If you won the lottery, what would you buy that isn’t considered a flashy purchase?

What would I buy?

A professional oven clean, a magnolia tree for my garden and a proper family history/ancestry investigator team like they have on Who do you think you are.

Someone at the start of the thread said a professional genealogist to research family history; that's such a brilliant idea!

DeadDoorpost · 11/10/2019 15:28

More books. Pay off student loans, then fund my masters and PhD.

Bloomburger · 11/10/2019 15:34

I'd only buy flashy things. Boils my piss when Les from Skegness says he'll not give up his job at the biscuit factory, will buy a second hand Jag and take the family to Blackpool for a long weekend.

I want to scream you've just won 100 million squid go crazy man!

@Nottobesoldseparately

Good for you in wanting a staff .
They give so much pleasure and are fantastic dogs .
I understand what your saying about rescue though , we had to jump through so many hoops to get a rescue staffy We had to have 6 foot fencing NOT the 5 foot we had and were told the dog would wreck our house ☹️
in the end we gave up and got a staffy puppy that was advertised locally but was from a family with both mum and dad and it was the only litter they ever had .
Our second staffy was left with us when owner went away on holiday but he never returned to pick her up which was great for her as she loved living with us and lived to be 17 👍 she was about 6 when dropped off .
our third staffy was a pup from someone local who we have known for years and she still comes to visit him .
If I had the money I would set up a staffy rescue .

SamBeckett · 11/10/2019 16:09

I would get my teeth sorted ( all pulled and false ones put in )
Driving lessons and a car , a second hand one would be fine..

Pimmsypimms · 11/10/2019 16:19

My unflashy list is endless.....
A cordless dyson, I really, really want one but just can't justify the purchase.
A new sofa as ours is on its last legs
A new carpet for the stairs
A new carpet for our bedroom
New tiles for the bathroom floor
Blah, blah, blah. Too much stuff to name.
I'd better nip to the shop for a lotto ticket then!!

Icantreachthepretzels · 11/10/2019 16:21

I periodically work my way through asos and similar websites looking at the clothes I would buy once the lottery is won (that's not a maybe - this is happening). So a whole new wardrobe - nothing designer and nothing for ridiculous £££££ just nice, new normal clothes and shoes.

I've also already selected a lot of furniture from Maison Du Monde to put in my house. The house will probably be quite flashy though. Currently have my eye on a villa about an hours train ride from Rome - I'm guessing that counts as flashy.

SpaceDinosaur · 11/10/2019 16:22

A personal trainer

Jaxhog · 11/10/2019 16:26

An Alpaca (the animal) and new curtains for my study. Also replacement towels and new duvet covers.

The stupid thing is I can afford them now! Well, maybe not the Alpaca.

boringisasboringdoes · 11/10/2019 16:26

Yy to a personal trainer

I'd also like a made to measure blazer

And new flooring (ours is 15yo laminate)

dotty12345 · 11/10/2019 16:31

A new pair of black opaque tights each day through the winter and a black Newfoundland dog that I would call Simon Cowell (not to be ever shortened from the full name!)

Alsohuman · 11/10/2019 16:32

Tooth whitening, a cleaner once a week and a very long holiday would do me.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 11/10/2019 16:33

A new boiler or even better a geothermal heating system. Something warm with minimal environmental impact. Sick of being cold.

Mumofjustboys · 11/10/2019 16:36

Drunk..... Very, very drunk! Then i would probably get new carpets and a sofa, it has to be in that order so i dont ruin said sofa and carpet with red wine and/or red wine vomit

whodoyoufollow · 11/10/2019 16:37

Pay off all my debts, go to Australia travelling and by myself a nice little run around and I'd give up my job 🤣🤣 and put the rest into savings for my son when he hits 21 👍

BroomstickOfLove · 11/10/2019 16:40

Driving lessons.

catsmother · 11/10/2019 17:07

Big, properly soft and fluffy towels.

High thread count Egyptian cotton bedding, and decent pillows. A humongous decent bed actually.

A lot more fresh fish and seafood on a far more regular basis than I do now.

Electrolysis for my bloody witch hairs Hmm

Replacement properly fitted everyday bras as and when required (instead of when the elastic finally gives up)

Salon standard hair products which smell gorgeous

Lots of new plants and pots

isseywithcats · 11/10/2019 17:21

A decorator, an electrician, a kitchen fitter, tIler and a carpet fitter and all the bits that go with those trades so i could book a month long holiday in Barbados and come home to the doer upper house we are in , that was decorated top to bottom, new carpets, new kitchen and no work left to do ,

CountFosco · 11/10/2019 17:34

I've been thinking about this rather too much since the news of the big Euro win. As well as giving all my family £1M each (flashy) and telling DPs to write me out of their will (so siblings inherit more) I'd get the house really well insulated and install ground source heating. I'd tell work I want to take unpaid parental leave every year so I can have more of the school holidays off (wouldn't give up work, I'm a scientist and love it too much and am senior enough to have lots of flexibility already) and would get a gardener, and change the cleaner's contract so they became like an old fashioned daily who does a few hours every morning and does the laundry every day inc ironing, folding and putting away, aired then made the beds and tidied up the kids rooms, loaded and emptied the dishwasher, put away the shopping etc etc. Basically took on more of the daily crap so DH and I can enjoy life more.

Littlepond · 11/10/2019 17:37

Gym membership. I can’t afford one at the moment but I loved going when I could afford it. And a lottery win might just see me joining a super lush brilliant one and hiring a limo there and back 😂

PrivateSpidey · 11/10/2019 17:38

A huge Welsh dresser.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 11/10/2019 17:44
  • Proper Lurpak instead of Aldi's fake stuff
  • Some new work clothes and shoes.
  • We would probably move house. Nothing huge and flashy, but with a spare double bedroom for visiting family.
XXYY376 · 11/10/2019 17:51

A proper desk to go in my office. A beautifully hand crafted wooden one

LER83 · 11/10/2019 17:52

Laser hair removal, literally would cover head hair, eyelashes and eyebrows and tell them to go wild!

Theatre tickets. Going to the theatre is my favourite thing to do, but the decent seats are just soo expensive. Would go every week if I could.

verytiredandstressed · 11/10/2019 17:57

My teeth fixed at a good private dentist . My teeth aren't too bad but I'm terrified of the dentist so I'd pay for a good private dentist that will look after me fix my teeth .
I'd also have laser eye surgery I really couldn't justify the cost I'd rather wear glasses but if I had a lot of money I'd get it done.
I'd Also pay a carer for my son too he has special needs and we get hardly any respite , we rely a lot on my mil & fil but they are in there 70s so it's be lovely to have help .
