How would you pronounce Alastair if you aren’t Scottish?

Al a stair
Or
Al a ster / Al a stuh

DH and I aren’t sure and we have a friend who is one. Might have to ask his wife but I’d rather not.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 06/10/2019 17:19

Al-i-stuh is probably the closest I can write it. With most emphasis on the Al.

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/10/2019 17:20

Al iss terre

grumiosmum · 06/10/2019 17:20

Al - iss - tare

Finfintytint · 06/10/2019 17:21

DH is Scottish and pronounces his name Al a Stuh. All his English friends call him Al a stair which sounds a bit posh for him.

PullingMySocksUp · 06/10/2019 17:21

Ignore my first bit, it’s more the

Al a STAIR

Vs

AL a stuh

That were arguing about. So emphasis and last bit.

You pronounce it Allister unless he's a rare Allistare. Don't think I've met an Allistare in the flesh in my 48 years of living in Scotland.
