Do you feel comfortable walking alone at night time?

I have never felt 100% safe walking alone at night even when i was younger.
I have just driven to the shop and noticed a few females walking alone along the main road although it isnt lit up very well.. This is how it should be of course and I wish i had their confidence. After years of driving and rarely going out after dark as I am looking after my Son I feel I would be really scared to do that now.

Am I being daft or realistic?

(I live in Brum)

Yes I always have done. Just got back from a night time walk on my own actually. I know there are risks but I think the risk of getting knocked down by a car in broad daylight is much higher.

I used to live in South London and would happily walk home in Brixton at midnight up the main road. Not through Clapham Common or down alleyways off Coldharbour Lane though...

I now live in a small town in Spain and feel safe anytime of the day or night, including across the field that's a shortcut home to my house from town. Have walked it several times at 2am no worries. It is lit though.

That's very true Sally. In fact driving a car is also much more dangerous.

I used to walk a lot at night because I felt safer when there was nobody else about. You also don't realise how noisy it is during the day until you've experienced the depth of silence you find at night.

But my assaults all happened behind closed doors rather than on the street, which probably alters my feelings.

In terms of walking alone, I feel more unsafe walking somewhere with lots of places for someone to hide then pounce - at any time of day, with any level of light - than I do walking along a street in the dark.

I love the night /dark walks. Always feel safe.

No I always feel nervous walking on my own at night even in my local streets and I live in quite a small town. Apart from the very real worry of attacker’s etc there’s a primal part of me that comes out and starts thinking there are BAD THINGS in the dark Blush

Interesting thread. I would NEVER walk alone at night. Or even through a secluded park during the day.

I live in rural south, and probably safe. But it’s how you feel. My best mate is the opposite, out dog walking in the pitch dark and I wish I could be like her. But I’m not.

I actually dream of living rurally and being able to have quiet night walks. I suppose reality is I wouldn't be able to see my feet! 😂

Yes, very comfortable. I often used to come home from nights out at 4/5am and had no issues taking public transport home and walking home from the bus stop. It's never pitch dark though, as I'm in the centre of London, and there are always other people around (it's an area with lots of bars and clubs). I used to work as a waitress and always walked home after a late shift (midnight/1am) as I refused to pay even for a subsidised taxi as it was only a 15 min walk and I felt perfectly safe.

Yeah, I'd walk down a country lane no problem, London no chance.

Mate frm Bromley was scared of the cows in't field when she came oop North Grin

SpaceCadet4000 · 06/10/2019 01:57

In London I always did- no matter how late there always seemed to be other people out anyway. I'm now in the US and I don't unless I'm in New York or another major city. Most people are in their cars and there seem to be more nefarious characters among the walkers, as much as I hate to say it.
