Which toys does your 9 year old boy play with?

DS does not really play with toys, but enjoys football. He has asked tonight for a toy that isn't Lego but does not know what exactly!

I thought I'd ask you what your 8/9/10 year old plays with for some inspiration to fill the weekend when he isn't playing footy....

I have (just) 10 year old twins, one is obsessed with football and the other Pokémon, they both like comics and drawing and Lego but if I’m honest they’re basically killing time until they’re allowed back on the switch/PS4.

They do still like to buy smashers and superzings but don’t actually ‘do’ much with them. Lazer x and hex bugs and board games. Oh and books but we have library cards.

Their last birthday list involved a fair amount of robot type toys but they’ve not done anything with the ones they received Hmm I miss the octonauts phase...

Spiderpants · 06/10/2019 22:13

My 9 year old is into football, hockey, nerf guns, army figures, match attax, guns and shields, scooter, bike, uno, laser x,

Iwantacookie · 06/10/2019 22:14

Xbox and football that's it. Will sometimes pick a nerf gun up or Lego but not for long.

almostn9ne · 06/10/2019 22:20

Speed Stacking

Chocmallows · 06/10/2019 22:20

Brain box games
Hexbugs
Nerf guns
Football/cycling
But Nintendo switch gaming and watching YouTube are his favourite hobbies

4forkssake · 06/10/2019 22:30

Nerf
Bike
Cricket set
Football rebounder
Lego
X box rocket league & occasionally Lego games
Roblox

4forkssake · 06/10/2019 22:30

Oh & guitar

purpleolive · 06/10/2019 22:35

Lego, transformers, and wrestlers. Likes the new Zelda switch game. Big football fan so mostly plays that outside!

purpleolive · 06/10/2019 22:36

Going to get him a smart ball for Christmas.

purpleolive · 06/10/2019 22:37

Oh yes military figures too

Saisong · 06/10/2019 22:40

My just turned 10yo likes (when we remove the Nintendo Switch):

Lego esp Technik
K'nex
Micro scalextric
Science experiments

Parttimewasteoftime · 06/10/2019 22:44

Knex and hotwires are a hit here.

Mimca · 06/10/2019 22:45

My 8 year old loves...

Reading
Lego
Comics - reading and creating his own
Mine craft
Nerf guns or anything that's a weapon Confused
Playmobil castle for battles
Snap circuits
Board games
Guitar
Knex
Science experiment kits
Spy/secret agent books and gadgets
Secret diary and any type of felt tip pens (fine, thick, water colour brush tips)
Martial arts

He would love a games console but he would do nothing else if he had one and it would be a continuous fight restricting it. Minecraft on the iPad is bad enough. He is a very indoor child and has to be dragged out to kick a ball around or jump on the trampoline.

LeGrandBleu · 06/10/2019 22:47

Kapla , maybe buy a kapla book at the same time for inspiration
and a bag with thousands of soldiers figurines, tanks, helicopter and so on

LeGrandBleu · 06/10/2019 22:49

and maybe purchase this book www.amazon.co.uk/Dangerous-Book-Boys-Conn-Iggulden/dp/0007232748?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

This thread makes me so sad. My DS just turned 9 and still plays with toys but it sounds like it's coming to an end of this is anything to go by.

He likes :
Lego- mainly acting out little stories/ battles /adventures with minifigs and some building
Doing as above with action figures /animal type toys
Making potions
Science experiments/sets
Reading
Drawing little books/comics
Board games
Football and other ball games
Going out on bike/scooter
Spy gadget type stuff
Playing on swing set
Making things and arts and craft type stuff
Making little YouTube type movies and videos

BertieBotts · 07/10/2019 04:38

DS just turned 11. No close siblings.

"Speed cube" (modern rubik's cube)
Board games - Santorini, Uno, Frustration (but needs other person)
Has just asked for (and plays with) book of cat's cradle tricks.
Got magician set for 8th or 9th birthday, has just got into it recently.

Does not play with lego any more.

Would look at:
Gravitrax
Hexbug nano
Thinkfun gravity maze
Rush Hour puzzle toy
Klutz Lego books (chain reactions, stop motion etc)

Mmmcolacubes · 07/10/2019 05:14

My 9 year old is "into" things but didn't necessarily pay with then. Pokémon cards are a favourite. Vintage comics, Marvel etc. Any spare pocket money usually guess on on these.

Also into Bakugan toys.

Loves board games but we don't get a lot of time as the age gap with his siblings doesn't work. Labyrinth probably a favourite.

Is keen to get the Lego range that interacts with an app of some sort. Otherwise is starting to lose interest in Lego.

The Playmobil spy/secret agent range still seems popular.

Ozgirl75 · 07/10/2019 05:25

Mine has just turned 9 and I had a big clear out in the playroom earlier this month because I realised that he doesn’t really play with toys any more.

He likes board games, playing tennis against the wall, football on the trampoline, drawing in chalk on the drive, playing badminton, reading, listening and playing music, Pokemon battles - all with his 7 year old brother. They don’t have a games console.

He’s never been super into toys or imaginative play though although he did used to LOVE toy cars and will occasionally play with them again.

FixItUpChappie · 07/10/2019 05:28

My just turning 9yr old plays still with all the toys - different ones in spurts with his little brother. Lego, costumes, imaginative play accessories, Playmobil (a bit), those little green plastic army men, train stuff, Star Wars bits etc. Items become in vogue as imagination sparks an activity. Lego would be the most popular toy on a day to day basis though. His birthday party was yesterday and he was very pleased to get a remote control car, a flying/hovering thing, spy walkie talkies, Star Wars figures, lego, a puzzle and a board game.

We do not allow regular video game or tablet play and do not allow tv after school on school nights. IMO that has encouraged continuing toy play because that is what is available. Having a little brother helps too. He could easily play sports for hours though or ride bike/use his scooter - that will eventually take over as independence expands I am sure.

I do think some are natural players and some aren’t. I have 4 children, my boy is the last and I’ve been shocked and flummoxed about him not wanting to play! All my girls have played for hours with toys, imaginary play being huge. He just hasn’t! From such an early age he just has never played but has always been happy being busy and outside and happy with a ball. I’ve had endless Lego, brio, dinosaurs, cars, etc and he’s barely looked at anything! Take him to football practice and he’s so happy. He doesn’t watch any (and I mean any) TV but will watch YouTube videos on football shots and hacks for hours! I hate winter as he’s outside less as the weather is rubbish but he will do a bike ride in the rain so I try and do that once a week. I’d love for him to play more but I don’t know how to do it if it’s just never been ‘his thing’.
I have bought a few of these suggestions though for Christmas! The football rebounder is never heard of but know he will love that. Am also buying the ‘dangerous book for boys’ as that sounds up his alley! And the rush hour game. I’m liking all the suggestions!

Teddybear45 · 07/10/2019 12:45

My 7 yo neice plays with Lego, meccano, snapcircuits, raspberry pi, and since DP started building nursery stuff in front of her has started to show an interest in carpentry so DP is looking to build her a first workshop. She’s a girl though - might be different for boys Hmm

Janus · 07/10/2019 12:49

Can someone recommend a Lego set you use with an app as I think mine may quite like this but I’ve not heard of it??

NK1cf53daaX127805d4fd5 · 07/10/2019 12:51

Apart from video games my 9yr old likes playing with figures, drawing and Lego. He has a fantastic imagination and can play with his sister for hours
