Do you feel comfortable walking alone at night time?

I have never felt 100% safe walking alone at night even when i was younger.
I have just driven to the shop and noticed a few females walking alone along the main road although it isnt lit up very well.. This is how it should be of course and I wish i had their confidence. After years of driving and rarely going out after dark as I am looking after my Son I feel I would be really scared to do that now.

Am I being daft or realistic?

(I live in Brum)

Yes I do and always have. There are certain shortcuts I might avoid at night though.
I am always quite shocked at how female friends take so many taxis to avoid a ten minute walk at ten at night. I'd be more worried about the taxi driver than the walk.

Freddiefox · 05/10/2019 22:07

I feel very uncomfortable, and avoid walking in the dark alone if I can.

Sparklingbrook · 05/10/2019 22:07

I wouldn't walk anywhere alone at night, but TBH I have no need to.

ineedanotherholiday · 05/10/2019 22:09

Yes although as pp says there might be some places or shortcuts I'd avoid. I too would also be more worried about taking a taxi alone than walking. Although obviously I wouldn't be walking through country lanes etc on my own at night.

ChanklyBore · 05/10/2019 22:09

I love to walk, night or day.

When the clocks go back we’ll all be walking about in the dark most of the time.

Might sound strange but try wearing really good sturdy waterproof footwear. Easy to feel vulnerable if you are tottering along, sliding in leaves, or squinting at the ground trying to avoid puddles. Good solid boots. Strong legs. Head up.

MeggyMeg · 05/10/2019 22:10

I think it depends on so many factors;past experience, where you live , your upbringing etc.

I live in London (albeit a 'safe' area) and I'd say I'm more wary with age ,but that doesnt stop me going out at night with precautions such as walking on main roads in well lit areas.

InsertFunnyUsername · 05/10/2019 22:11

Yes and I dont live in a great area. It depends what you are used to. I do not feel comfortable walking through the woods for example, so people take the mick when they find out I walk through N.London no bother, but wont go for a forest walk.

Croquembou · 05/10/2019 22:11

I love to walk. Live in London. Walked round Brum last night!

Duvetdazed · 05/10/2019 22:11

When I lived in South London no, because it wasnt safe. Now I live in Devon yes, it's a much safer town. People are not regularly mugged, verbally abused, or worse.

Northernsoullover · 05/10/2019 22:12

No. I'm one of those who would take a taxi to avoid a ten minute walk at night. It shouldn't be this way of course. That said, I don't want my sons walking out alone at night. Women are at risk of sexual assault. Lone men are at risk of assault.
Its a moot point though because I don't actually go out at night.

WaitWhatOh · 05/10/2019 22:13

I’d much rather walk country lanes at night than city streets!! I’m not scared of the dark - just people in it! I hate feeling vulnerable or scary or unsafe when walking late at night but yes, I do.

MeggyMeg · 05/10/2019 22:13

I also take the view the vast majority or men are not about to attack me. I am aware of others behaviour, such as noticing that most men will make a point of walking over the road rather than right behind me. I therefore notice when someone doesnt do this. I've always walked around in the dark though.

Proudpeacock · 05/10/2019 22:14

As it happens I am in Brum too. I am happy to walk alone at night in the city centre or in areas that I know. If I was out inadvertently suburb I didn't know I would probably take a taxi.

Graphista · 05/10/2019 22:14

Depends where I am. Glasgow no problem London no chance (and I've lived in both, like London well enough but didn't feel as safe there) that's not the only places of course just examples.

MeggyMeg · 05/10/2019 22:14

I definitely wouldn't walk down a country lane at night Shock give me deepest SE London over a country lane every time. Grin

100PercentThatBitch · 05/10/2019 22:15

I used to and used to do it a lot including going home via a dark alley at 2am

Now I find it really intimidating

Nothing terrible happened in between so I don't know when or why it shifted in my brain to God why would I do THAT?!

toemvarrzaw · 05/10/2019 22:15

I live in what most would deem a low crime safe area but I wouldn't even walk my dogs around the block after 8pm. I don't know what it is but night time darkness freaks me out. I think it was probably down to watching crime watch as a child.

I also wouldn't get a taxi alone at night. I'd rather get the night bus as it stops right outside my house. Luckily my boyfriend picks me usually.

OhTheRoses · 05/10/2019 22:15

When I was young lived in zone 2 and felt v safe. V busy and nowhere off beaten track. Would still walk there

Years on live a tiny way out and more lonely roads. Still feel safe - if anyone wants me bag they can have it. Can't run fast now but they'd only want the bag now.

Climbingwindmill · 05/10/2019 22:15

I don’t walk along the canal or through alleyways etc at night alone but will walk pretty much anywhere else alone at any time.

ThatLibraryMiss · 05/10/2019 22:16

I empty the dog last thing every night - at least a mile, unless it's pouring, any time between 10 and 1.30. As long as there's a pavement and it's fairly well-lit and with traffic I'll walk anywhere at any time. I want to be able to see what's around me so I won't walk somewhere with poor lighting. Shoulders back, head high, walk fast but not hurried and look confident.

LBOCS2 · 05/10/2019 22:17

Yes, all the time. Grew up in SE London, comfortable walking around there, day and night. I've very rarely felt uncomfortable walking around, anywhere.

IfNot · 05/10/2019 22:18

Yes I love walking at night, but I used to get scared when I was young for good reason. The chances of being attacked are WAY higher as a young woman. Something to do with the fact that young girls seem more vulnerable. I'm much more comfortable on a city street than in thd woods though.
I actually like being older now and feeling invincible, enjoying the quiet dark streets.

InsertFunnyUsername · 05/10/2019 22:18

I definitely wouldn't walk down a country lane at night

Agreed. A loud "Fuck off" will grab someones attention. Country lanes it's just you and the murderer and maybe sheep Grin

Velveteenfruitbowl · 05/10/2019 22:18

I am afraid. I still do it. But I avoid it when I can and always do my best to walk routes when I know there will be people to see/hear me.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 05/10/2019 22:20

I was attacked by a guy when I was younger, my friend and I both were. Before that I’d walk anywhere but now I don’t walk alone at night or dark mornings at all.
