What can I do about the people who use the area outside my house as their dog's toilet?

We live at the end house of a cul de sac. The end of the road has hedge/trees along it. Several dog owners routinely walk up to the end, get their dogs to pee, then walk back home. They do pick up turds but the area in front of the house stinks of dog piss permanently.
They clearly make a special trip to there as there is no way through.
Last week I challenged someone and when I got back at the same time today he legged it when he saw me.... Suggesting he feels a little bit bad but not bad enough to get his dog to piss in his own garden.
It is public land at the end of the road but pretty horrid to come in and out of front door with stink of dog piss. Any suggestions what I can do?

Honestly where we live it is done quite a lot, it has two things that make it work. Dogs don't want to hang around getting wet and two it washes the smell off the area so marking is less of an issue.
There are plenty of places dogs can pee where no one cares so where we are people tend to avoid the areas where it is an issue.

horse4course · 08/10/2019 21:41

Couple of pots of lavender outside your door to cover the smell? Flower seed bomb thrown at the pissy bit (won't work all year, but maybe a bit)

pumkinseason · 08/10/2019 21:42

Lola having had a pet mouse 🐁 there is no doubt their wee is stinky but there is a great deal less of it than a dog's.
Again OP reports seeing dogs pee in the problem area rather than a stream of mice using it as a toilet.
The biggest issue is that wild animals are in natural proportional numbers to their environment and dogs aren't.
It doesn't seem unreasonable that OP doesn't want the smell of dog pee every time she steps outside.
In Japan dog walkers carry bottles of cleaning fluid and sluice down the pee.

Adaline I get this....
'But yes, I know it's not pleasant but some dogs will just wee and there's not much you can do to stop it. Yes, you can walk them away and say "no" but by then they've already started so the damage has been done!'
... My point is that the dogs have been deliberately brought to this spot to pee. They aren't mid-walk, this is the owners chosen pee spot. They have to go out of the way to get to it. I am assuming that if they did a different route every night the dog would still pee somewhere? But it seems that because the dogs all pee there they need no encouragement so it's an easy way to get them to pee and get back home quickly.

Raphael I honestly don't get your attitude. So because you were majorly inconvenienced by living next to a farm it's fine for dog owners to be as antisocial as they like in an urban area because you've had to put up with worse. Um, okay.

Does anybody actually understand what the dogs in the above scenario are peering on?? Not grass and not pavement.... what is it?

@LolaSmiles she's 5kg. She's going outside whether she likes it or not Wink

SleepyKat · 08/10/2019 21:48

You must have a good sense of smell.

I live on a busy village high street, tiny bit of garden between me and the pavement. Dogs up and down all day weeing on the pavement, inc against my wall and gate post. Never smelt a thing. Can’t say it bothers me and some of that wee actually comes onto my property when they wee up the gate post. Not ideal but I’m fairly chilled about it.

So yes, sorry I do think YABU. It’s not your property, you said there’s hedge/trees so a fair bit must soak away into soil/grass.

Fatshedra · 08/10/2019 21:53

Jeyes fluid is worth a try, if you break the habit of the dogs peeing there and they go elsewhere others will then follow (marking their territory).

Blue5238 · 08/10/2019 21:58

The road goes to the end of the cul de sac. No grass, no pavement. Overhanging bushes from retaining wall above but they pee on tarmac.

Will try jeyes fluid. Thank you to everyone for recommending

Why don't you just put up a big sign in a nice polite way stating you have no problem with dogs at all but it has now become such a problem u cannot open your windows/door etc cos of smell please dont wee here. Or put a big cactus by the wall or broken glass or giant garden gnome or better still a memorial plaque most people wouldn't let their dogs wee on those or I know some sort of plant with massive warning sign saying this is toxic to dogs keep away can cause head to fall off or aaome such thing

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 08/10/2019 22:49

For fucks sake don't put down broken glass! Angry

adaline · 09/10/2019 06:54

My point is that the dogs have been deliberately brought to this spot to pee. They aren't mid-walk, this is the owners chosen pee spot.

Presumably because they know from experience that if they take their dog there, it'll pee, so it's a quick way of doing a toilet walk.

And why can't your road be part of their dog walk? I often walk my dog along random roads and cul de sacs - mainly because they're quiet and have minimal traffic, but also because they're close to home and sometimes I have to rush off to work after!

Some sort of sprinkler so that they will be soaked?

Raphael34 · 09/10/2019 07:38

Taking the dog out for a piss is not ‘anti social’

Hydrogenbeatsoxygen · 09/10/2019 07:41

Make some official looking signs and put them up. That might deter them.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 09/10/2019 07:46

Make some official looking signs and put them up

Wouldn't that be slightly misrepresenting?

And whoever suggested putting broken glass, shame on you.

Hydrogenbeatsoxygen · 09/10/2019 07:49

Wouldn't that be slightly misrepresenting?

So what?

Frouby · 09/10/2019 07:50

Using a mix of biological washing powder, or zoflora pets or flash pets multi purpose cleaner will neutralise the smell OP. You can buy fancy stuff from pet shops but the above work just as well. Just slosh it over the area. If it's on grass check Jeyes fluid, I know it's safe for using near vegetation.

Once the smell has gone, they won't necessarily want to pee there. Are there other areas they can take them? Am sure if you explain to passing dog owners that it's getting smelly they will try and walk somewhere else.

Another option might be one of those sonar things. If the dogs aren't happy outside your house they won't want to linger for a pee.

Our ddog pees on the slabs on our garden and they do get a bit whiffy, especially in the summer. I just sloosh it down with one of the above solutions once a week and it keeps it fresh.

Not going to write anything - as it would get deleted.
Just for you BiscuitAngryBiscuitAngry

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 09/10/2019 08:03

That would be lying? But that’s ok with you?

Laurie01 · 09/10/2019 08:16

Save egg shells, let them dry, crumple them up into tiny pieces, scatter them all over the pavement, dogs don't like walking on them!
Also sprinkle pepper around too, makes them sneeze and deters them!
