Plague of frogs, what to do?

We moved to this house in April. The garden was and is still pretty overgrown and we are swarmed with frogs. We can't even mow the grass without a massacre (DH is terrified of them also) Is there any way to keep them out or deter them? We don't have a pond and none of the neighbours do either so I can't figure out why they are here. DH just opened the back door to two of them sat there looking at him (or so he says Grin)

I don't know how to get rid of them but my friend lives on a road where they swarm. All her SM posts are about running over frogs, its appalling (boak)

IDontLikeZombies · 10/10/2019 20:45

That's no help at all, sorry OP.

What eats frogs? Snakes? I think that might be worse.

What about getting someone in to slash the garden back to short grass/ bare earth and then they won't have anywhere damp to hide and hopefully they'll hop off.

SleepwalkingThroughLife · 10/10/2019 20:47

I also have frogs and no pond. Nor do my neighbours have ponds. I am baffled by it.

Hilarious that an adult male is 'terrified' of frogs. Just catch as many as you can and transfer elsewhere to somewhere with a pond a few miles away. Or phone local wildlife trust for advice.

MayorMumbum · 10/10/2019 20:57

I don't think it's hilarious DH is scared of frogs. People have irrational fears about all sorts of things. Just because he's a man he's not allowed to be scared of certain things? Pish.

Better watch out for swarms of locusts next Grin. Don't move them as that can spread diseases between populations. I would try to get the garden more under control as they like long grass and damp conditions. Alternatively get a cat.

MayorMumbum · 10/10/2019 20:58

Although I do find the idea of introducing snakes in to the equation quite funny Grin.

You could get some chickens - they love frogs!

Hecateh · 10/10/2019 21:03

I have a lovely huge warty toad in my garden, with no water. No frogs though, they generally do need water.

Any chance these are toads.

Doesn't solve your problem directly but - I have some magnificent hostas - the slugs are all eaten by the toads

MayorMumbum · 10/10/2019 21:05

The solution seems to be chucking various other animals at the problem Grin.
It's a rented house so we can't have cats, chickens or snakes. It seems so odd that there isn't any water about but they won't leave. Never seen so many before in my life.

They could be toads. I'm off to Google the difference Blush.

I did not know that chickens ate frogs. How does that happen? They don't seem equipped to be able to enjoy amphibians for their dinner.

MayorMumbum · 10/10/2019 21:08

They are in fact...toads. Is that better or worse? I don't see slugs very often come to think of it Grin.

You can see how this could esculate and you find yourself explaining to the landlord why there are 3 bears and rhino in the back garden 😂

MayorMumbum · 10/10/2019 21:12

"But mumsnet told me that Rhinos eat frogs! Can I still have my deposit back?“ 😂

FurrySlipperBoots · 10/10/2019 21:15

Look on them as being built in slug deterrents!

stucknoue · 10/10/2019 21:19

I can send my dog around ... he doesn't hurt them but seems to be fascinated by them, nosing them to make them hop. They quickly moved out! We don't have a pond, none of the near neighbours had a pond but we did have overgrown areas.

ArtichokeAardvark · 10/10/2019 21:23

Sounds like a job for Moses...

Could you scatter something over the grass? I know smashed up eggshells are supposed to deter slugs because it hurts to slide over them, maybe there's a toad equivalent?

IDontLikeZombies · 10/10/2019 21:27

Toads? Oh no, they properly give me the willies. I was brought up by a properly superstitious bunch of people and one of their things were that toads were witches familiars. You might need to add an excorcist to the snakes, chickens, cats, dogs, bears and the rhino Grin

IDontLikeZombies · 10/10/2019 21:28

Or an exorcist, even Grin

hellojim · 10/10/2019 21:30

Any chance that there is or used to be a pond in the area? The toads could be returning to hibernate.

IstillmissWoolworths · 10/10/2019 21:31

They can come and live in my garden. I love toads and frogs. I've got a pond and live a stones throw from a canal and don't have a single one.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 10/10/2019 21:34

I'll have them. I have a slug problem which is much worse.

AutumnCrow · 10/10/2019 21:34

I'll have them. Where are you?
