What can I do about the people who use the area outside my house as their dog's toilet?

We live at the end house of a cul de sac. The end of the road has hedge/trees along it. Several dog owners routinely walk up to the end, get their dogs to pee, then walk back home. They do pick up turds but the area in front of the house stinks of dog piss permanently.
They clearly make a special trip to there as there is no way through.
Last week I challenged someone and when I got back at the same time today he legged it when he saw me.... Suggesting he feels a little bit bad but not bad enough to get his dog to piss in his own garden.
It is public land at the end of the road but pretty horrid to come in and out of front door with stink of dog piss. Any suggestions what I can do?

I have a similar problem with people letting their dogs shit on my driveway.

Sloshing a load of Jeyes fluid works quite well for a while. No good if it’s undergrowth though!

DannyWallace · 08/10/2019 20:25

I don't understand.
Is it part of your property they are peeing on, or just beside your house?

Blue5238 · 08/10/2019 20:27

Danny Wallace in front of my house but on the road so not my property. Hence why I suspect there is nothing I can do. Just annoying when you can smell it the moment you open the front door or window, and they have gardens but evidently prefer that their gardens don't smell of dog piss.

Terraced houses with tiny front gardens so close to road

It sounds like they can't win really. Just he other week someone was complaining about wee on the pavement and that owners don't put their dog in the road gutter to wee.

If it's a piece of grass with hedges and trees and it's not your house then I'm not sure you can really complain

BinkySodPlop · 08/10/2019 20:31

Not sure what you can do to stop it, but white vinegar is good as a smell neutraliser for animal wee.

Blue5238 · 08/10/2019 20:32

It's not grass it's the end of the road. And I'm open to being told I am unreasonable (despite this not being AIBU). The dogs aren't part - way through a walk, they take them out of their house, walk 20/30/50 yards to outside my house, dog pees, go home. Just don't get why they can't use their own gardens.

Is it grass or? If its pavement prince it off

adaline · 08/10/2019 20:35

It's hard because once one dog has peed there, they're all going to want to do it - especially males.

Lots of dogs won't toilet in their own garden either and so owners have to take them out to the toilet - and you can't just stand them outside, you have to walk them around a bit to encourage them to "go".

I agree it's not pleasant but I'm not sure there's anything you can do about it.

Geneva1995 · 08/10/2019 20:40

You challenged someone who was allowed their dog to wee in a public area?Hmm
Most dogs won’t pee in their own gardens and like to sniff around and mark their territory.

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 08/10/2019 20:43

FWIW I walk my dog to the grass at the end of my road for late night toilet. I'd prefer it if she would go in my garden but she seems to need the walk to get into the idea of it. I do pick up poo and nobody is getting the smell of wee stuck up their nostrils as far as I can tell because the layout of our road sounds different to yours. If a neighbour told me it was causing a smell problem for them I'd have a think about what I could do differently. I am training my dog to go on command because honestly it's easier for me if she goes in my garden

LolaSmiles · 08/10/2019 20:46

coffee
Even with going on command they can be awkward. Mine will usually go on command at night (no other time) when we take her out but recently she's been really stubborn and deciding that she won't have her nighttime wee when it's wet and would rather wait til morning.

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 08/10/2019 20:54

@LolaSmiles don't. I'm used to sturdy, countryside, love the great outdoors no matter what the weather type of dogs. This one is a rescue and the biggest princess going about not wanting to go outside in "Weather" Hmm I'm flummoxed 😂

LolaSmiles · 08/10/2019 20:58

Coffeeandchocolate9
Ours is still very much like that. She'll go when in the countryside and will get covered in all sorts, but wet on a night before bed... Hell no. Hopefully she'll snap out of it as it's a recent thing.

What do you do for princess dogs like yours?

dudsville · 08/10/2019 21:05

Mine do their morning send evening toileting in our garden, but all my dogs scent mark on walks. Can't be helped if we are to let dogs "dog".

pumkinseason · 08/10/2019 21:10

Where we live people claim responsibility for the patch of green outside their houses. People who don't want dogs peeing put up little edging fences which stop the dogs access the grass and put up little no dogs pee signs.
But if others mow the grass this isn't going to work.
If it isn't grass I would put an outdoor cleaning fluid down.

LolaSmiles · 08/10/2019 21:14

Except the grass outside their house isn't theirs so policing it is as ridiculous as people who have a house with no off road parking but feel they have rights to "their" spot.

It's a bit of a silly waste of time given that mice, cats, foxes, birds will all deposit their waste there.

justasking111 · 08/10/2019 21:18

Our council will put up a little sign on a lamp post if you contact them, otherwise you can buy them. Jeyes fluid diluted solved our problem, but you do have to reapply when the smell goes.

Blue5238 · 08/10/2019 21:22

Geneva, challenged is probably the wrong word... I enquired whether he had deliberately brought his dog to pee outside my house and lamented that opening the door to the smell of piss was getting me down. I am fully aware that it is allowed. I just find it a bit antisocial.

I hadn't realised that some dogs won't pee in their own gardens as my friends dogs all will. But probably still not a reason they all have to pee outside my front door day after day....

OP posts:
pumkinseason · 08/10/2019 21:24

@LolaSmiles we aren't in the UK so it isn't identical but OP has a problem with dogs not wild animals or cats.
If it is a grass based issue then creating a barrier will help.
If it is a pavement then Jeyes fluid or similar should help.
I wouldn't want to have a dog's toilet outside my house either.

pumkinseason · 08/10/2019 21:27

A slightly overspilling sprinkler also works well to keep dogs from lingering outside your house but not over winter.

adaline · 08/10/2019 21:28

But probably still not a reason they all have to pee outside my front door day after day...

It won't just be dogs either. Bird shit, fox wee, cat wee/poo and all sorts will be all over the pavements.

But yes, I know it's not pleasant but some dogs will just wee and there's not much you can do to stop it. Yes, you can walk them away and say "no" but by then they've already started so the damage has been done!

Mine marks a lot less now he's neutered but if he sniffs and can smell urine you can bet your bottom dollar he'll pee on top of it (and often lick it too, the grim bugger!)

Raphael34 · 08/10/2019 21:31

No, challenged is probably the right word for what you did there. Unless their dogs are shitting all over the grass and they’re leaving it there, then you have no right to complain. For 4 years I lived in a house that backed onto a farmers field of crops which had tonnes of fertiliser spread on it every year. I’d swap that for a hint of dog piss when I walked outside anyday, I could smell the shit in my house. You’ll either have to put up with it or move. One day you’ll ‘challenge me the wrong neighbour..,

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 08/10/2019 21:33

Sprinkler over the pavement? That won't go down well.
I'm off the walk mine for the evening.

LolaSmiles · 08/10/2019 21:36

But what's the difference between dog wee and cat wee or mouse wee or fox wee?
I used to be scared of dogs and not a dog person at all, but still found some attitudes to be bizarre. Now I own a dog it seems even more bizarre to me.

Nobody owns the path or road or verge outside the their house, nor the end of their street, be it to monitor parking, dogs, kids playing or whatever else on MN people gripe over.
