots of wood. I have four mid century coffee tables and some built in bookshelves. They are a great warm contrast to the pale grey. We're also have some small buds if deep red, a warm colour.

Moving but need to keep dark grey sofa, long wood side board, oak (but maybe teak) table and chairs. The carpet is creamy colour, and white fireplace.

We also have yellow cushions but can buy new if needed.

And need either curtains or blinds. Was thinking wood blinds, I love shutter or white wood blinds but not sure they would add warmth. Also the shutters would be expensive, and might look strange on the style of window we have.

@CluedoIsMyFavGame

I did read you need to add dark colours to add warmth. Looks lovely

The dark cupboards really do work (but were a pig to paint). Ours are full of books so the colourful spines also had colour/interest. The room does get a fair bit of sun but it has high ceilings and I wanted it to look cosy. DH wants to paint one more of the ochre walls grey but for now I have my way. It is really warm and inviting, especially with the lamps on.

We have Goosedown in our living room. Polished Pebble and Chic Shadow are good too. We have the fireplace wall painted in Crushed Aloe, which is a warm and subtle green. I don’t know whether it’s still in the range, but most stores will mix whatever you want. We have bright cushions and white wooden blinds, but it’s a bay window, so they’re not in your face.

I love my living room.

Dulux - wishing well
That is what I have in mind and it's gorgeous
Cushions all charcoal and a textured cream throw on black leather sofa
We also have wooden blinds and a wooden floor
I love it it never feels cold

Second the suggestion of Persian rug in autumnal colours. Lamps with warm bulbs, low-level lighting. Your furniture sounds cosy and warm enough.

Is the fireplace a working one? If not, some logs / pine cones with battery-operates candles / fairy lights in the hearth will warm a white fireplace up too.

fromcitytocountry · 12/10/2019 21:24

Yellow, mustard or royal blue. All look great with grey.
I have grey sofas and use these colours with them.
Upstairs one of our bedrooms is minimal grey and accented with blush pink, another has grey and different shades of bluey grey to accent it.

Bluewavescrashing · 12/10/2019 21:27

Add a pop of yellow 😜

puppymouse · 12/10/2019 21:47

We have dove grey walls with thick dusky pink curtains.

Freddiefox · 12/10/2019 21:52

Is the fireplace a working one?

Should have added it’s a fake electric plug in one, so no chimney breast, room is pretty featureless, thinking of adding a fake chimney so I can add some colour to.

Go for a warmer grey rather than a blue grey. Adding texture like tweeds, soft throws, cushions,.
Go for bronze / gold in the metal fixtures rather than silver. Ours has tweedy type furniture and creams rather than whites. A gold mirror, gold lamps, gold framed pictures. The curtains are a cream and grey plaid. We have a big soft cream throw. We have a sandstone fire place. And lots of dark wood furniture. It’s super cosy, even with wooden floors and no rugs (kids slipping prohibits).
I think the whole grey/white/ silver look is very cold and a bit Essex.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 12/10/2019 22:59

Grey is on its way out,it's all about sage green now dahling' 😉

marvellousnightforamooncup · 12/10/2019 23:03

I've got Egyptian Cotton on my walls. Warmer than straight grey, neutral but not boring magnolia.

LtJudyHopps · 12/10/2019 23:20

We have a grey living room - we got some burgundy cushions and curtains to break it up. If I had my choice I’d have mustard!

midsomermurderess · 13/10/2019 02:14

Burnt orange works well with grey.

TheNestedIf · 13/10/2019 06:30

Try Etsy.

Mines grey with a hint of pinks an rose gold- love not having a man in the house to do this!!! It looks so comfy and warm like a big pink fluffy blanket on the sofa. Rose gold lamp on my stand, white shelves with coloured or armaments in and picture frames. It's cosy now! X
